**VIDEO SPOILERS BELOW** Card Shark Review, starting with what I liked: - The atmosphere was immersive enough to feel like I was in 18th century France, from the music to the art to the font to the dialogue. However, I’m very ignorant of historical accuracy, so it would have been impressive if they messed that up. - Cheating at cards itself was a ton of fun and had a nice difficulty curve. I honestly feel like I’ve learned enough to practice some of the tricks in real life, after I figure out sleight of hand. - The exact two times that you had to truly improvise, the mutiny in Baureguard’s Manor and the spoiling of the other cheat’s markings, were incredibly refreshing gameplay-wise. - The casual conversation was lively and fun. It gave purpose to our scamming and made me believe that the story would actually be interesting for a while. What I didn’t like: - Video games have this wonderful advantage over traditional media in that the player gets to directly interface with the game instead of being a casual observer. In story-focused games like this one, that means your decisions could actually impact the plot. In Card Shark, the only times you actually interface with the plot are: causing a mutiny at the end of chapter 1, donating to the ‘cause’, and deciding who gets the stacked hand at the king’s table. Every other choice (even the dialogue choices) without exception leads to exactly the same outcome. Having the illusion of choice is insulting, but having the illusion of choice as a literary theme is even worse. The only interesting decision of the three is the chapter 1 mutiny, because it has a consequence actually worth caring about. Finding out you’re a local hero for donating to the cause would be heartwarming in real life, but meaningless in a video game. It’s just pixels. This revelation would be a great time to leave an emotional impact on the player, but the only takeaway is a boring “charity is good”. Finally, the king’s game leaves the main character in exactly the same place no matter the choice. There isn’t an ending where you become royalty, and there isn’t even an ending where you get executed! The only difference is what happens to the other characters, which is hard to care about because of how one-note or unlikeable they are. - Having an entirely static story does not make a game bad, but the story must be truly exceptional to justify having it. The story we got instead was a phoned-in mess. The plot was intriguing when trying to solve the mystery of the 12 bottles of milk, but completely falls off a cliff at the gun duel. The writers wrote themselves into a corner again and again, then progressing the plot in a completely unconvincing manner. I would often get saved by people acting like morons at the most convenient time, and card/coin tricks drove the plot far more than what is believable. Any immersion the game had is now gone thanks to that terrible final third. - The writers tried to meld the story to fit the themes and lessons they wanted instead of letting the story develop organically and drawing themes from that. For example, I learned that there is no possible way to counter Erdnase’s fifth ace because the entire game is about the illusion of choice. The game wants us to believe that we’ve been duped, as comeuppance for messing with fate, but it falls apart completely when the duping is contrived. - It was such a waste that there were only two moments of true improvisation. Giving the player more opportunities to improvise would greatly improve immersion. - The controls were very obviously optimized for a gamepad, with mouse controls being an afterthought. Every single mouse drag tutorial has the exact same animation, which tells you nothing about when, where, and how to drag. - Some tricks intentionally only let you start doing them after the suspicion meter begins to move, which makes zero sense in-universe. Why on Earth can’t you master the tricks so well that it raises no suspicion whatsoever? - Games really need to stop giving you dialogue choices when the choice doesn’t mean anything. They also need to stop letting characters give you another chance when you’ve made a “wrong” dialogue choice. This game does both. - I could spend a long time picking apart character motivations and story themes, but it’s just not worth it when the writing is this weak. What a disappointment. Overall Rating: 3/10 (Very Bad) Don’t get me wrong, I had fun recording these videos. But most of the fun was self-generated rather than actually liking the game. It felt like a bad b-movie that you poke fun at with your friends.

