I grew up camping with my family. My dad always made hobo coffee. I prefer pour over. I can't post a photo but I have a thermal carafe and a cone that fits just inside the rim. That way, I have several cups of coffee and it stays hot for awhile. The trick with pour over is to add just a bit of hot water, enough to just cover the grounds and let that sit for a minute. That way the grounds swell up and, when you pour the rest of the hot water, and extract more flavor.

Folgers makes single cup coffee in bags, like tea bags. You just heat the water, and pour it over the bag in the cup. The strength can be adjusted by the amount of water and how long you bobble it. They are my preferred camping coffee. ☕🍵

I like the Coleman drip coffee maker, designed for use on a propane stove. It looks like a regular drip coffee maker that you would plug into the wall, but instead of plugging it into the wall, you set it over a propane burner. Use the carafe to fill the reservoir, add your filter and coffee grounds, light the burner, and a few minutes later you have coffee. It even has a pause and serve feature. Of course, the burner can keep the carafe warm, too. Mine has given me about fifteen years of use and it still works great!

Frugal method I use for teas (most) and coffee (rarely) is to use the French press to make a super potent batch then put about 2 tablespoons of that (store in cooler) in cup and just add hot water whenever wanted ... good for more than a week of 2 cups a day with very little waste. Good video!

@@pepperpepperpepper I bought that concentrate from T Joes for an 8 day camping trip. It was an easy way to get my caffeine fix. Didn't desire my regular 1.5 cups. It's strong. I saved the two quart size bottles since they are very heavy ply plastic. Thought I could make 12 cups of strong coffee, fill the bottles and put it in the cooler for my next camp trip. Just heat in the AM. With high quality organic coffee the flavor is as good a few days later as when the beans are first ground and brewed.

when using the 'pour over' method, you should pour hot water over the grounds, just enough to dampen.....let set for 5 minutes, then pour remaining boiling water slowly....it is far more 'brewed' this way.

All good information! My fave is the "immersion method": just put a few tablespoons of ground coffee in a 2cup glass Pyrex measuring glass, add boiling water and let it steep 6 minutes, then pour all through a simple kitchen strainer (fine mesh). Tap the strainer, rinse with glass, and repeat! Thanks to all for the great videos!

Hey Bob, I find grinding my own beans provides the best flavor! We use a Bunn (like most restaurants use) which heats the water to the ideal temp when it finishes heating you pour in cold water which displaces the hot water and it sprays the water into the coffee and is filtered before it goes into the pot. It has an electric burner to keep it at the ideal temperature. The only downside is it uses about 900 watts to heat the water (once it's warm it stops heating) & the warmer uses about 200 watts. All the best!

Great topic! First coffee selection is essential. We buy organic, whole bean medium roast coffee usually from CostCo or Trader Joe’s. Second we heat the water in a stainless steel coffee pot with thermometer in the lid that has the optimal brewing temperature marked. Third, while the water is heating on the stove we hand-grind the coffee beans daily in a manual grinder. Fourth, we use the pour over method using a Chemex or similar hour glass shaped carafe. If you are making only a single cup at a time you could use a ceramic filer holder directly on your mug. Fifth, coffee filter selection is critical. We prefer unbleached or non-chlorine bleached conical paper filters but be careful because some brands will impart a paper towel taste ruining the coffee. Some pour-over carafes will come with a reusable stainless steel filter, but we use the paper filter too because it is easier to clean and uses less water when RVing. Sixth, when the water comes to temperature (not boiling) pour over the water and make your coffee. Last, enjoy your coffee and start your day off. The coffee never comes in contact with plastic or aluminum. It’s easier than it may look from these steps and comes together while the water heats. Maybe we should make our own video on making coffee on the road.

When I was on the road, I would make "cowboy" coffee. You add the grounds to the water, bring it to a boil then when you take it off the fire you toss in about 1/4 cup of cold water. It makes the grounds drop to the bottom of the pot. Believe me it works. If you don't swirl it you will not have grounds in you cup. Just watch when you get towards the last cup, as the grounds ate on the bottom.

