All of these comments about how disappointed folks are in Bob 😂. People grow up. He's a grown man with the right to make choices that work FOR HIM. If downsizing to the SUV fulfills HIS needs and wants, I'm sure the good Lord will be okay with it and keep blessing him. He's had all types of experiences living in diverse circumstances, and at this point, he knows what he wants for now. Heck, it could change again, which would be awesome cause more content. Some of you think that just because Bob is older, he should be acting a certain way (like a stick in the mud). He never has, and he never will. Bob, to the end of your days, keep doing what YOU want to do. I think it's wonderful to see you not afraid to try other modes of living and being frank about something when it doesn't work for you any longer. Hope your furball is doing well. Look forward to seeing more.

Hi Bob! I wanted to let you know how much you have changed my life. I found Cheap RV Living (the blog) almost 10 years ago when I was in the depths of despair and depression, and it started me on a path to hope and freedom. Since then, I've consumed hundreds of your videos, and I've outfitted my beloved Prius and gone on many camping adventures. In a few short years, my children will be grown; in the meantime, I'm working on becoming more financially independent. When the time is right, I'll hit the road--hopefully for good! For now, I'm loving my shorter excursions, enjoying a life of minimalism, simplicity, and nature-based spirituality. I'm currently reading "Wisdom From the Road," and so much of it resonates with me! Thank you, thank you, thank you for having the courage to be your true self and live your dreams. Your courage and love of helping others has made a huge impact on so many lives--including mine. I hope somehow I'll meet you and thank you in person some day, but if that doesn't happen, I wanted to make sure I get this message to you. Keep up the great work! (And for what it's worth, I LOVE the Subaru!!)

My 2004 Honda CRV just got a new lease on life. I'm 72 but I think I could do that if I borrow some tools from my son. For two decades I've been watching people live van life and hoping to do the same. A sick husband kept me from it for a long time and lately it's been a house full of junk that has to be dealt with before I can get my old step van converted. But now I can see jaunting off for a few days here and there in my Honda. I have the same tiny fridge and some solar panels. Thanks for the years of inspiration, Bob.

I've always wondered why vanlifers insist on using 3/4" plywood and 2x4's for building stuff in a small space. 1/2" plywood and 2x2's would be PLENTY strong for those short spans, and would save weight while taking up less space, too. Just an observation. Great idea for a build. I love that L shaped counter!
@nmartin5551Ай бұрын
Brad- i have always thought it reflected that application of brick and mortar concept to these small spaces by folks who dont understand the physics of it. Then others who see it try to “make it stronger” because of the vibration of the road. Although, in this build in particular, I think the 3/4 platform is to create a surface that can take a fastener.
@williamsnyder1324Ай бұрын
Go with 5/8 A/C plywood for extra strength and stiffness if you really want but, 3/4" plywood is definitely overkill and extra weight for van applications.

@bradchoi9679 These aren't stationary houses. Driving on dirt roads for those who do, forestry roads, off the beaten path, requires strong materials. I was flabbergasted when my 1rst build broke down even though I had used strong material. For my second vehicle I took that shifting factor into consideration and have had no problem (5/8 for some components, & 3/4 for other areas where I know there will be torque or tension)

Hi Bob! I recently lived in a converted Astro van for almost 2 years. It was the nicest and coziest Astro builds I had ever seen, and sadly, there’s no video documentation of it. 😞 But the reason for my comment is regarding the sliding and rattling of your microwave. Rubber sticky mats are your friend! You know those rolls of rubbery shelf and drawer liners or the rubbery sticky mats for under rugs? That! I used it for EVERYTHING in my van - and I still use it for everything now! It’s got a million and one uses. You just cut it to size, and viola! No sliding or rattling! You’re welcome. 😊

Did up a $800 99' Explorer drove home ten years ago and eveloved into this really comfortably. Being able to sit up and put feet in footwell behind drivers seat is golden. Drop in a removable deck passenger seat for dog bed. Pulled out my center console and opened up a lot space and ease to slip into drivers seat. Double tiered wire rack (light weight) shelves in the window space, supported from above, top shelf goes across with ample leg room below. 15 gallons of water on roof in 4" ABS pipe. Still tons of room for supplies, necessary tools. SUV has been the very best from Class A, travel trailer, truck camper experiences. You figure out how to make it work and is quite enjoyable. A rear hitch platform welded to inverted drop hitch (raised for ground clearence) is a necessity for utility hauling, a place to put a beach chair and be up off the dirt under the shelter of the hatchback, as well as a general purpose platform to work off of.

I like your interior design, Bob. When I travel, I use my 2007 Ford Edge, and this design will work for me too. In my case, I don't remove the back seats. After investigating the process to remove them I decided busting my kneecaps would be less painful, than removing those seats. The side benefit however is that my rear passenger seat in my Edge, reclines! With the front passenger seat flipped forward and that rear seat reclined, I can relax with my feet up, working on my laptop, watching videos or whatever.