Additional endings, achievable through shenanigans in the right moments through the story or, perhaps more importantly, through the actions in the last game, would have elevated the story somewhat I think. Setting up for the shocking twists would have been better, too- many people called the Comte a backstabber, but we had never been given an ACTUAL EXAMPLE of this until he left our fate in MacGregor's hands. If we had learned from Ireneo or the Magician of some other *specific* person the Comte betrayed, at some point in time before that moment, it could have seeded the doubt and made us think 'Well, will the Comte betray *me*, or do we have too strong a bond?' Likewise perhaps a third secret personality held by Erdnase, someone pushing both Eugene and the Comte towards his goals but never revealed to be the same person until the moment the King of Thieves was revealed, would have given that twist more weight. *We knew* that both his personas had fooled the Comte, but he didn't, and there was little reason to suspect that they weren't the only ones... That moment felt more like a shocking twist written for the Comte than for us, the players. If a third character had drawn our suspicion of being the same person, we could have pointed and gone 'LE GASP' when it turned out the most eagle-eyed of players were right all along. Erdnase being the key to the mystery of the 12 bottles was a good way to tie that in, but ultimately there was little set up for that as well. Maybe Ireneo could have slipped up and suggested to the audience- not even Eugene, but the audience, at least- that he knew more than he let on. I feel like there should be more weight to the choice of 'Yes' or 'No' when the king asks that all-important question, as well. I couldn't tell if there was any true consequences to that. Perhaps being honest with the king would have made him more willing to listen to us in the end, even if it was clear that someone cheated; and our word could save someone from the gallows? Food for thought.
@yetanotherkeyblader35722 жыл бұрын
There are actually a handful of endings depending on what you do in the final game with the 4 Aces. Depending on who gets them, the fate of Erdnase and the Comte changes a good amount and even you have some short term plot changes happen to you before the story spits you out at that restaurant in the slightly distant future. You also get endings if you don't cheat, if you get caught cheating or if you mess up the cheat (by not dealing all 4 Aces to the same person). The last one is by far the greatest since the Comte blows up in your face about how after all the training he did you still messed up the cheat (He's not even mad about who you deal it to, he's just pissed that you're a bad cheat)
@ITAndroMedian2 жыл бұрын
This ending of all is one of the more telling for me. Even though Comte is labeled a backstabber, when push comes to shove, he offers himself to let you go. He could've let Eugene die instead. I think Comte never was a traitor - just not perceptive enough of people willing to cheat *him*. It's not malice that pushed Comte to MacGregor - it's incompetence. Now, Erdnase speaks otherwise, but he's also the one willing to throw us or Comte on the gallows.

If the hierarchy of goals is: 1. Avoid executions. 2. Avoid imprisonments. 3. The friends we made along the way. Actually playing fair is second only to cheating for Erdnase.

@yuh71392 жыл бұрын
I will say story wise, the developers did a prenominal job with a lot of it fitting not only thematically but melding it along with the gameplay, immersing the player as if they were Eugene. From the illusion of player agency to tricking the player to think they finally had a say, only to get one last trick played by the mastermind who dealt all the cards to begin with. The "player" was truly just an actor playing out a script trapped until the curtains closed. Maybe it would've been more satisfying to have a final say that allows the player to have some control, but in this way, even doing everything perfectly, you end up with the same feeling as Eugene, making in my opinion, a truly immersive game. If you feel cheated that you bought this game expecting it to not play out like a play, that is completely fair. However, I'd argue it makes it even better, knowing how Eugene's life was cheated from the get-go.
@Torqegood2 жыл бұрын
The comte was never a bad person, he was just an idiot. He saved your life at the last minute to prove himself. Giving the game such a low score feels a bit harsh, but I also didn't like 999 because I went in thinking I, too, could effect the story, but I ended up going down a path where I got killed with an axe and it hurt, so I can understand going into the game with the wrong idea and giving the game a low score for it.

