I swapped my 1x7 Mongoose Malus to an 8 speed. Stock was 14-28, not ideal for hills, esp considering FAT Bikes 40# weight ! Installed new Sunrace 8 speed 13-34 MegaGear instead. So that gives 1 more gear, 6 teeth + on large Hill climb Cog + 1 less on top speed cog. Now this heavy (entry level) FATTIE can climb ! I did also source a 32T Narrow wide from JG Bike in Red Anodized (to match bike colors) for much lower gearing vs 36T stock 'one piece' riveted crank / chainring unit. Cheers Mate - nice job showing all the steps ! David in Texas

As a fatty rider myself this is invaluable as I wanted to complete this conversion but didn’t feel confident to do it, great channel 👍

I've made a similar upgrade to my bike, from 3X8 to 1X8, still working on fixing chain jumps on the cassette, but worth it, now I have an 11-42T cassette, on a 32T chainring and just for 79 USD (300000 COP approx)

Loving this idea, I want to do it with my front hub, clear some space on the handle bar, shame you didn't show how to cut the grips off, that is going to be one of my many issues! Well explained good job.

Thanks for the kind comments. I switched out the standard slip on grips for some lock-ons (which I much prefer), so I simply ran a razor blade down the length of the grip and slipped it off that way. If you do want to reuse a slip on grip, then there are ways to remove without impacting them, such as sliding a cable tie underneath and squirting in a little soapy water!

Indeed. I have one in storage at the moment (as moving house!). Intend to change it over when I get the bike out of the container again!

Thanks, great vid!!! Do you think any single chain ring would work? I can only find ones that says they are compatible with 9, 10 or 11-speed drivetrains?
@IceReef
@IceReef 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Henry. Thanks for the comment. Yes - in theory, you should be able to use any single chainring with any speed cassette, although for security and longevity, the better move when converting to a 1 x setup would be to purchase a narrow-wide chainring. This way, you get much better chain retention (you won't drop the chain as often on bumpy terrain).

You didn't need a spacer on the bottom bracket after removing the e-type front derailleur? I can't seem to find a straight answer anywhere

Are you using a 7 speed chain or a higher one? I'm using a 1x7 system too with a narrow wide chainring and a 7 speed chain. But it causes chain suck. Some say, I should use a higher speed chain. Others say, narrow wide chainrings only work with 10 speed and up systems.
@IceReef
@IceReef 4 жыл бұрын
If you are running a 7 speed freewheel or cassette then you should really run a 7 speed chain. Narrow wide chainrings are a modern development so mostly seem to be aimed at 9 speed and upwards. However, chain suck usually only occurs when you have a worn chainring and the chain isn't moving freely as you turn the cranks. I am running a 7 speed chain but the chainring is just a standard narrow tooth...the chainring guard is a newer Raceface item.

I hope you realize that every single thing you did has individual torque values that are supposed to be used. I hope your bike stays together and doesn’t wear out prematurely

what size allen key did you use to remove the cranks
@IceReef
@IceReef 3 жыл бұрын
They all differ, and bear in mind it is only the compression cap you are removing with an Allen key. I think it is a big one like 16mm from memory. The chainring bolts are usually 8mm.

What model is the original crankset
@IceReef
@IceReef 3 жыл бұрын
It was an unbranded crankset - probably made on behalf of the bike manufacturer to be branded as per the bike model
