My dog's favorite activity is sitting outside with me and searching for treats I throw into the grass. We get to practice sitting calmly and watching neighbors and dogs go by and he gets physical and mental exercise, plus food!

I'm so happy that you're posting videos again! You're the one who taught me to freeze my dog's Kong🙂 I have a 1.5 year old terrier mix rescue, I've had him for 8 months and we've been using a maze bowl since day 2. He gets a Kong prob twice a week only when he's home alone, we do some treat search and nosework and we have a Nina Ottosson's puzzle game. I have also been using toilet rolls a couple of times, it feels good to hear that it's not the end of the world if some cardboard bits get swallowed😅he's a real scavenger though, which is a bit scary, so our trainer suggested to feed him 4 times/day instead of 2, two of which sprinkled outside on a grass patch. I have now purchased the barnacle and the squirrell and one of the books. This video made me realize that he's probably not "challenged" enough!

YES! Thank you!!!! I get people telling me I’m cruel for “making my puppy work to eat”. He loves it. As an aside we also do - ball pit with kibble and treats - empty soda bottle with kibble (and even just empty to fling around but that isn’t working to eat!) - the muffin tray but put balls on top of the holes so they need to move the balls to get the treats - get your dog to sit/down/4 on the floor/wait, while you hide food (as soon as I say “sit… wait for it” my pup knows what’s going on) and then have them go find it. - cups! 3 cups on the ground. One has food underneath, pup has to sniff it out and knock it over. - busy box: cardboard box with toilet rolls one side folded, hard plastic cups, smaller cardboard boxes/pieces. Chuck treats and their daily meal in there. My pup goes off for this one. - and I think one of the best ones (but requires a lot more work from us) is games! I’ll even sit there and have him catch the food 😂 he’s only a baby so he misses a bit, he’s super goofy. I’ve also seen people make this contraption where they have a broomstick through 3 soda bottles. The bottles are filled with treats. It’s suspended in the air with a stand. So the dog has to use their paws/snout to tip the bottles and knock the treats out. I tried with a stick and one bottle but my stupid arse messed up where to put the hole and the gravity was all wrong; it kept going upside down and emptying by itself haha

My dogs favorite form of enrichment is the snuffle mat! And I’ve found them easy to keep clean, only use dry food and every couple uses toss in the washer and dryer and it’s clean! We also like food puzzles and hiding them around the house so she has to search for the food toy and then work to eat it. Great video!

Excellent video--I like the imaginative 'games' towards the end, with simple placement of treats in geometric patterns (square, triangular) on the ground, no need to buy expensive trays, and more fun when doing this outside IMHO

I, too, am pleased to see you posting new videos! 😊 My dog, a high-strung terrier type, isn't much interested in the usual rubber Kong toy, BUT he Absolutely adores his Kong tiltz Dispenser toy! At least for my pup, it ticks a number of his boxes for an interactive food toy. You have given me a couple of other ideas with this video which I look forward to trying out with him 👍 Thanks!

Your videos have been an invaluable help while we were preparing for and then raising our FIRST EVER puppy - we now have a 11 month old Welsh Corgi Pembroke and we have been using WTE techniques since the day we got him - various configurations of hand feeding while teaching obedience and tricks, rolled and tied up towels, Kong and Kong Wobbler, snuffle matt, and placing kibble around the apartment are our go to on a daily basis - and we can see he loves it! He is crate trained, properly socialized and has not distroyed anything in the apartment - yes! a corgi!!! 🤯 - but it doesn't mean we do not struggle sometimes with some other things but that's another story... It's not what it is - it's what you've trained it to be - is our favourite thing we got from you!!! 🤩 Thank you and keep up the great work! 💪🏻

I don't have a dog, but I love watching your videos nonetheless! I do have three cats and I have used some of your tips on them before. Our newest kitty has this "quirk", where he will only eat a little bit out of the bowl and then only continue eating if I throw his kibble around the room. Your video made this make so much sense to me and I will definitely make use of some of these ideas with my boy 😊 Thank you!

@@SimpawticoDogTraining Tomorrow is one week with Sunday my 8 weeks Cavoodle. So far my macro patience has increased. Close call accidents (2) only. I got distracted once and fall asleep in the sofa. Sleep in is pure luxury. And thank god for working from home! Otherwise I could not have a dog. Our connection has increased enormously. He seems disinterested in the kibble that the breeder recommended. So I bought peanut butter. Sunday becomes cheeky and erratic at bed-time I had to discipline him and call for tine out. Here’s to our adventure. Sunday and furry mama . Thanks Ian.

