Such an amazing work everyone of them do, its awesome to see animals get rehabilitated, I currently volunteer at a pet shelter at least once a week and im loving it, animals make me so happy, why not give that back to them! Each and everyone of the shelters needs all the helping hands they can get (: keep up the good work!

Your videos are so great! I would love to see one on how to work with fearful and shy dogs. We just rescued a former stray pup and she is so smart! Using your videos we have already taught her take it and leave it, but she is very anxious with new situations and people, including going on walks.

So great to see you advocating rescues. I love all your videos! Definitely checking out the Kramer foundation. Someday I would like to do something similar to that in a small scale. Rescue dogs give them jobs and place them where they're needed. It's brilliant!

Hey Ian I have been having trouble teaching my dog to stand, she has down and sit. But I just don't know how to get her to stand. A video on sit down and stand would be very helpful. Your videos are really simple and easy to understand and implement with my pup.

Two days ago I got my puppy for my birthday. It is a German Shepherd, Australian Shepherd mix. I love him so much! Your videos have helped me to start training him, although puppies don't understand much he is almost potty trained already! I don't know if you have made a video on "Come" but if you haven't please make one! Thank you!

There’s one thing that I don’t like...I dislike when people ask me if my dog was from a shelter or rescue. My husband and I decided to get one from a breeder, a boxer puppy. That was our choice and we’ve encountered a few people who have asked us if we rescued and when we say no they look at us kind of weird. It is everyone’s choice where they want to get a dog from.

Our bulldog Dexter was from a breeder. Our Jack Russel Darwin was from a pet store (still consider that a rescue, though). Good dogs are to be found all over and they all need loving homes, not JUST the rescue and shelter ones.

Simpawtico Dog Training Thank you. I agree. We researched a lot before considering a dog and we loved boxers because they seem to be good with families and active too. That was important because we love to go hiking and fishing etc and we didn’t want a lap dog, otherwise we would’ve searched one at a shelter...I don’t judge anyone who wants to adopt or buy...thanks for your input

People have generally negative ideas about breeders. The "puppy mills," and over breeding leading to more dogs in shelters. But yeah, a few bad apples shouldn't dictate peoples perception of things. Just be confident in yourself and your choices. People will always look for something to complain about.

For sure. I actually have the TrackX Plugin that'll help that but I have to update my OS for it now and I just didn't have to time to screw around with it; I wanted to upload. We'll have it for the Walk N Wag video, though. Also, I was just carrying around my DSLR on a Gorillapod in this one so for Walk N Wag I'm going to take the tripod too so some of those shots will naturally be less wiggly. 👍

HAHA! I love JRTs. I have one and he's a riot. Lots of energy, but very smart too. People get all worked up about the energy level, but don't buy into that. LOTS of dogs have just as high levels. But if you do some brain-work with the exercise they'll be a lot happier. Use all the enthusiasm and energy to build focus and rapport. That dog will be your best friend!

Thank you! he is only 9 weeks old, already bites my ankles in a playful way(when he does I leave the room for a while then come back) it's a work in progress, I will search into exercises. he sleeps 2/3 hours after exercise and almost all night which is nice.

I don't know if you give advice via comments but I need advice... My dogs weren't socialized a lot when they were young. They get really, REALLY stressed out when in cars, meeting new people, meeting new dogs, or when people come to work on our house (plumbers, painters, etc) We try to keep them under control by keeping them in a room and having 1 person stay with them the whole time. It's really frustrating because they bark the WHOLE time and it's really painful on the ears. They won't play, they won't listen, they just stand by the door and bark. What I've been doing is this: when I first bring them in the room, I give them treats periodically (every 1 minute or so) to keep them occupied and focused on me. Every time a scary noise happens, I praise them and give them a treat (hopefully letting them know that these scary noises are good). Over time as they calm down I make these periodic treats less often, and start giving fewer treats for the scary noises. I focus more on rewarding silent/calm behavior, rather than just distracting them. This seems to be the only way to keep them occupied, but there hasn't been any change in their stress response... at all. At the beginning, every time, they're terrified. Do you have any advice? Thanks, and sorry for the long complicated request

Hi Jennifer. A few things for you: One-I can recommend that you're trying too soon to fade food. We fade food very quickly when we do Operant Conditioning. You need to be doing Classical Conditioning instead, and when we work that way we use food without restraint until the job is done. Especially, during a single session? Way too fast to try and fade food. Two-the aim of the food isn't to distract them OR to reward good behavior; it's to do the work of the conditioning. It's desensitization. It's like this: trigger occurs (scary noise) = wonderful food appears. IN THIS ORDER. ALWAYS. Once you change their emotional response to the noises then the food will naturally become unnecessary. But be willing to work until then. Incidentally once you reach a neutral emotional response to a stimulus it tends to remove the behavior you didn't want anyways. Three-this also means that when a trigger occurs, you continue to feed them no matter what they're doing. This is a hard one for people to wrap their head around. People say, "Well if I feed them when they're barking aren't I reinforcing it?" If you wait for them to bark and then feed them, yes, you will reinforce barking. However if the scary noise happens and you feed them continuously until they calm down and the noise stops, THAT is Classical Conditioning. It doesn't matter if they're barking or not while you're working because the work is happening. Classical Conditioning is always happening whether you realize it (or want it) so you'd better make sure it's what you want it to be. Good luck and hope that helps. If you want more to chew on, check out Ian Dunbar's Differential Classical Conditioning.

Please make a video about crate training! My dog has such isolation distress that the neighbors have called the police, thinking I was torturing her. When, in reality, I was taking stray kittens to get vaccinated and left her alone in my bedroom for three hours. I would never hurt her or any animal, I'm a freaking vegan! I just don't want her to suffer, I need help! I have two cats but they don't care about her, their presence doesn't aliviate her isolation. I've considered getting a second dog to keep her company, but so far I can't manage one, I think it would be dumb to get a second one. Please help!!
