Check and add trans fluid to 2013 Dodge Grand Caravan

Use only ATF+4 fluid does not have to be synthetic. Make sure van is at operating temp but can be done cold or in between. Easiest at operating temp. Only add 1/4-1/2 quart at a time depending on the level. Recheck level each time to avoid overfilling.

Might note that the lower mark for the engine oil is at 50mm so just use that as the high hot mark. 15mm high cold level is just above the twist in the dipstick. So remember.. cold should be at the high end of the twists and hot should be near the bottom (low engine oil) mark.

Hey, a bit of extra help here for you. The plastic trim sitting on the engine is removable. Just pull it up. It really gives much easier access to the fill tube.

The bottom line is that to make sure that how much fluid transmission you get out same to put in so there is no less or more .Another thing is that it is soo stupid that Dodge engineers didn't have that dipstick on the transmission but of course it is only one reason ...to go to the stealership....Good video. I got my oil changed & I'm pretty sure I had an oil leak. Dealership said I have a transmission leak & put it on paper for me. When I called they said I didn't have it checked but I can bring it in for $100 to check it. :/ Your video helped me out a bunch b/c I was looking for the cap, but couldn't find it to check & there was no dipstick anyway. My trans fluid looks a little low, but not by much. My oil, which they said was fine, is crazy low though. I think I proved my suspicions on what is leaking/needs fixing & that the people dealing with me there think I don't know anything. Thanks!

It is strange but using the engine oil dipstick is actually what Chrysler tells the dealer mechanics to use plus plugging the van into the computer to read the temp of the trans fluid and a graph of where it should be in relation to the temp. I picked this hack up from a mechanic who went through the Chrysler info and came up with this so one if his customers could check their own trans fluid.

As far as I was able to research the 2014 model should be the same; same engine and trans. I pulled this hack from another video. Anything like a a small file will scribe the marks on just measure it with a ruler or measuring device. I originally put the video up so my wife would know how to check the trans fluid while I was out of town.

I know that you need to run through the gears then back to park with the engin running. You want the engine on while checking the fluid.

If it’s old or pass 80k miles empty only half of fluid and put new heavy fluid cause after usure parts lose their sharpeners condition and if you put only new fluid u won’t have enough viscosity to protect sharps components and operations of the transmission good luck

Paul Sethi I always keep the engine running whenever I check the transmission fluid in my 2013 Chrysler Town and Country. The 2011 is also equipped with a 62TE transmission so the process would be exactly the same. I'm trying to find out if I need to push the parking break down and put it in neutral to get a correct reading. I will update you whenever I find out

That hack is not mine. It is from another video. The video was posted by a mechanic/shop owner who researched the Chrysler dip stick measurements for one of his customers so they could change their own trans fluid. For my dipstick I measured and marked it based on Chrysler’s specs. Does the same as buying a dipstick.

Keith Kiker you would think so. But the Dodge 62te transmission does not have a fluid dipstick. I read the service manual and it said for sure to put it in park

Chrysler is the only manufacturer that the transmission needs to be in neutral for the transmission pump to be pumping fluid. You need the engine running and transmission in neutral to get the correct reading on a chrysler/dodge/mopar. Cycling through the gears has no effect on the reading.

You are partially correct. There was a time that was correct on certain models. The dodge trucks for example didn't have flow through the cooler in park so you had to put it in neutral. That is just not the case anymore.

Automatic transmissions are very sensitive to dirt. Dropping the funnel on the ground it a Shure way to a stuck actuator due to dirt.

i just did this hack- BUT when i put the put the oil dipstick in the tranny tube (at a cold not running engine) the level is much higher than even the hot temp. level of 55 mm = 2.17" = 2 3/16" ??? and i just got back from the dealer who said the level is fine now!!! whats going on?? i have a 2012 Chrysler Town & country van.

never seen a transmission where level was not higher in pan when cold???? This is because fluid drains into pan when engine is not running.Fluid circulating through transmission while running. Overfill your transmission at your own risk!

Sounds like you need trans fluid and you might have leaking or weeping transmission cooler lines. I made this video initially for my wife to be able to check the fluid level while I was out of town because the transmission cooler lines were leaking slightly and I didn't have time yet to change the lines. The transmission on these vans are sealed so the only way to lose fluid is to unbolt the pan or through leaking lines. If not the transmission fluid level shouldn't change. Make sure if you use the engine oil dipstick you mark the dipstick on the back side. I don't remember what the measurement was for the hot and cold but I mention it in the video. I actually picked it up from a mechanic who went over the Chrysler info. This was just a hack so you could do it yourself with out needing the temp graph and computer to run temp diagnostics.

ERIC STEGELITZ. At 191 degrees the transmission fluid level should be between 36 mm and 44 mm when the transmission is fully warmed up but should be around 200 degrees after driving so I would make your marks on your oil dipstick at 40 mm and 55mm. The dipstick will bottom out but if you are not sure that you are getting all the way down there or afraid you're going too far this is the service manual recommendation "An approximate distance the dipstick should be inserted into the fill tube is 424mm (16.690”).

By "cold" he means the engine has just been started but it is not up to operating temperature. The measurement you are referring to is when the engine has not been started.