My thoughts on endings below It really sucks how charming this game was and how in-depth the characters were, because it all adds up to shit with the ending. The Comte is a masterful card cheat with a hatred for the monarchy, and truly cares for Eugene. The king is a lame duck, a monarch without the power to do what he wants and without the intelligence to do anything else. Erdnase is a lowly cheat and scoundrel, always rigging everything in his favor, even psychologically manipulating you in the final moments so you would choose him. Such characters have so much creativity and life for the story, but the endings turn out to be all the same. Erdnase rigged everything, Erdnase disappears into the shadows again, and the Comte is either executed for standing up to the king or lives out a peaceful life. You (Eugene) always get the same, exceptionally bland ending. there’s no revolution, there’s no royalty, nothing. and unless you play through the game all over again or look it up, you don’t even get half the story, which seems to be the theme of this game. Very dissatisfied, it could have been so much better.
@eden36692 жыл бұрын
worth noting, there *is* a revolution, but its only many years after the fact
@yuh71392 жыл бұрын
Personally, I'd argue that the endings there are the most fitting, since knowing the personalities of each character and tensions at their highest, there really wasn't any other deviation. For Erdnase to plan and stir his plan for 20 years just for someone else to decide, the proclaimed "King of Thieves", they would never. Although we crave agency in the games we so play, to have that taken away is a dangerous and powerful move by the creators, one that elicits very stark emotions from us. One where we realize, we're but mere spectators just like Eugene. I do agree that it would be interesting to see how things would unfold if each character really got a choice, but as a story, I think this way makes it all more compelling.

Damn, I was really enjoying this game, but the end really killed it for me. Eugene's whole stake in confronting the king is pretty much gone, and the game sets it up like the only winning move is not to play. I think the biggest missed opportunity is the lack of a "true ending". in a game all about cheating, the fact that the game doesn't aknowledge you compensating for the fifth ace is such a letdown, it always assumes you simply messed up. The game puts so much of an emphasis that you need to improvise at the end, and then railroads you into a choice you could absolutely prepare for. I don't mind the linear nature of the game, it reminds me a lot of Professor Layton, but that had to be one of the worst ways to end a game I've seen in a long time.

There are a couple of montages of what happens in each scenario: I can give a summary otherwise: Run out of sus: King makes good on his Guiana threat. Comte doesn't last long, Erdnase becomes a bandit overseas. Side with the King: Comte goes full indignation about how France is a rigged game and gets executed for it. Cheat for yourself: seen. Botch the trick: Comte calls you out for botching the trick. Both of you get Bastilled. Side with the Comte: Fifth ace still happens, but Comte only gets Bastilled. Play fair: Everyone goes their separate ways. Side with Erdnase: Everyone goes free, Comte and Erdnase stay in touch.

Mm i enjoyed the writing of this story in its essence but I do feel like there were a lot of twists for the sake of shock value that really added no merit to the story. Like, it'd have been fine enough for Eugene to actually be Sophie's child, and Erdnase's 5th ace is such a cheap plot twist with no build up. I like this game, it's a pity the writers struggled with the story, since I see it has a lot of potential. I like the characters of Eugene, the Comte, and Erdnase personally, but I wish a lot more of the depth of all their relationships was actually shown in-game.

Yeah this game had potential but it fell sort even all the ends are basically like mass effect 3 if you know what I mean.

It is quite disappointing to see that you have given this game a 3/10, but i understand where you come from here. It is almost like a choose your own adventure book but you dont skip any pages and alll the potions lead to the same ending. I loved this series and hope to see what is in store for your future a game playing.

Few comments I guess: 1) They never told you exactly what actual card game you're playing. Like how does peeking and signaling to the Comte how many hearts someone has actually change the outcome? How does giving the Comte 2 high cards actually matter? Are they playing Poker? or what? 2) Why did the Comte get executed of all people? Why not Erdnase? 3) Didn't seem like the amount of money you won or donate to the "cause" even really amounted to anything at all. Doesn't change the plot one bit.

I wonder if you give everyone a single ace? What would happen?

I just want to say my own little piece on the game (because I feel like it) First of all I didn’t watch this video. Nor have I watched the past few. I usually watch every single video Tyler puts out but when I genuinely dislike the gameplay I just can’t. This game didn’t really seem fun to play, but it was no fun to watch. I stopped about halfway through the series and only got that far because the videos themselves are always top tier I hope to see more papers please still honestly. Cool concept for this game but it got boring exceptionally fast. I even like playing cards but this game didn’t even make much sense (understandable since it’s a game) which also took away from the fun of watching. Felt like a memorization simulator.

It was interesting looking at various card tricks, but the rest of the game became increasingly moot. Still enjoyed the series though. Might even try sleight of hand