Try Nescafe ClASSICO instant coffee. It's amazingly good and tastes totally different compared to Nescafe Classic (US version). It's sold in Walmarts at the International Food section. French press was best for me. I spent a few months living out of my F150 and would cook right off the tailgate. The Press was easy to clean up with a quick swish of water and a paper towel and I could easily adjust the strength of the coffee. BTW, I used a lot of Bob's advice on these videos and the planning and execution of months out on the road went nearly flawlessly. Frankly I was amazed how well it all went and know it would be easy to live on the road permanently if I ever had to.

@AsTheWheelsTurn 6 жыл бұрын
me too but I think most of the 12v water heating stuff barely works which is why its not popular. just takes too long and never quite gets hot enough, I am finding its better to just use an inverter with your 12v system so I can just use regular plug in stuff and be smart about what you plug in and how long/often you run it.with my van ,since the coach battery is charged by the alternator AND solar I start the van if im gonna run anything that pulls a lot of juice so its not as hard on the battery.I dont need to run stuff like that too often so its no big deal. same would work in a car with your 12v plug ,if you are running like a coffee pot just run the engine while the pot is brewing.
@AsTheWheelsTurn
@AsTheWheelsTurn 6 жыл бұрын
Mike Mead that is a good point to make , a lot of people don’t realize how small the wiring is to the cig lighter plug ins so should be aware . When I have used an inverted in a car I attach directly to the battery never the cigarette plug . In my van I ran heavier gauge wire for my 12v system to the inverter it’s almost as thick as the battery cables so it’s good to go for anything I’d want to use .

Living aboard a sailboat for years we learned to be incredibly frugal. Now starting new adventures in a Sprinter van we are taken those frugal ways into the van life. My wife and I are both morning coffee drinkers. We have found a stove top percolator using cheap paper filters makes the best coffee. We also have a good thermos to store the coffee in. This way we have our two to three cups of hot coffee thru out the morning using about five minutes of propane.

Enjoyed this video, in part because I'm sweet on Jim (LOL). I have reduced my coffe and tea consumption over this past year as I have learned that both have unfortunate health effects and it starts to mess with my budget too (for whatever reason, the more coffee I drink the more I want). I do partake of "the real stuff" now and then but have replaced the pleasant daily ritual with chicory products and herbal type teas. I get to keep the ritual and I'm content with less of it - so, budget and health friendly. I use the gravity cone method with a paper filter (tossed into the compost bin afterwards) over my favorite mug (Jamie clearly has one, hillarious) for a single cup since the dogs aren't interested. Don't have the van yet but I've been slowly shrinking my world and my habits to fit. CheapRV Living is a great guide for making the transition. Thank you Bob, Jamie, and the various delightful guests for making these videos.

@@thisspotrules3631 Coffee increases acidity of the body which effects the bodies ability to fight disease. Many habits in the western diet do the same (the digesting of copious amounts of meat, sugar, and alcohol, to be specific) which further compounds the problem and leads to an accumlative effect . Not to mention coffee and tea's effects on brain chemistry and the pineal gland. The fact that it's addictive and people have to detox to quit should give you a hint.-Your parents longevity is likely due to a multitude of other factors. Perhaps their overall diet was good and had a genetic profile that favored it, who knows?- I for one, feel better when I limit my coffee and black/green tea consumption. I keep them in the "treat" category and enjoy it with other foods, because nothing compliments chocolate quite like coffee.- That is how I interprit my experience and research anyway. Of course you are free to come up with another conclusion.- So, I choose beer for my poison, LOL. That one has proven harder to give up. And, if I keep it to a minimum, I don't have to- Cheers

