I disagree with the fat theory though. Would you believe that there is absolutely no evidence that fat makes you fat? Fat is a vital nutrient for the body. Everything you eat is stripped of it nutrients and the glucose is mixed with oxygen to fuel the cells. Apart from the vitamins and minerals, plus protean for repair it is the glycogen (oxygen plus glucose), that keeps us moving. As I said previously all excess carbs are converted to fat and stored around the organs ans waste.
@CheapCharlieChronicles7 жыл бұрын
Fat is a vital nutrient but your body doesn't need much of it and too much of it does far more harm than good, even the healthier fats. Read the China Study or some of the work by Dr. McDougall who recommends we get 80% of our calories from carbs, 10% from protein and 10% from fats. Many carbs based foods already have fat and protein in them. Fat is the most caloric dense food, so even if we think we are not eating a lot of fat we are getting a lot more of it than we realize, in most cases 25-40% of our diet intake. There have also been doctors over the years who have cured things like high blood pressure (back before there was medicine for it in the 50s) and the world renowned Cleveland Clinic curing patients of heart disease, by putting them on a high carb diet of mostly rice, fruit and sugar. For example Google Walter Kempner, he cured hundreds of patients who were on the verge of dying from high blood pressure with that diet.
@Cyberoverdose8887 жыл бұрын
Your thoughts on carbs may be good for your age and food intake, but this will not work for all especially one like myself that is a diabetic wherein carbs and sugar has to be in moderation. Protein in the form of legumes, meat, etc. is the norm. With your budget, I highly recommend trying to find cooked food, when you see it very much like most thais that cannot cook in their rooms. Try to be there when they are paying so you know what the cost is, without having the dual pricing. Good luck you are in a really tight budget!
@simonescelsa7 жыл бұрын
Why do people keep seemingly mindlessly repeating that excess carbohydrates will turn into fat? What do you think that happens to excess fat, does it not turn into body fat? In fact only 70% of the excess carbohydrates can be converted by the body into fat, whereas 99% of the excess fat can be converted into body fat. This is basic biochemistry

CHARLIE, here 3 useful tips: 1- Mix soap and water before starting to wash clothes; and let clothes soak a few minutes (10-30min... the longer, the better), before you start using the brush: it will be easier to wash and comes out cleaner. 2- Re: "Morning Glory" veggies: Any vegetable with hairy roots should be cleaned /removed before cooking it; oitherwise you will be eating the chemicals/fertilizers used to grow that vegetable. 3. All vegetables should be washed thoroughly in water mixed with a few drops of chlorine: you never know which animal/insect urinated on them, specially in warm climate countries. .

Hey CCC, this is good stuff in the niche of being a digital nomad. Maybe consider renaming your video title or writing something about being a digital nomad into the video's description box to reach out to that crowd. Those easy to monetize (KZbin ad revenue) hotel/hostel reviews would also really play favorably within this viewer segment.

I have freelanced and worked the internet most of my adult life at various things and now I am trying to do it with KZbin. My area of Ohio is impoverished and there isn't much work around there other than working at a gas station or McDonalds. Also I don't have a car or driver's license there. I applied for a couple of fishing jobs in Alaska because it is seasonal work (which means I can spend the rest of the time in SE Asia) and one can earn some serious coin but they turned me down. At some point I would like to marry and have kids, preferably somewhere in SE Asia.

It seems like now a day everyone has a youtube channel and expected to make a decent living with it. I watched many whiteys invaded se asia lately on youtube. At first I thought they were just working for cia and pretended to be working or freelancing to hide their true self. Uncle Sam can't be hiring so many cia in that part of the world. With that said I would agree that working here in the states and go spend it there is much better. That's what I'm doing.

KZbin may work for you now but not for the long haul unless you are in a tech company career with a pension and medical plan. What you will make each month does not pay into any future retirement income nor does it pay for any medical bills in case of a catastrophic illness. What will you do in the long run, KZbin will not pay the bills 10-15 years from now living the way you do. Go into a hospital with a motor accident, a fall or serious injury, who is going to pay for the medical bills? Think your plans long term, because short term may work but not for long.
@jonnaketo40827 жыл бұрын
From our time on, regular jobs are going to be much more uncertain than jobs that we create for ourselves. If one is able to be self-employed there is certain need that is being met. This in turn creates a property that we control ourselves. KZbin especially is a vehicle to create a big following. It might be that KZbin revenue crashes but there is still the audience and following... attention can be turned into revenue...

