“it’s the thought that counts” is what you say when your kid brings you home an ugly necklace they won from the classroom treasure chest, or when an old relative you don’t really know gets you an ugly scarf for your graduation. that should NOT be the rule for making your significant other feel special on your TEN YEAR WEDDING ANNIVERSARY. how this couple lasted longer than even one year is beyond me.

@@robert1990robert It's a holdover from the Gen-X tendency to jokingly deprecate spouses in social settings. Later generations call it the "hate your spouse" generation, but later generations just don't understand self-deprecation due to an overall lack of resilience. TL;DR it was never more than an 80s sitcom setup. Most people who stay married remember anniversaries. If you're forgetting an anniversary it's not so much a catalyst for the end of a relationship than a symptom of one individual or the other losing interest.

I think it's also cause he wears them out, at some point the time spent talking to him instead of doing their job costs more than just giving him the deal... but yeah, he's not being smart about it at all, if he went to the dollar store and made the cake himself (it's not that hard to buy a ready mix and just following the instructions so even if he doesn't know anything about cooking and baking he could have made it) he would have spent little as well without bothering so many people and making everyone cringe, probably would have saved up on gas as well going to one single store. I bet he made the friend pay for gas since he drove him around, even though he was there "to help" (did he do anything other than cringe though?)

I was hosting one night at a restaurant I worked at and a guy got mad at me because I told him he still owed .36 cents out of his meal. I know it doesn’t seem like much, but the register was under my name, so guess who gets in trouble if it’s short. ME! If I let everyone walk away without paying the odd cents, especially if it’s a large group that pays separately, that will add up and could easily be $15 to $20 short by the end of the shift.

I worked in a jewellers for like 5 years and we had quite high profit margins on sales, so we could afford leeway on the price. I always refused to budge with people like this though. If you were a return customer I'd do my best to sort you out with a discount, but if you were a dude like this I wouldn't take a single penny off. I'd have people come in to buy a £20 watch and they would haggle with you over the price. Literally to the point were some people would even ask for 50p off... absolute madness. Then you wouldn't see them again. Then we had customers who'd spend 40k a year in the store and not once ask for a penny off. I absolutely detested people like Abdul. Another story- in my first month I had a guy come in and buy a watch for like £20. 4 years later same guy comes in complaining that his watch isn't working... I honestly couldn't believe he was serious. I nearly laughed in his face. The battery had died which is natural for cheap watches especially over that timeframe... guy REFUSED to pay for me to change the battery and sat and argued with me for nearly an hour about how it was our responsibility to cover the cost. Did he think batteries have an infinite lifespan? The cost for an in-store battery change was £10 and he sat and argued about not paying but was refusing to leave the store until his battery was changed. I had like 10 other customers waiting to be served so eventually I had to cave in and do it for him. I fixed it and just handed it to him with no charge and told him never to come back to the store again. Admittedly, it was slightly unprofessional on my part but I had so much more important work to do and I couldn't get rid of the guy. He threatened to complain about it on Facebook but nothing ever seemed to come of it... I looked up his account details on the computer and in 10 years the man had spent a grand total of £50. For comparison, one of the better customers had spent over a million in that same time period and never once asked for discount. Madness. Again, I didn't mind doing discount even if you weren't spending millions. Like, if a one off customer came in to spend a few hundred/thousand on a watch or jewellery for a special occasion I'd always work with them. Haggling over pennies is another level of insanity.

3:30 As someone that had worked at a gas station for a few years you CAN NOT just change the price of gas for someone. 1. you are competing / comparing the prices of the surrounding area. 2. HR has to approve the change. 3. if you change it for one, either you are losing your job, or everyone else that comes in wants it cheaper. Also contrary to popular belief, gas stations do not make much off gas sales, its the candy, dinks, alcohol, and Tabaco that bring the money. So when we say we do not need you to get gas because you wanna be cheap or a ass hat about the price, we mean it. Gas station employees do not get paid to enough to deal with this shit.

this guy is a fake cheapskate. A real cheapskate wouldn't need to haggle on fast food, they'd make their own burgers. They wouldn't use their cars unless absolutely necessary, they could bike and save on gas. They'd buy cake mix and frosting for that anniversary cake (like $5 max) and a pack of balloons at Walmart. Make the cheese tray yourself and fold some paper towels for napkins. smh

This guy is cheap by choice and selectively lazy. He doesn't want to save time, particularly, because haggling takes time. He seems more concerned with saving physical effort. However, I'm certain he's just psychologically addicted to haggling.

"I'm gonna give you a deal just so you'll leave me alone" is actually how most cheap people manage to get discounts, the seller isn't that desperate to make a sell, they just get worn down and in the end the time they waste with the haggler is worth more than the discount cause they could be doing more job in the meanwhile, and also just to make them leave they're like "fine, whatever" ughhhh I'm cringing so hard, if I was the friend there I would have run out of the first store already... bet he made him pay for gas since he drove him around? 😂

I used to work in a meat packing plant a long time ago. When we packed sliced ham, the lunch meat, they literally just change the top film on the machine which has the brand names. So... the stuff either cost around 7 bucks a pack or 3 depending on the brand. Same stuff.

I agree. Probably the camera crew being in their face put the pressure on them though. There's no way he gets people to settle like that all the time. Also, I wonder if they went to a bunch of other stores where the owners/employees weren't caving and only showed the clips where he was able to negotiate. It's tough to say, reality tv is so heavily edited and they pick and choose 10-20 minutes of footage for a small segment after filming these people for 2-3 days so who knows what else went on that didn't make the final cut.

My husband likes to claim he's cheap but when it comes to me he'd spend our entire savings on something I'd want without missing a beat. In the amount of time this dude haggles for that 30 cents he could be making more collecting bottles to recycle. This goes beyond cheap, he knows that it reflects badly on him and his wife but yet he still does it. I'm hoping that most of this was exaggerated for the show because as a business owner I'd likely 86 this dude from my store and ask him to not come back.
