Some of the 7k Gibsons won't be played, but others will - if you can afford an expensive guitar like that, you aren't really that concerned about the money. And equally a lot of the £169 guitars will be played once or twice and then live under the bed or in the attic because the owners lose interest. That's life - does it really matter?
@OddoRocket8 жыл бұрын
Jonathan Oakey it really depends on the player. Some might not mind taking the 7k guitar out of the case and playing it, as apposed to keeping it mint in the case. Also depending on the interest level of the person playing the affordable guitar it may get played allot, or it may just stay in storage

If you are a canny shopper you can get a cheap guitar which is better than the main brands. I've got a 89 squire Korean strat from the samick factory. Mint condition but with iron gear pick ups and all new electrics. It's fantastic. No wonder fender pulled production from samick. Taking too high a market share...
@rockerseven7 ай бұрын
Honestly, I'd say it comes down to machines getting better. The cheaper guitars are usually just machine made whereas the expensive ones are handmade, but because machines can get so much more precise compared to what they used to, really what you're paying for on the expensive ones is the labor. That said, the cheaper ones do usually have lower quality hardware and electronics...BUT, you could always swap those out for higher end ones if you ever wanted. At the end of the day, the main thing to concern yourself with would be the base guitar. Ie. The wood, the neck, and the fretboard. As long as those are all decent, you can easily swap everything else out. That said...I absolutely love my American made guitars for what they are, but I also have a Chinese made guitar that I love as well, and it already came with some of the upgrades I would've wanted to put in.

The time spent manufacturing the $7000 guitar is much higher than on the $1000 guitar. And they had to basically build a whole new assembly line for a limited run. I'm glad that the results turned out so well after the risk of basically re-creating an old design. I wonder why they don't make more of them? Perhaps the labor costs are the biggest part of that price tag.

The guitars out of the custom shop are definitely handmade and consistent. Gibson has never claimed to cater to a crowd with a low price point however they have always made efforts to make some affordable guitars with solid quality. Gibson claim to fame however has always been as an exclusive brand for serious players. Fender has done the complete opposite and has tried to make a good balance between quality and price. Its just two different business styles and they both work. No need to dislike the company for it.

100% truth! Unless you're either a rock star, or someone else who's wealthy, you shouldn't be paying over $1,000 for a guitar. I've been playing for 40+ years - 30 of those in bands - and I've seen so many people show up with expensive gear who got laughed at by other musicians. The crowd didn't give a crap WHAT name was on the headstock or the amp.

Maria Benavides - Or stupid with their money. The wood only varies in price on an electric guitar. It doesn't affect tone. Pickups can only be made one way using a couple types of magnets and a specific gauge of wire. People pay for a name. Any Epiphone can have the hardware (bridge, pots, tuning keys) upgraded to as good as, if not better than, that overpriced 'Custom Shop' Gibson.

A 70 dollar pick? Who "swears" by it? I buy Dunlop 1mm or so by the bag, I think it's a 10 count and that costs around 4 bucks. I'm constantly losing or misplacing picks, 70 dollar picks would get expensive real quick. I like the Dunlop because they have bumps and texture so they don't slip out of your fingers quite so easily but even still I lose them all the time.

Gibson uses many re-branded Chinese parts in even their hyper-expensive Les Pauls. Plus, most of those parts are made in the same factory with many of the same materials used in Epiphone and whatever other guitar brands are made there. People give WAY too much credit to the name on a headstock without bothering to do research. These two are trying to sell you the most expensive guitar. That's why Chapman pushes the 'Tonewood' myth for electric guitars. It's a marketing ploy and a complete fraud.

It would be a much better comparison to use one of Gibson's current top level range Les Pauls rather than a historic model that is trying to replica an old guitar rather than trying to be the best guitar they can make. That Gibson is only 7000 pounds because it's trying to be a '59, not because it's the best quality Les Paul in their current range.