Well i cannot wait any longer to write a comment ( I'm like in a 2/3 of the video length): Ian is back(YAY!) and whoever is editing this videos - well let's be honest - it's even better than before ! And Before was Amazing so now is ... SimPawticazing? That's sounds great ! Also , now i know that i spended extra money to buy big bowls for my German Shepherd , just to be prepared when she will get bigger and ... Well, i should use a towel instead ,huh. Imagine my parents look tomorrow when i will fill the cardboards with food , same with towels... 😂 One idea what i did used was using Tenis balls - making a hole in it or just cutting it to make it look like PacMan, squeeze it , stuff it with some treats - works pretty good.
@SimpawticoDogTraining
@SimpawticoDogTraining 2 жыл бұрын
Thank you! I actually do all the editing myself (which is partly why it takes longer to get videos out). I love the tennis ball idea. Likewise, in the shelter, we'll often put tennis balls on the pockets of the muffin tins to just kind of make the dogs move things around more. I tried this at home, too, but both of my girls are so toy-obsessed they just ran off with the balls and forgot to eat. Couple of goofballs! 🤣
@denisebrown3834
@denisebrown3834 2 жыл бұрын
@@SimpawticoDogTraining I think my dog would eat the tennis ball first. He is a terror for chewing. This weekend, he chewed up his hessian bed. He loves his Kong and has a maze bowl but I am going to try the cardboard tube holders. He chews up the wood from the kindling box so a bit of cardboard shouldn't worry him. How he hasn't got a mouthful of splinters, I don't know. He was chewing on a rose bush today.

Fantastic video. I use the grazing mat idea for my cat. The food brand we feed her has different options such as kibble, wet food, dehydrated products, and frozen food. We rotate different textured items and flavors on her mat giving her a chance to smell, touch, and graze over the course of an hour. Wet and frozen foods are placed in small 2oz bowls that are dishwasher safe. The mat is a 100 percent cotton bath mat without the rubber, it is washed in the clothes washer. My cat is 16 with arthritis and this activity is easy on her joints and encourages her to move more. Since we started doing this she’s been more calm and started showing verbal excitement for meal time. Similar to the snuffy mat, this grazing mat idea can would work for a dog or cat that is elderly or has arthritis. Spread out the meal with different textures and have enough mats to rotate and wash.

Yay! You're back! 😊 Watched your videos before getting my puppy and the puppy biting video especially was very useful! I was glad to have found it because a lot of my fellow dog owners gave me the advice of making the dog bite its tongue to stop puppy biting 🤔 I'm glad I used your advice and I never hurt my dog to make her learn. As a first time dog owner your videos were my first glance at respectful dog training and what made me research further into less old fashioned ways to teach dogs. 😊

Occasionally, I give my dog whole lamb head, cooked or not cooked. If he is hungry, he eats to the last peace, leaving only the teeth and a small portion of back lobe. Also sometimes I hide a piece of bone in the field and give him Find command. I have seen other people with puppies give them a whole lamb rumen. It is quite tough in raw, so the puppies enjoy tug of war while competing for food.

I just found your channel! I am already excited to try out your tips! My husband and I have a year old Catahula Pit mix. We have found that working to eat really helps with her high strung behavior. It really channels her energy into something positive and productive. One of the things we do is lay a bunch of soccer cones(the flat ones with a hole on top) all over the kitchen and hall. We hide her food or training treats in some of the cones and have her seek. When she finds it she knows to lay down and wait for us to reveal the yummy goodness inside. Thanks for putting your knowledge out here in a simple, easy to understand, and practical way!

So grateful that you are posting videos again --- this one is super awesome, love the explanations and ideas -- thanks so much for sharing. PS: I have made a DIY WTE for my Japanese Spitz - it's as simple as a 30cm piece of left over plumbing pipe (smaller diameter, but of course, you could use larger one for larger dogs) Glued a cap on one end and bought a $2 screw on cap for the other end. Drilled some holes in it of varying sizes and hey presto - a durable, washable WTE toy - he has to roll it around with his nose/paws for the food to come out and because the holes are different sizes it makes him work a little bit more to get the bigger bits out! Lots of fun! Easy to wash up in the sink - it's only plumbing pipe after all!

This seems to be the way to go. My pupper(9yrs) seems to dislike passive feeding. This seemed to have helped make it click! Thanks!

So happy you’re posting again!! We do most of these with our Boston (I studied your videos and course before we brought him home). He’s 2 already, and he’s only ever chewed one slipper. Thanks so much for showing me how to teach house etiquette and to show him that his toys are so much more interesting than wires, trash, laundry, etc. 🥰 If we lived in the same country, I’d 100% join your classes!

