I think they have already done that
@cassius9697 жыл бұрын
Thats different for everyone. for playability more expensive guitars have lower frets than say a pacifica. thats it. The neck is a matter of personal preference so they cant really pin that on a cheap/expensive guitar although I am sure they have data on what kind of neck works best for most people and put that neck on the more expensive guitars and the type of neck that does not work so well for the average user on the cheap ones. Then you have the pickups. Doing one that sounds like on jimmy hendrix guitar (well a pre cbs strat) is no expense at all, but the cheap ones on the squier are going to sound distinctively different, the ones on the fender pretty close, while the ones that are a carbon copy of the ones used in the 60s are reserved for the most expensive ones. Its all marketing, figuring out what people want then giving them at a low pricepoint something that is not what they want but good enough to make them spend 300 bucks while reserving what people DO want for the very expensive guitars. Of course it is not just about the sound but the original look and feel when talking about vintage or a certain look and feel people shoot for in something contemporary.

Considering Rory Gallagher’s guitar happened to look like that through playing and touring and Fender did a kind of crap job with this signature, it’s kind of a shame. 5 way selector instead of a 3 way would of fixed some of that. For a Rory fan, it’s iconic and I can see the appeal in owning one. Not for that price though, if you’re not a fan then there’s no point.

In 1974 I was in a rock band (during High School) and I bought a Les Paul Custom, black/gold hardware used for around $400. I got it on payments and paid on it as our band were doing shows. Took me a year to pay it off. I think it was a 1972 LP.....with mostly just the belt buckle scratches on the back. I had it for about 7 years before I sold it. And I've learned you should never sell a guitar as you'll just want it back someday.

The Affinity Strats from Squier have better necks. Even so though you can always buy a $200.00 official Fender replacement neck which fits the Squiers and another $50.00 for official Fender machine heads and still come in under the cost of an entry level Fender Strat. I paid $200.00 for an Affinity model to learn on and have nickel and dimed upgrades with little bits of tax refund and the occasional spare cash and put maybe another $300.00 into it over like 18 months and have a completely custom instrument for about $500.00 all told. I always assumed I would replace the pickups but the stock ones actually sound really good and a bit junkie the way Strat pickups should. I just bought a second one because I want to rout it out for a custom and completely non-standard pickup configuration.

I'm a big fan of the Squier guitars. I own three Squier Strats. All partscasters and project guitars by now. The first two, a '98 and '97 China Affinity coast $80 and $65 respectively. I bought them used about five years ago. They were good instruments right away. Just needed strings and a set-up. Over time I have upgraded tuners and pickups/electronics. None of them is as good as an American Strat. But I have spent less than half the price of one American Strat on the three of them. And I have learned a lot about guitars in the process. They all sound and play differently. And they are each outfitted differently for pickups. One has three hot rails, one has two humbuckers, and one has an Alnico 4 P-90, a hot Alnico 5 single coil and 20k/Alnico 8 humbucker bridge pup, with an on/off switch for the humbucker. My favorite mod. They all sound and play great. But the intonation and tremolo/tuning stability will never equal an expensive guitar. Alas... The new Vintage Vibe Squiers are highly rated. A great value. I don't own one, but am open to it.

I'm a bassist and similar challenges have been done with Squire precision and jazz basses versus Fender's top of the line basses. Squires are a steal for the money! I've been playing since 1984 and I have owned several Fender basses. Right now, my go-to bass is a Squire vintage modified jazz bass, excellent sound, and playability. I use it on gigs all the time. I also have a 1983 Fender Jazz bass I've owned since 1984 it was my go-to for years.

I bought a Squier Modified 70s Jazz Bass Fall 2014 and it's my absolute favorite one I've ever owned. I tested it against a similar American Fender w/a $1,000+ price tag and the Squier made the American Fender almost seem like a toy.

*neural_physics* A decent sounding guitar and a decent guitar for taking to multiple gigs is a completely different thing. Sure it sounds good in a controlled setting, but will it stay in tune, retain its intonation, and reliably work every time you need it to while on the road? Its not a bad starter guitar, in fact its a really good starter guitar, but it just won't survive the stress put on it by playing live for very long.