G400 Pro is probably the 4th cheapest Epiphone SG. There's the SG Special (big pile of turd), G300, G400, G400 Pro. @dainiusvysniauskas20498 жыл бұрын
Harley Benton is a in-house brand of affordable music instruments, owned by Thomann. Talking about electric guitars only, they cover popular designs like Les Paul, SG, Stratocaster, Telecaster, 335, Gretch and so on. Their prices vary from around 80 euro from student series to the ~250 euro for their top guitars (SC550, XT-22, CST-24T). It's a bit hard for me to describe them with words, but there are couple of guys reviewing them, Cory Mura, Nick in the States and EytschPi42 being the biggest ones. It'd be better if you checked their reviews or visited Thomann.de to find bit more info. And an example : www.thomann.de/gb/harley_benton_cst_24t_paradise_flame.htm

If i'm correct, the Captain(Anderton's) will receive an Epiphone batch this/next week, which will contain some Epiphone Prophecies with EMG 81/85. Please review that one i beg you. There aren't many good reviews of it online, but most importantly than that, the fingerboard is a mystery. Their video says ebony, i see ebony, but their website says rosewood. Anderton's website says ebony, other websites say rosewood. There are videos with rosewood, others with ebony, but now rosewood regulations are in place so yeah...a bit confusing. Another thing is the neck. There is no neck-cut for lower fret access like LTDs, but the neck meets the body at the 18th fret rather than the 16th, so the neck-cut might not be needed. It's an amazing offer as well, especially with the hard case and the Epiphone straplocks. Please review that one and i will order it from Anderton's straight away if it meets my requirements. I'm waiting for that Epiphone batch like a schoolgirl, please don't let me down lads.

Unfortunately, not having ebony fingerboard would be a deal-breaker to me. I want a pretty Les Paul with EMGs, easy lower-fret access, satin neck, and ebony fingerboard. If the Prophecy has ebony fingerboard and lower-frets are accessible, then it's the perfect guitar for me. The Bjorn Gelotte LP is just a LP custom, and doesn't have a maple top. The Matt Heafy LP has everything i want, plus cool extra features, but it has a gloss neck and looks plain. LTD EC-401 and EC-1000 are not full-fat LPs, they don't have maple tops, they cost more than Epiphone LPs, and on top of that, they don't come with hard cases in the UK.

Cheap guitars tend to lack overtones and sustain when compared to more expensive builds. Bottom-of-the-line parts usually are harder to get perfectly tuned and go out of tune more quickly; fit and finish is often lacking due to less time spent on each guitar. But once you get to the mid-level pricing, these differences rapidly diminish.
@telepheedian7 жыл бұрын
Right, this shootout is pretty obvious, but if you were to compare it to an Epi Standard Pro with the probuckers, you'd have a much harder time. The gap between $200 and $500 is much greater than the gap between $500 and $1000+

Mathew There are 2 types of people buying those. The musicians, that see them as musical investments, as a way to fulfill their passion of guitar playing, tone, music. They are the ones who will play that thing everyday and have their investment pay them off by providing pleasure and inspiration. And the idiots, the cheap, arrogant, spoiled child headed ones, that buy these for the sense of achievement, just for the sake of owning something that is way beyond their average capabilities, something that will mentally raise their status. The ones that must have what they can't. These are the ones that keep it under the bed fearful of damage, wear or a decrease in it's resell value. These guys see it as an investment in itself, a financial investment. An investment that will pay off ONLY when they sell it. They are not musicians, they're just spoiled. They may aswell get a bar of gold, it will never lose it's value. THEY are the ones who don't deserve it. You deserve what will pay you off, and that's limited just by your ability to obtain it. It's your passion, your sweat, your desire. If you can get it AND enjoy it then you clearly deserve it.

It is amazing how cheaper guitars in the last 2 or more decades are built well enough for a pro musician to use...the technology has been so refined. The 70's offered some of the crappiest guitars I've ever played and it seemed that keeping them in tune was always a battle but now I can find a 300 to 400 dollar guitar from most ANY well known brand and be very satisfied.....after replacing the pickups that is!!!

I think it's mostly the fact that the guitars coming out of Asia have drastically improved in quality and are much cheaper to manufacture. I've had some good ones made in Korea or Indonesia, and 30 years ago that was unimaginable.

