Was reading amazon reviews about rj45 ports getting disabled and having to reset but nobody wrote the info about the doubling of the ports where plugging one disables the other, I bet this info would make great amazon review. I like that it is quiet and allows you to build a 10gbe backbone ostensibly very easily and quickly. Thank you for the best review I have found of this product.

This video raised my hope for finding a quiet 10GbE switch but after I read reviews on Amazon I gave up. Other brands and models in similar price range seem to have pretty much the same problems.

Yeah I can't speak on the troubles other people have had with their switch as reported on Amazon but I haven't had any issues with it over the year and and half I've owned mine.

Their new QSW-M408S has 8 1 gig RJ45 ports and 4x SFP+ ports for under $200 AND it's managed! QNAP blessing all of us in the home lab game. My M408S is out for delivery and is going to replace the beastly Cisco C4948E in my garage. It's fast but it's so loud and sucks a TON of power, trips breakers, etc.
@davidwilliss55553 жыл бұрын
I like that this has a few RJ-45 10 gig ports. My current switch is a 1-Gig switch that has 4 10-git SFP+ ports which are now full, so I'm looking for an upgrade. Microtik has some 10-Gig switches that are cheaper, but they're all SFP+. I have a homelab with several servers that are all SFP+, but my desktop is upstairs and I didn't want to run fiber, so I got a 10-Gig RJ-45 NIC and an RJ-45 SFP+ module. But those modules are EXPENSIVE!
@snoww20092 жыл бұрын
Yeah. Those RJ45/sfp+ module are pretty expensive. I bought two and it cost me near $100. They are within return window. I will get a 10gbe switch that has RJ45 ports and return the modules.

Hey Stanely. I currently have a Qnap TVS-872XT with thunderbolt 3 and 10GBE. I would like to move the NAS away from my desk to cut down on noise. It seems the two options are optical Thunderbolt 3 cables or this Qnap Switch + RJ45 cables. I currently get 620 write / 1100 read over my shorter Thunderbolt cable. I would hate to lose transfer speed to switch to 10gbe but $550 for a single-use optical cable doesn't seem like a great option either. What would be your recommendation?
@SuprUsrStan3 жыл бұрын
1100 mb/s is essentially 8.8 gigabits per second which is well within the capabilities of 10 GBE Ethernet. Even if you take a little bit in performance hit from Ethernet overhead loses, I think it’s still worth going 10GBE RJ45 as that’s the future while thunderbolt 3 usb4 is going to be a dead end spec. Also, cat6a is going to be cheaper and more flexible than an optical thunderbolt 3 cable. Just IMO.

You can buy SFP+ modules to Rj45 for first 4 ports but they will have shorter cable length (up to 30 or 50 meters even on cat6a cable i guess?).

I don't see why not. The first four isn't doubled up with any of the RJ45 ports.

Hey... Just want to thank you for making this video. Very helpful. I just purchased the 12port switch for my small business. I appreciate the information you gave us. I've been searching and haven't found anyone showing how they connect everything together. Cable modem to wireless router, then do I run an rj45 cable to the qnap switch? My 2 computers have 10gbe and I have a qnap router with 2 10gbe ports. Do I just plug all of those ports into the qnap switch? As my devices all use rj45, should I make sure to have cat 6 cable? What are you using? Sorry so many questions. Any advice would be well received. Thanks!

So it’s really fast because you said it has a mix of 1G and 10 G ports and a silent fan. No actual speed test. Or saturation of all the ports on the switch to see it’s real performance. I have read complaints of the 1 G ports not communicating. I’m not sold on Qnap. Maybe for their servers. But not as a switch to connect to my servers

Um I disagree - most people dont need 8 RJ45 10GBe ports - and for the price you can easily count out the normal every day average home user - My experience is the ASUS XG-U2008 is a far better solution and more realistic for the average home user where the QNAP is over priced

That switch is a SFP+ switch that only has 4 ports. This on the other hand gives you 12 SFP+ and more importantly, 8 RJ45 10GBE ports. It’s an entirely different class of switch. Even after almost a year since this video came out, this switch and price point is still very compelling.

Well shit. I keep searching to see if anyone has come up with a $100 switch for this task, and it still doesn't exist. The technology is like 20+ years old, so you would expect it to be cheap by now. I had a 1gbps router back in 2005, so 10gbps in 2019 shouldn't be this hard to find.

Here you go: MikroTik 5-Port Desktop Switch, 1 Gigabit Ethernet Port, 4 SFP+ 10Gbps Ports (CRS305-1G-4S+IN). It's under $USD100 and is a suitable place to start. I use it to create a backbone for my 4 NAS units. They continuously mirror and snapshot 3 to 1. The three primaries are QNAP 472 units with 8Tb drive x 4 in each unit. and the backup is a QNAP872 unit with 16TB drives in it. The one Gigabit Port connection goes to my main managed switch. I don't move enough data between my computers and the switch as a single user to make it worth getting a USB 10Gb connection so the 1Gb connection is more than adequate from streaming and putting data on the NAS units.