Thanks for your comparison video :-) With my laptop, headphones and 70-year-old musician-ears, I couldn't hear the difference in your two strats as you played. I bought a beautiful white HSS "hard tail" Squier Bullet and couldn't be more pleased. The frets on mine do NOT catch my fingers; they seem fine. The (satin finish) neck must be one of the slimmest necks among the Squier Strat models. I like the higher output hum-bucker bridge pickup as it helps to stand out in the band for solos and lead parts. I also like that the Squier Bullet is light weight! The hard tail (no whammy bar) means that it's less likely to go out of tune. :-) A couple of MINOR points...I did end up going to the next less-slim gauge strings (ie. #10 on top) looking for a slightly less "plink" sound on the really high notes. I also will be putting on some fret marker stickers for brighter fret markings, as I find the dots not quite bright enough for me on a poorly lit stage. BTW, I loved your jam as well! :D

This video is one of the best videos I saw about guitars. Very funny with a lot of sense. I am 62 and have a lot of time so I decided to buy the cheapest I could buy. I bought a bullet strat. Then I started to investigate what I actually bought and was pleasant surprised. This video tops my decicion. I thought what could I get for 138 CHF and wasn’t expecting much. I was tended to by a more expensive one and I am so happy I did not. But as a beginner? But I spent 600 CHF on a Headrush later, because I found out much about amps. If you have no ideas one looses much money but these two buys were some of my better ones. I am so happy now, that could not be topped by the most expensive guitar. Merry Christmas!

OkkoMannetje you would be surprise actually, I have an American special strat (one of the cheapest Americans) and tried a lot of expensive Mexicans and although some are great there's just something weird with the feel of the American over the Mexican that is very noticeably different (or that might just be me!!)
@mikes0627 жыл бұрын
Bruno Ramos it's probably going to be something vintage styled from MIM and modern from MIA, so I'd think it'd be different but more to do with preferences for feel and pickup output.
@cenovita7 жыл бұрын
I don't now if they sound that different, but the feel must be, because MIM are done using the Metric System mostly, so the string spacing is narrower, like about 1 mm, USA spacing is 11,3 mm (2 7/32") vs 10,5 mm (2 1/16"). Is a pretty tiny difference, but I noticed it feels like the strings are not that close to the fret ends, sort of say. But Maybe is because I'm used to the squiers and MIM fenders, and rarely I play a USA. BTW, Writing this confirmed my opinion that Metric system makes more sense, lol.

I know this video is old but the biggest difference I found in stepping up to higher-end instruments is the reliability and construction. I've had a JP Music Man guitar for 3 years and only sent it for a setup twice, and one time was only because I mistakenly thought I had a problem with the preamp circuit. Of course the construction also lends itself to comfort and playability, but you can also find cheaper guitars that play great.

I played G&L for years and they're great, but the bathtub route gives it a sort of semihollow vibe that isn't for me. While I do vastly prefer G&L pickups and wiring, I prefer the actual body of a Fender... and since I tend to putz with pickups anyway, I'm currently content with an American Std HSS. If I ever return to G&L it will need to be a custom order without bathtub route, and very specific neck too.

@73challenger50317 жыл бұрын
Yes, I'm for real and you basically stated what I did, with some embellishment. My point is, yes the one with the "name" sounds better(infinitely? I don't think so) but why pay for a "name" when you can start with an inexpensive Strat and mod it to the sound you want for far less money? Also, the "name" Strat is all beat up. Maybe some people like that but, I'd rather have it new and beat it up myself.
@73challenger50317 жыл бұрын
They didn't sound THAT much different and I don't understand why you need to be insulting with your replies. Yes, a more expensive Strat is going to sound better off-the-rack but, if you buy the "name' Strat, you're paying mostly for the "name." Why not buy a Standard Strat that is shiny-new for a couple of thousand dollars less and, when you can afford it, you MOD IT! THE NAME DOESN'T MAKE IT SOUND ANY BETTER, DIPSHIT!
@TheEmpyrean157 жыл бұрын
Jack Dowen, why? If you put the same hardware and same electronics, why wouldn't it sound the same? It's not like the Gallagher Strat is a guitar that came from the outer space. It's not different from anything other that Fender makes, aside from cosmetics and vintage style hardware.

Since then it's travelled over 3000 mile to Canada, where it stayed in it's box, came back to England 3 years later where it sat in the loft. It was taken down early this year when I was clearing the loft, amazingly the thing was still in tune! So started learning and playing again, at 64 I decided I needed a hobby as I approach retirement. BTW the shop looks amazing, I feel a trip coming on in the new year and perhaps a new guitar :)