Computerization and mechanization. In the late 70s, Tokia and other Japanese manufacturers adapted CNC computerized cutting, which had been developed to mass produce wooden rifle stocks, to guitar production... at first using it to reproduce classic Gibson and Fender guitars (at a time when both of those companies had lost the design subtleties that made their classic models favorites, think of late 70s Gibson and Fender headstocks) then, after lawsuits stopped that practice, creating their own designs that were more affordable and consistent because of that method. As a kid in 1982, I wandered from music shop to music with $800 of saved up money in my pocket, and felt insulted by the Gibsons and Fenders I could afford, but I ended up with a terrific Yamaha electric - the scale of a Les Paul with a set neck, but three single coil pickups like a Strat, and capable of sounding close enough to either to make me very happy - with a good chunk of change to buy more records. Anyway, these days if you aren't buying Custom Shop from Gibson and Fender or one of the smaller boutique brands you're getting a CNC cut and routed guitar. So, it comes down to if you believe a computer and a machine in America is superior to one in Mexico or Korea or China or Vietnam or Indonesia? As you pay a little more you get better wood and other components, but from what luthiers tell me there is actually negligible difference in tone woods, actually... characteristics of the wood can vary and affect tones, but there's similar woods that vary in price (Basswood does sound very, very close to Alder, but is much cheaper since it grows like a weed in Asia). Above the $600 point, maybe, you're getting diminishing returns... no one will be able to hear a difference if the guitars have similar pickups and wiring, etc. They can certain "feel" better, I guess, and you get the point of dictating your preferences for a price and having things custom built, but no one else can really hear that, unless it really makes you play that much better, and you're someone who people want to listen to, anyway.

Gibson copies require you spend a bit more like the $300-400 range like you said but this Les Paul at around $350 is very good with solid vintage Alnico pups. They won't sound like the originals but they will make it sound like a good Les Paul. All these budget pickups seem hot and overwound. With Fender (Squier) you can find something in the $100 range that will blow your socks off. Indonesian makes especially. Good woodworkers with a solid acoustic guitar history. Spend maybe another $30-100 on some better electronics/pups/hardware and you have a great guitar that now feels like something you put some work into.

UltraRoadMap: budget guitars have come a long way since the 70's and 80's. there was a time when Squier and Epiphone didn't make good cheap guitars, but since 2000 they have gotten much better. i think it was because Fender and Gibson didn't invest alot of time and money for there smaller companies to work with at the time. around 1990 is when Gibson and Fender started to invest more into those companies, then in 1995 they started making them in Indonesia and ever since then they have gotten better every year. Ibanez got there start from Fender when Fender went to Japan to form a small company in 1967 as we know it today as Ibanez, and now there the 3rd largest guitar company in the world. but at the time from 1967-1973 there guitars looked just like a Fender, but in 1974 that's when they started to design them a little different. that's why i like Fender more than Gibson. Ibanez and PRS/Paul Reed Smith are my two favorite guitar companies, because if it wasn't for Fender Ibanez and Yamaha wouldn't exist. don't get me wrong i don't hate Gibson, but sometimes i wish Epiphone looked a little different than Gibson. when you look at an Ibanez guitar you can see the Fender influence, but at the same time it has it's own unique design. you can see the les paul influence when you look at a PRS guitar, but at the same time it's a little different.

I have an old squire strat that I picked up years ago that I'll never get rid of. It has that special resonance and tone that makes it one of the best sounding guitars I've ever played and I've played a lot of very expensive guitars.
@theraccooninyourgarage26007 жыл бұрын
Both cheap and expensive guitars usually sound the same, it's just the amplification that makes it sound different. I just bought a brand new Ibanez Gio 7 string for $200 and it sounds fantastic! I've done some tonal researching on the web and imo, the best way to bring out the guitar's true tone is w/ one of those digital amp/effect emulators like Axe Fx or Bias Fx
@AndreLink917 жыл бұрын
I can answer that as a Squire and Fender owner. Th neck feels much different one from the other. I played the Squire for 4 years and when I grabbed the Fender, the sensation was totally different. The wood is of first quality and not as cheap as the Squire one. The sound is slightly different, and even a not guitar player would recognize wich on is a Fender and wich one isn't. To be honest, the Squire isn't bad, the sound is good, the bridge is really well done and the magnets are great. Of course a 1.000 dollar guitar has better ones. but still, Squire is great for it price.
@GrassFed677 жыл бұрын
Jonathan Downey There's definitely a tonal difference when playing clean, but if you're adding a bunch of gain and distortion, the only thing a more expensive guitar may bring to the table is that it will be a bit easier to play

When you were talking about the true 59's and how the aged wood feels different it immediately made me think of fly fishing. I fish vintage fiberglass because of my grandfather's rod. So for me this is a chasing nostalgia thing more than a true equity experience. So for those that really live and breath nitro, I can easily see inflation for the cost of the experience of holding the neck of a guitar that was "there".

Depends what you consider "fine." If you want to learn to play on something that sounds like a guitar, then playing properly will make a bigger difference than the character of your instrument and dropping thousands would be insane.