Hi. I'm in transition still using an outside shack as my "testing ground." I tried a few different ways similiar to the pour-over or drip methods: 1. I heat up a teapot or glass pan full of water (sometimes using a heater/stove, sometimes in the microwave) and put it in a thermal mug that keeps water hot for at least 8-10 hours. I then pour this over some grounds in a reusable cup. 2. This is my preferred method: I do the same as above, but I put the coffee grounds right in with the hot water in the thermal mug, close it up tight, shake it good, and let it sit to get more from the grounds. Then, I pour it into a reusable coffee filter to catch the grounds, and I fill up a small cup. 3. I shake instant coffee in the thermal mug, then I pour it and drink it. 4. If I ever need water and don't feel like heating any, I'll probably fill my thermal mug with hot water from a convenience store and offer to pay for the water, which they probably won't make me do. I used to use bigger cups, but it would

We've been living fulltime and offgrid for 3 years now _(we're never plugged in)_ and we find our "cold brew" approach wins over all others -- *no contest.* We combine the usual amount of grounds and cold water in a plastic jug the night before -- shake it about 40 times and sit it on the counter overnight. The next morning, we simply slowly pour it through an old school strainer into our coffee pot and heat it up on the propane stove. It can be stored in a reefer up to two weeks and just heated up one cup at a time but we prefer to make ours fresh each night. Whatever we don't drink gets recycled into the next batch so there is no waste. For "cleanup" I simply add a small amount of water to the empty jug and shake that up, pour the contents into a large bowl we call our "science experiment". When the bowl gets full we empty the grounds outside -- doesn't hurt a thing. Cold brew has 90% less acid so even cheap coffees taste better as the flavor isn't masked by the acid. I never really cared for coffee that much and always used sugar and flavored creamers my whole life. Now at 65, I drink it black and enjoy it more than ever before. A coarser grind (like Starbuck's french press setting) makes for a clearer (less cloudy) brew but the finer grinds add a bit more flavor for the money. :)

I'm a tea drinker. It's easy to make, boil water, drop in a tea bag in the pot and pour the water in. :) I love Diet Pepsi, too, but have a SodaStream for that. No power needed, just the syrup and a C02 canister. And cold water. I have a countertop ice maker that only takes 300 W, so it works at home or on the road with my Bluetti. It runs almost non-stop in the summer, as I live in the desert. I do keep coffee at home for visitors, but use my Keurig because my two-cupper fits perfectly under it. On the road, if I really felt the need to wake up, I'd use instant coffee. Cheers, Jon in rural BC, Canada

i love the french press method when I'm just wanting a cup for myself. there's another way to make coffee that I didn't see them go over, I haven't tried it yet, but have been wanting to give it try and that's cold press. It's a lot like making tea in that you let the coffee set in cold water over night or more up to 24 hours. It's supposed to be less acidic that way and less bitter for those who never liked coffee because of the bitterness. I think it can be done like sun tea as well. Then you use a coffer filter of some sort either reusable or paper and pour it into another contained to strain the grounds out. It can be kept in the fridge and either drank cold or heat as much as you're wanting.

I recently purchased a French press. I think the water has too much time to cool while steeping. My favorite by far is the Mocha Maker if you like bold rich coffee. Additional hint is to pour heated water into the bottom, not cold. This prevents any possibility of burning the grounds while the water heats. Use low heat and let the coffee slowly seep into the upper chamber. The coffee is very smooth. Some like to ad heated milk to it. My grandmother from Italy always used the mocha pot, besides being my favorite method so far, it brings back fond memories of her tradition.

Cold brew. Mix 1 part coffee, finely ground. 3 parts water. Let it sit for 24 hours. Shaking often. After its say for 24 hours filter it off. SLOWLY bring the coffee to your desired drinking temp. Or just make iced coffee with it. Super strong. Zero bitterness.

You can also buy coffee bags, just steep for 3 to 5 minutes! I personally dislike coffee, but Hubster likes to buy the coffee bag. Thanks for the tip on little muslin or linen bags for tea! Awesome! Addendum: I'm finally donating Mom's espresso set, minus the cone, which I broke.

Awesomely cool & "need-to-know" info for us coffee drinkers! Thanks for puttin this on KZbin! One thing I myself have heard, semi-recently, is that our using PAPER coffee filters LOWERS the (never even knew coffee HAD this stuff in it, but...) CHOLESTEROL in the coffee. . . or, so they say!