Right away - and it's only my view - a rice cooker (or an induction plate with a compatible pan) - is a lot more important than pestle and mortar. Think calories. One kg of rice is 3,500. Big loads of greens are 10-20 baht. So a rice cooker with a basket above it gives you 1,000 kcal and loads of veg for (say) 10-15 baht. Add 20 baht of cart curry and you've had half your calories in the evening for 30-35 baht. [Just watched some more - you have the cooker!!] If someone is coming from the West, or you see a deal, I'd get a pressure cooker. The one thing in Lotus which represents a ton of nutrition at no cost, which seems to be unexploited, is kidney beans and the like. They're dirt cheap if you look, and in a pressure cooker with a chicken carcass as stock (dirt cheap, also in Lotus) you get a ton of protein for next to no money. 14:00 - Loads of pull up, dips and similar machines in the parks, and not all of them rubbish. The dip stations are a little broad, the pull up bars are a little slippy, and the "lift your own weight" press and pull machines have to be used one-handed, but it's all free. The fruit - for a cheap charlie - is (mainly) bollocks. If you get a deal bananas are okay, but the rest of it is a lot of waste for little real eating. If you look around washing machines are 20 baht, and sometimes 10. Never in a million years is it worth the effort and aggravation to wash clothes.
@CheapCharlieChronicles7 жыл бұрын
Hi Craig, yes you can eat just rice and some greens for almost nothing and be fine. That is what I have and that is what I will be doing for awhile. Fruit is incredibly good for you and this is the cheapest place in the world for it. I bought 6 kilos of mangosteens for 100 baht or $3. You can get some amazing deals from these fruit trucks which bring the fruit directly from the farm. That price is half of the Thai wet market price which is half the price in Thai chain supermarkets. Fruit is very enjoyable, you can get board of rice very quickly so it adds some variety to your diet, a lot of nutrition and it is the only food type that doesn't require cooking, nor seasoning, it naturally tastes good on it's own (everything else needs to cook and/or seasoned). 6 Kilos of Mangosteens for example are some serious calories by itself too. Bananas are also high in calories and not expensive (I like the little Thai ones here better than the American bananas). I agree fruit is much more expensive on a calorie per calorie basis but greens for example have no calories almost (full of nutrients though) and are even more expensive still. So yeah my diet will most likely consist of about 70% rice in calorie form. I also like to eat potatoes, fruit, occasional street food and I have dinner at my friends place from time to time. Also about the clothes washing it is good if you are an athlete and sweat a lot. The lukewarm water in the washer machines doesn't get the job done, you need hot water to kill the bacteria. So what I do is steam the water in my steamer then pour it into the bucket and let the clothes sit in their for awhile with soap. I will show in my next video. You sound like you know your stuff or have lived a similar lifestyle before, thanks for the input and feel free to add any input
@craigross3417 жыл бұрын
Being tight-fisted has become like an illness with me! I was gutted to discover that rice (especially brown rice) is high in arsenic. In Udon you can get brown rice for 15-20 baht a kg, and I'm basically a dog: I can wolf down the same thing day after day with no real problems. Brown rice could have formed the cornerstone of my tightarse diet. Fruit isn't really as cheap as it should be in Thailand, and that's because the entire process is so inefficient. The £8 an hour you pay British workers is a very, very small addition in cost to each piece of fruit, and the incredible efficiency of European agriculture is far more important. My standard 1.8kg bag of apples in the UK is the equivalent of 83 baht. Bananas are 32 baht a kg in every single supermarket. In Udon last summer I was having such difficulty getting reasonably priced bananas I went to the market and bought the whole bit of the tree, and even that didn't work out so cheap. Labour-intensive and under-capitalised agriculture and expensive (per unit moved) transport all ends up in the final price. I was going to the gym every day last year, and I really, really stink. I've got a fairly high "VO2 max", so after 45 minutes I look as though I've jumped in a swimming pool, there's a pool of water around the machine, and I stink of ammonia. I think the trick is to hang the stinking laundry in the sunlight as you use it until you have a full load, and then wash it in a 20 baht machine with a good load of powder. The machines I used weren't used much, and the water say in a blue pipe in the sun, so it was coming into the machine at (say) 45C. It's a good long cycle - 50 odd minutes - and seemed to work. A squirt of household bleach into the mix once it's full would certainly kill everything.

