As someone looking to get my first 110/defender and learning all I can about their quirks I have to say a huge thanks for all these vids. I am especially impressed by the fact that you respond to questions posted, so many 'experts' having got people's attention and views never respond to questions - even the really sensible ones like you get on here. Bravo squire.

that's a clear idea of how to check all the valves, springs and bits & pieces on the head. I did'nt manage to see how many holes on the original gasket, to know if it the head has been machined on a previous occasion. Lovely video Chris!

+Fionàn O'Kelly we haven't quite finished with the head yet and you have brought up a good point. . The cylinder head should not be skimmed according to Land Rover although it is carried out which is what we need to keep in mind when we check the face.

hi, i have my 300tdi head out after 350,000km with a blown head gasket, ordered new valve guides they are over spec meaning 0.30 side ways movement according to the manual should be 0.15mm, thinking if the specks have changed for these , any advise would be great thanks

hey please i have a question on bloc engine its marked the bore cylinder class , for example "abac" can i use piston classe "B 71.98" if the cylinder classe "a 72.00" is worn but still in the limit of classe b lets say 72.02" ? the mix is possible ? cause the workshop says that if classe "a" exced the limit , rebore the cylinder 0.1 and use oversize 0.1 piston Cylinder "A" 72,00-72.01 /// Piston "A" 71,965-71,97 Cylinder "B" 72.01-72.02 /// Piston "B" 71,97-71,98 Cylinder "C" 72.02-72.03 /// Piston "C" 71,98-71,99 over size cylinder "A" 72.10-72.11 /// over size piston "A" 72,065-72,07 over size cylinder "B" 72.11-72.12 /// over size piston "B" 72,07-72,08 over size cylinder "C" 72.12-72.13 /// over size piston "C" 72,08-72,09

How do you check your straight edge is straight? Is it repeated checks against multiple surfaces?

Chris at 2:35 the water galleries in the head gasket are very large almost 6mm in a new gasket they are only about 2.5 m is there a reason why they would be smaller it appears they would restrict the water flow causing the engine to heat up.

It is designed that way to restrict the water flow. I don't know why but that is the way it is.

what is the best way to clean down the oily parts if you don't have a parts wash?

Hi Chris as 200tdi heads are difficult to find can I fit a 300tdi head to a 200 block? Ta

Yes it does fit with a little bit of fettling.

When torquing down the new head following the bolt pattern at 40nm. After the last one could go back and retorque the middle bolts to 40nm. Is this suggested?

I was referring to the fact that after the first round of tightening to 40nm it is possible to retighten the middle head bolts to 40nm. If that is physical possible to do. Wouldn't each consecutive round have similar results, except because you are not going to "NM" but using 60 ,60 , then 20 degrees you couldn't tighten the middle head bolts equally to the ones on the ends.

Torquing is only initial approximate settling. Angle tightening is far more accurate. The sequence of bolt tightening is given to assure the pressure is applied without distorting the cylinder head. You need to follow the prescribed sequenced to ensure an even application of clamping force across the head to the cylinder block. Not sure, but I feel you are trying to rewrite the rulebook without understanding the consequences?

Thanks for replying, I'm just trying to learn a bit more as I am new to Land Rover, and diesel. I am now two warped heads into my 300tdi and am frustrated by the design of it, high water pump, and middle adjacent exhaust valves. The new head was running good then a 100k into a long trip the temp gauge sky rocketed.and that was it.

@@IndianaJBird ive bee very lucky, my 300 has now done 350,000km just reconditioning the head now it has blown head gasket