I'm a complete coffee freak and have tried every method. The best, easiest cup comes from doing a pour-over, using a GSI Outdoors Ultralight Java Drip. No power needs. No waste or expense of filters to mess with, folds completely flat, takes 2 minutes, and easy to clean. Also makes the best tasting cup of coffee I have ever had and costs only $10 on Amazon.

I am a coffee nerd - my last home espresso set up was 10k to give some perspective. For travel: Orphan Espresso Lido E-T grinder + aero press is an unbeatable combo. The Lido is an amazing grinder with 3 bronze bushings! and worth twice the $200 cost. Only buy freshly roasted beans from a roaster, not a grocery store. No more than 1 week post roast (coffee beans lose their flavor approx 2-3 weeks after they are roasted). Get a cheap digital scale - I use approx 17-20 grams of coffee at a time - medium-fine grind. You need clean filtered water - coffee is 99% water. Mineral/spring water is the best, do not use distilled water - or it will taste flat. Watch some other vids on aero press demos... prefer the upside down/reverse method with a 20 second bloom and approx. 1.5 minute total steep time before slow press. You can make exceptional coffee by doing this... but the fresh beans, grinder and water are essential. Enjoy.

Oh dear! I'm watching this at 2am cause I can't sleep! [maybe I had too much coffee! LOL!] So I love my coffee, feel like I should have some now! I 'm an electrician, working long days out of a work vehicle, step van, now a sprinter. So now I like Kuerig for on the road, the k-cup is sealed, so coffee is not oxygenated yet, so tastes so good! I use or what they used to call it a B700. It uses 700 watts, of course winter time it takes longer, depleting batteries faster, but depending on your electrical system, I'm able to run my engine to augment powering house batteries in sprinter. Summer time, with solar no problem. [I'm in Connecticut we get all seasons] So winter I carry water, so when I'm in working in remote areas, I can re-heat meals, or make something, and have my coffee! Thanks for sharing your coffee ideas! Always fun to know more options! Also when traveling and not sure, starbucks has an instant that is pretty good. just add hot water. [That is for desparate measures!] Enjoy your coffee! God bless!

Perked coffee for me! I have 2 stove-top percolators, one enameled and one Pyrex, and it just fills the house with the great smell of coffee in the morning.100% Arabica is the only way to go. Once the coffee is done, I pour it in my coffee carafe and I have hot coffee for hours.

Strong coffee is a key to a sailboat at anchor on a stormy night. I use a stainless percolator just to boil the water (drop a can of soup in there if you want) and in 5-7 minutes it kicks down power to barely 100W. Pour hot water into a big thermos with grounds and let it sit for 5 - 10 minutes. Then pour into a french press and its awesome plus it soaks in the thermos and gets stronger. To grind I ise a 1968 osterizer blender...perfect.

Used the aero press for camping and recommend it. Plan on getting a second so we can make 2 large cups fast. Inexpensive, lightweight. Make it the way you like with fine or larger grain. Think you had it upside down at first, but your right, easy cleanup.

We like the French press method because we prefer stronger coffee. The lack of a heat plate keeps it from getting scorched and a good quality glass carafe (e.g. Bodum) keeps it really warm for a long time. We take any remaining coffee and pour it in a glass bottle and chill it, then add cream and/or ice if we want iced coffee. We do like the espresso pot of making mochas and lates. Also a great cheap espresso: Cafe Bustello.

Coffee making is as individual as tea making. I‘m a house dweller, and I like to freshly grind coffee beans every morning and make a filter coffee. If push comes to shove my next best favourite is the old fashioned percolated coffee. Instant coffee is so low on my list it’s almost falling off. Thanks for the interesting demonstration.

You can make coffee as strong as you want with a percolator - about 7-10 min. for normal to strong. Hard to find them, haven't used one in decades. I prefer drip coffee, and found a 6 cup 12 volt coffee maker to take on the road. I'll get my thermos out to keep it warm. I'll be checking out that "Moka Pot" also! Didn't know they were available to use on a burner.