Hi Charlie, I know what you are going through.. Often telling people around me that life in Thailand is not just fun because the girls are cheap.. The life there is really sabai sabai and most of all great and without stress, i think. I lived that life there for some months but a bit in between poor and rich. Not a one week millionaire. Not as cheap as you did, but I respect and admire every possible way and opinion. I also took baht buses, walked a freaking lot, .. I thought i ate cheap but i used up several meals on the street daily, each for about 40 - 60 baht and had all my laundry done. Yeah... you can eat cheaper than that easily cause you wouldn't be full on one meal from street carts. I think there are some things we could learn from each other.. WIll be back out there again soon. Hope we could maybe meet up. I will buy you a meal if we do.

I lived in chiang mai for 12 months on 800aud 630aud and while it was possible it sucked when it came to realise i couldn't go out to party a little or going for a decent western meal when i wanted to. If you can't afford travel insurance you can't afford to travel. If i only had 400 per month i'd consider cambodia over thailand, it's right next door and much cheaper. Yes but you only need 10% of fat in your diet which you easily get from eating regular foods. If you eat lots of meat, oils, dairy and eggs that will shoot up to 40% and you get things like high blood pressure, heart disease, etc.
@CheapCharlieChronicles7 жыл бұрын
Thanks. Perhaps you are right about the 15%. I'm not a believer in hard figures, the point is most people eat way more fat than they realize because fat is very calorically dense. So even if you cut it way down and think you are eating no fat you are probably still getting 15% in :) unless you are eating nothing but rice and fruit.

He is correct about the carbs. Sucrose, the Crystal solution you put in your tea/coffee is the bad stuff. The starch in the rice and potatoes, also fructose from fruit is packed with fiber which causes a slow release of carbs into the body. Sugar has no fiber at all and really should be avoided where possible. Please note also, that excessive sugar is converted to fat in the liver.

Thais are not really keen on hiring foreigners unless it is bottom rung (5k baht per month construction workers from Burma) or top rung (top of the line managers, etc. who are brought in by giant corporations investing in Thailand). There may be some opportunities in the middle but they are few and far between. There is a huge automotive industry in Thailand, in fact right here in Chonburi province (Pattaya's province), there are dozens of factories of just about every automotive company in the world either here in Chonburi or Rayong. So there may be some opportunity there for you. There is also a huge oil refining operation in Rayong province and lots of other factories, this stretch of Thailand is known as the Detroit of Thailand and it is called the Eastern Seaboard, it is the most industrialized part of Thailand. Outside of this or if you are not going to do something online (and there are thousands of ways to make an income online but few to none of them are easy) the two easiest routes are English teaching or opening a small business (perhaps informal) of your own. The former is available but the market is somewhat saturated because there are so many people who want to stay in Thailand so long. As for opening a business it is possible and I know many people who have done very well with it but it is fraught with difficulty and disaster just like any business.

I just subscribed CC because I constantly think about retiring there. I could not live there though (especially at your age) without having at least a little "fun" with the local talent occasionally. That would be absolute torture for me.... Have you considered buying a fishing pole? Last year while I was there, I went on a fishing trip and caught like 5 or 6 nice sized fish in 1 hour. Nothing is better than FREE food... Also, have you considered finding a job there to supplement your KZbin income? There are tons of western owned businesses there that are managed by Thai folks. I'm sure this causes lot of headaches for the owners for many reasons and they could benefit from a relatively young fluent English speaking person like you... Good luck CC. I will be watching with much interest.

Thanks Travis, glad you like the content. It is difficult to get jobs here, you'd have to get an under the table one and they are usually very low paying, like 10k baht per month.