Fantastic video! I loved the motivation section at the start, helps to understand why these methods work. I noticed from about a month in that our dog preferred working for her food and ever since then at least one meal a day is earned through some kind of kong, snuffle mat or other puzzle toy.

We. Love. Your. Videos! Thank you! What I do in terms of (as I've just learned) dissection is wrap treats in paper that otherwise would have gone into recycling. As it's so flimsy it takes Gypsy quite a while to get to the treasure.. so many amazing tips here though, she will have a field year!

I have been following your videos and theories (and practicing them) since my first week with my now 1 year old beagle. Thank you very much for your guidance! We recently moved to a new city and a bigger house and my dog is now going through a bit of anxiety (not to mention, we have a basement tenant that has a 4 month old puppy). It seems like she's taken on the role of guard dog for us and the puppy downstairs (she plays/teaches really well with her). Lately, she's been 'On guard' whenever we try to meet new dogs, be it on leash walks or at dog parks. If on leash, she'll lay down tail wagging to greet the other dog but then as they come closer, she'll lunge at them and try to nip them for no reason. My theory is that it has something to do with bigger size, which means her confidence is not great unless it's a same size or a smaller size dog. I would love to know your thoughts on how to train my beagle to be confident with other dogs regardless of their size, and to know that I/WE will protect her and not the other way around. As for the WTE, I use amazon boxes, including the paper in it, and throw in her kibble/treats and she's absolutely loves looking for food in it!! Tires her our physically and mentally!

Thank you! My puppy isn’t living the Kong yet and this gave me some great alternatives to try like the egg carton and toilet paper roll, as well as using the Kong with just dry food so it spills out. Much appreciated!

Ian, so happy to see your videos again. I use the muffin tins for Donte. I tried the maze bowl, but he got sores around his mouth...only Donte. I'm trying to find things to entertain him since he isn't able to be real active now.

We don't have videos on the channel for those things currently because we teach them in our paid courses. It would be a drag for someone to pay for a course and then find the big pieces for free on our KZbin.

Love these ideas! Always love Ian’s videos and resources. MUFFIN TIN’s - not my own idea but my dog works harder (increased enrichment?) by putting dry food in the tin and topping it with tennis ball sized balls. Thanks for your work Ian!

We've done that at the shelter a lot, actually. That's a good add-on. LOL we tried that at our house too, but Olive ran off with the balls and forgot about dinner! 🤣

I'm guessing that this would work with a raw meat/egg dinner for doggies, just a bit messier. Does that sound about right? Thanks for explaining what this means in the video and giving the whole picture!

Great stuff... I was wondering on the muffin tin use stainless steel, ceramic, or silicon? Should I stay away from non-stick?
@SimpawticoDogTraining
@SimpawticoDogTraining 11 ай бұрын
great question! Any of those will work. The silicone is likely the easiest to clean, although (as always) monitor to make sure your dog doesn't start chewing it up. And yes, you are correct, avoid the non-stick teflon-coated stuff. 👍

My dog is very smart. We use both Kongs and a Puzzle box to feed her. She seem to be kinda bored of the puzzle box. How often should you change up the type of enrichment tools? Do you know of any of these tool that can help them around people?

Great training tips! I would also love to get my young dog interested in tennisballs to be able to reward with play and fetch also. But she is not the least bit interested in them at all. How do I start to get her to want them? She is a hunting dog breed with lots of interest in rabbits, so she really do need something to replace that desire to run after live game and hunt them down. I am not letting her do that of course. I was hoping tennisballs and frisbees could replace that and allow her the chase. Love the channel 👌

Absolutly trying some of these! Although the ones in toilet rolls or cardboard are a bit though, since we also do nosework and use that kind of container. Also a big hurray for subtitles, but about halfway through they get jumbled and then cease.

I'm going to have a baby in Nov and have an almost 1 year old Australian Shepherd. I know he will be walked and get his normal attention the first month when we have family in town, but for the next month or two, I was thinking of prepping all his meals for about a month or 6 weeks as WTE to reduce frustration that second and third month while we deal with 3 other kids and a newborn. Do I need to do anything special to freeze the food, etc a month ahead of time?
@SimpawticoDogTraining
@SimpawticoDogTraining 2 жыл бұрын
They can get kind of freezer-burnt after a long time, but most dogs don't seem to care about that. Having a bunch on demand like that will probably be very useful for you. Also, on a side note, you might be interested in our Expectant Mothers course online. Take a look: simpawtico-training.thinkific.com/courses/expectant-mothers

We use a slow bowl for every meal but we feed raw and the diet is quite restricted due to severe allergies - what would you suggest in terms of this scenario? I've thought of freezing the raw food in his Kong but it would create a big unhygienic mess once it starts to thaw🤔
