That taught me to slow down, enjoy my family and be free to do what makes me happy. I was 77 when I started, I'm 80 now and in an apt. Bob so great that you found a Forester that works for you! As a Subaru Finance Manager for nearly 20 years I was glad to see you opted for Subaru Gold Plus coverage. It will definitely be there for you when you need it! I thought you put a lot of miles on your vehicles, so remember it is X years or X miles whichever comes first! Pro Tip, as you reach either threshold get an oil change and ask them to go over it - Subaru pays the dealer to fix anything they find! This is why I bought a RAV4 hybrid. I fabricated a thin solar panel on the top of a rooftop cargo carrier, and ran the power cord through rain guards on the rear window into two battery banks. A goal zero 33amp battery linked to another 33 amp battery. Runs all my power, even though the car is one big battery bank as well. I can sleep in air conditioned comfort in the outback of Australia, in mosquito infested hot country, while sleeping. I use a manufactured paper machete cover for my lights, as the newer models cannot turn lights off, and makes my car stealth in suburbs when sleeping while having air-conditioning running at night while sleeping. Uses about 2 dollars in petrol while having car in standby mode on air-conditioning. I prep my food using a freeze dryer, and can set out for long journeys up and down the eastern seaboard of Australia. Plus I have a disability permit and get free parking anywhere overnight, as National laws on parking for disability parking overrides local council parking rules.

I could live in an RV if I were single but no way will I not have a bathroom and live in a car and not at least be able to stand up. Running water and bathroom facilities are the most important thing to me. It's about cleanliness and if the weather is really bad what do you do? Freeze to death or get drenched in rain or possibly hit by debris during a storm? As a 61 yr old female in good healthy condition, I would not like to go without a shower or restroom. And I also eat every meal at home, I am not into eating out so cooking is important to me too and I don't want to cook outside in a storm or freezing weather. Anyone in their 60's needs to think about a full time place to live in case they get too sick to travel. This living in a car is stupid in my opinion.

I'm with you on the diesel, Bob. I had a 6.4 Ford diesel pick-up that I bought to go FT with, pulling a trailer. While I was shopping for a decent trailer with room enough for 2 to live in FT (and not kill each other) the engine died on the diesel just shy of 150k miles and they wanted $15k to fix it. This was the money I was going to use to buy the trailer. I got to thinking, what I would do if this happened after I retired and didn't have that kind of money to fix it? So, I sold it for scrap and used that same $15k they wanted to fix the motor to buy a 1999 gas powered Class A MH. I was lucky as it only has 28k miles on it and it was in great shape for that old of a coach. My wife and I have been living it full time for the last 6 years, mostly off grid and it hasn't seen the inside of a repair shop even once, as we do all the maintenance, minor repairs and upgrades ourselves. We now use the little Chevy Cobalt SS we once pulled our Aliner with as our toad. It still gets close to 30mpg even though the odometer reads 450k miles. We put around 12,000 miles a year on our economical toad and only about 4,500 miles a year on our coach, which brings our gas expense down to under $3,500/yr. Since we boondock almost all the time, thanks to our big solar system, we're able to stretch our meager SS check, so we have money for other things like our pets, eating good food and sightseeing. All the best in your Subie! Chip

I am so very happy for you. Been following you since the beginning. Love all the changes. Some people want to Travel light, far, and fast. Others want to have a full apartment on wheels, with all the luxuries. And there are so many variations of the two. The preference of each individual needs to be respected. Even when it changes. At the end of the day it’s your life, try it all, and live without regret. Yes! LIVE LIFE! I have been planning to get the Runaway Rouser 6x8, to pull with my 2020 Toyota sienna.

Build an 'SOS'( Solar off-grid Shed) like I did in Arizona. Park your ambulance in the SOS and use it as you 'home base'. No bills, just power it from the Solar on your roof in the shed and drive your new Subaru where ever you want to go.
@randyrowett7998Ай бұрын
That's a good idea and suggestion.

I rented a Subaru Outback during the Oregon ice storm of 2022 and it was a revelation. All the other guys I was contracted with chose Dodge Chargers and Kia and Hyundai vehicles, and they were all stranded at the hotel. I laughed, and reminded everybody, now who’s the soccer mom? Tigard, Oregon has a few extreme hills that most vehicles couldn’t climb, all except the mighty Subaru…

Always funny passing Jeeps slipping on snowy roads in my Outback 💪
@TatiachaАй бұрын
having had a Hyundai awd and a forester, the Hyundai was better in snow, ice and gravel than the forester in the CO mountains. Now it's been a while and I have not tested the new ones but Subaru had a bad bit of time with engine oil leaking problems they did not address for years on many different models until they got threatened with a class action.

Yay on ur subaru! 💓 its got to be a conspiracy w all the sensors too 😅!! Awesome to be able to have a great warranty!! 👍 😊

@@justindeclemente1130 I love your story. As I mentioned above when I was considering buying a Subaru I decided to hang out in the dealership maintenance waiting room and ask questions because if that will people will be pissed off at their cars if they feel like they're lemons. One of the many compliments that I was told by the Subaru owners was how they "love to climb". Two other people that day told me that their whole families own nothing but subarus.

Congratulations Bob - two magical words = Freedom and Happiness. Sounds like you are pursuing both with everything you've got - I say go for it! (I am almost 10 years your senior, take care of your health and wear that Subaru absolutely out!). 👍👍

Hi Bob you know I've been following you since I read your book years ago. Today I was watching car/ van living videos & I think you are responsible for giving so many people freedom from the slavery to their mortgage or land lord or abusive relationship. I cannot believe how many car/ van living videos there are on you tube now. Blessings on your new vehicle. We've been in vans & cars for more than 15 years now. ❤

Hey Bob, I’m presently driving a ‘23 Rav 4 Hybrid AWD and getting 43.1 mpg no matter how I drive it. That’s pretty much in town. DoorDash miles. Perfect for dashing. Never gave it much thought about making it a home. Till now. Maybe I’ve got the perfect rig.