I can't help but comment on your text image at 8:33 stating that only fat molecules make people fat. It's simply not true. Carbs, especially high glycemic index carbs can definitely make people fat and moreover contribute heavily to the increase in diabetes cases in the U.S. Nutrition science isn't agreed upon by all the experts, but every nutrition expert I've seen says that high glycemic index carbs are terrible for you, makes people gain weight, and endangers people's long term health.

cheap Charlie. I am 51 now. my SS if I was 65 now would be over 1,300 pr perhaps more a month but I do not trust the government. Right now its almost 1,000.I have some money and would need to put that into other investments. Is this country truly one of the most affordable place to live for poor retirees? Cana a American work in the country? What mutual funds and other investment have you invested into? Can a American buy land in the country?
@CheapCharlieChronicles7 жыл бұрын
You can't work unless you work online (which a lot of us do) or you have your own business. You can't buy land technically but some do it by going around the rules (like forming a dummy Thai company who are 51% shareholders and you 49% but you control 100% of voting rights). Affordable, yes it is truly but it is the sort of thing you have to check out first because it is very much a love/hate type place among different types of people.

Buying cheap clothes or towels are basically cheap but at the expense of poorer quality. Why? Since most of the products are directly imported from China. To get good ones you need to spend more. That red, hairy fruit is called "rambutan". It's well-known in most of South-east Asia including Malaysia, Indonesia and Brunei :)

I might. Like I said I'm not sure how I feel about it. I had my best day ever by the way in part due to this video, made $28 from adsense. This is part of the reason why I didn't open a patreon account because I felt confident I would get to a good level of ad revenue soon with the way my channel has been growing. But I may open a patreon account so I don't have all of my eggs in one basket, youtube adsense revenue is fairly unpredictable.

hey I watch your videos from time to time, and this one caught my attention because of the budget constraints, which I am used to dealing with..was kind of curious why you don't do chiang mai which is cheaper rent, better cheaper food, and nicer crowd than pattaya..by the way i get gout which is why im now veagan..its not a rich mans disease like they say but a problem with too much uric acid..beer is one of the main causes..much more than red meat..your diet is good, but would be better without the cheese.keep up the good vids.take care

I like Chiang Mai, spent a couple of months there with an ex-girlfriend but I like Pattaya too. I have friends in Pattaya, fruit is very cheap and abundant here (moreso than Chiang Mai), there are nice beaches and nice park on Pratamnak, the weather is nice I love Pattaya. Everyone goes to Chiang Mai and they don't even consider Pattaya because they think it is just a red light district but it is a lot more than that.

The Dietary Reference Intakes for Energy, Carbohydrate, Fiber, Fat, Fatty Acids, Cholesterol, Protein, and Amino Acids (Macronutrients)(2005) is a standard written resource for the dietetic profession. Even this publication says on page 275: "The lower limit of dietary carbohydrate compatible with life apparently is zero, provided that adequate amounts of protein and fat are consumed." In other words Protein and Fat are essential to sustain life, and carbohydrate is non essential.

There has never been a medical case of protein deficiency in the history of humankind.
@larrypowell67367 жыл бұрын
Where did you get your information for that statement? Do a simple GOOGLE search on Protein Deficiency. Protein deficiency leading to cataracts, heart problems, kyphosis or muscle atrophy - all somewhat common in the elderly. Eating too little protein can result in these symptoms as well: A sluggish metabolism Trouble losing weight Trouble building muscle mass Low energy levels and fatigue Poor concentration and trouble learning Moodiness and mood swings Muscle, bone and joint pain Blood sugar changes that can lead to diabetes Slow wound healing Low immunity
@CheapCharlieChronicles7 жыл бұрын
I got it from Durianrider. There is a case of caloric deficiency, not protein deficiency. Besides most foods have some protein, such as the Bak Choy and the rice I am eating now, actually they have more than enough even for a body builder (who would need more protein than the average person but still not much). Excess protein causes many problems in the body and often leads to organ damage to the liver and kidneys because the excretion of the protein strains them and can damage them.
@larrypowell67367 жыл бұрын
In other words you got your information from hear-say? Take a look at this Medical News Journal written by Medical Doctors, www.med-health.net/Protein-Deficiency-Diseases.html

@JeffPerry11115 жыл бұрын
It's been 2.5 years since this video so you may know this by now. (I'm strictly trying to be informative with this comment and not critical or negative in anyway). Fat does not make people fat; a caloric surplus makes people fat. Fat is an essential nutrient for the body and yes pizza and donuts are typically horrible processed fats that come with other harmful ingredients. But fat itself is not bad nor does it inherently make people fat. Carbs are also essential but so are micronutrients (vitamins and minerals). The idea that fats make people fat and you only need water carbs and sleep is absolutely part of the misinformation you are referencing.