I did a similar build in a couple of different cars, a couple of things I did differently that might help people with their builds, plus some random extra thoughts.... Rather than normal lumber for the verticals, I used two strips of half inch thick ply glued and screwed to each other and to the base in a T or L shape in places like corners or along edges, this takes less volume and can make little storage cubbies and is immensely strong... Polyurethane wood glue is amazingly strong and fills jagged cuts nicely, but takes some practice to use without making a mess... Coach screws into lumber can be used in the undoing direction to expand in place to jam supports against the metalwork to stop your base sliding, put a few spots of self adhesive velcro underneath where flat things touch and it will stick nicely in place... Once you've fitted your microwave like bob, take two of the brackets off again, and put self adhesive velcro between them and the microwave and screw it back down... Get a single small throw cushion and keep it in the microwave to stop the plate rattling, it comes in handy for comfort when sitting inside too, just throw the cover in with your washing occasionally (careful the crappy dye can stain your clothes)... Put a loop of rope or webbing through the spare wheel so you can stand straighter when pulling it out of the well... That cross bar shown at the end will significantly stiffen the shelf if glued and screwed which means you can have wider spans between legs, be creative... Build the entire contraption just with screws first to make sure you can take it in and out of the vehicle then strip and reassemble the final design with polyurethane wood glue... You can make custom tubs to perfectly fit in places with just plywood polyurethane glue and screws which will be strong enough to sit or stand on... Use exterior rated plywood, never chipboard or interior ply, it can stand more moisture without damage... You can get away with very light and thin plywood if it's thoughtfully boxed and braced with narrow doubling strips in key places... There's always room for a fire extinguisher... For CAD modelling complex shapes, you can cut it close, then apply lots of bits of painters tape across the gap to the bodywork, then draw on the tape with a marker, carefully peel the whole thing off and cut the tape along the line...I think that's it for now this isnt easy on a phone screen, thanks Bob, love your book so far.

Its always a balance between being super comfortable in a massive motorhome with all the bells and whistles BUT can hardly go anywhere because its as big as a mountain and Bobs solutions here. For ME the answer is somewhere in the middle as I would like to be a tiny bit more comfortable then this. I am looking forward to seeing how Bob likes this in 6 month time.

Hey Bob! Just a couple of suggestions for what it's worth.. the microwave, you could put some of that rubber shelf liner to keep it from rattling & slippimg, but are you concerned about it tipping the other way? I know you have the L brackets, but nothing in front or back that I saw. I was also wondering if you might drill some holes into your bed platform for ventilation and weight reduction. It is interesting to see all the different rigs you've had. I'm surprised you're going so small. It will be tight with Cody I think. But it's your choice! I really enjoy your videos still after I think 8 years? I/we (husband and I) were hoping to get to RTR this year to plan for our future travels, but I had a major health issue this year. So we'll see! But we need to get on the road soon! Take care! Safe travels ~ Lisa Z

I’m not disappointed in the slightest- I kept coming back to wanting just to be in a car for traveling. Everything else started to look like work.

Bob, wrap the glass tray, ect, inside micro with towels. No rattle. Orrrr, that roll of rubbery drawer liner stuff. Walmart!! Use that stuff to quiet/ secure stuff. Anti- rattling !

Inspiring me again, Bob. I just bought new sticks and bricks and am looking at vehicle options for next part-time adventures. I love the lack of consumerism and DIY that goes into your builds.

I think a jet boil instead of the microwave. It’s just a lot of space for a microwave. Nice job ❤ the L is super creative

I don't know Bob, and can't begin to understand the how's and whys of what he does, but I do know that he's been a huge part of the Nomad Community for well over a decade; helping and financially contributing to the building of rigs for other less fortunate nomads. With that in mind, I wonder the he didn't enlist the help of the many dozens of people he knows who have the knowledge, experience, and tools necessary to turn out a first class build. Maybe I'm wrong, but I think they would have gladly done it for him for nothing more than the cost of the materials.

What a downsize !!! I perfectly understand the "why" and I am in total agreement with his philosophy, but it's SO SMALL ! I sure hope that Bob will be able to enjoy a "more free" life for years to come, he is an inspiration. All the luck to you sir 🤙

YYYEESSSS!! I have a 2003 Forester with 100k miles, and bought a Transit van with a build/kitchen/oven/blah blah for travel…..and I’ve used the Transit 3 times, because I hate driving it. 🤦♀️. So, going to sell the Transit and will do a little build for the Forester. If you’re in the North Bay Area please say hi, so that I can bribe you into helping! 😉

for the loose microwave, drill a hole in the wood shelf at both of the long ways ends and run a NRS 6’ camstrap around it and through the holes. very easy and cheap fix.

All I know is that I had not come across Bob’s videos I would have never camped in my Toyota Sienna van. I know physically I cannot live in my van long term but when we road trip and camp I enjoy it. I have some mobility issues that being said it could save you from being houseless. I appreciate you Bob. I also own a 2017 Subaru Forester. We love it. We road trip with it but we don’t camp in it.

Hi Bob, maybe slide a short piece of garden hose or the cut off fingers of a glove over the L brackets that hold your microwave to pad them so they are snug and don't rattle. Always enjoy your vids. Take care.

I lived in a car camper for many many months. I was advised to do it for a health reasons. Apparently by making life a little bit rough for yourself, help switch on protective genes. Sure enough my heart problem dramatically improved. And then went to a small van. I'm still living off grid at the moment, and loving every minute of it. It's amazing what you can do with a small space. And in my car camper I could fold out a double bed and had a pullout kitchen in the rear hatchback that I had made myself. The car camper was a lot of fun. Very compact, incredibly cheap on gas. And she really do get used to a small space, and having to maneuver in that small space can really keep you fit.
