Oh man, it's a big upgrade from my old one. If I think back on my head unit in high school, that thing was an ancient relic and this thing is alien technology. Amazing to see the progress. I still love good tactile buttons though.

​@@joentell hey how does this work if you have a premium sound system installed in your car? do you need to do something differently? will the audio quality be worse? how is the DAC? should you use an external dac with the USB?

@@wazup3333 unless you're really into SQ, the road noise in most cars makes that sort of stuff unnoticeable in my opinion. Even Tesla's need good sound deadening to reduce the road noise and they're way quieter than any internal combustion engine vehicle. I think it's best to focus on features and usability. Then get good speakers, good subs, strong amps, and invest in good DSP and learn to tune it. Whether it works in your car is dependent on the car. I know in my previous 2018 BMW M3, I wouldn't dare install an aftermarket stereo since that controlled many things related to the car.

@@joentell well I have a premium Harman kardon sound system installed, and it sounds perfect, so I don't the quality to change with this unit. How can I make is use the original amp instead of this amp?

@@wazup3333 I didn't use any of the built-in amps. You can either use RCA out if your system uses those, or use the speaker out and use a high-level speaker out adapter. It really depends on the input your existing amp uses. It may need some kind of wiring harness adapter. It really depends

Please replace that cord connecting your phone. Mine looked like that and then it sparked up and started smoking. True story. Very scary smelling burning electrical and seeing smoke. Such a great dad having song lists for his children. They will only know how blessed they are as they get older.

Pretty cool that the display will tell you details about your car when you hook it up . Integrated dash cam and backup camera are really requirements with all the awful drivers out there 😅😭. Give the van a Porsche sounding exhaust

I had some muscle car sounds and it was hilarious! It's pretty accurate since the OBD2 sensor also knows when the car shifts and the sounds change accordingly. Kinda cool.

Sweet install! Recently put in an amp in my car. I have been using an EKIY vehicle-specific install mostly to have native Plexamp streaming to my car, and it was definitely worth it. Would you consider getting an oversized display? One thing I’ve also noticed is that the experience of Auto or CarPlay really depends on the device running it. One of my older phones runs Auto horribly slow but my Note22 runs it flawlessly, even when wireless. Also, solid excuse for having Vanced, after the other night’s conversation 😂

@@joentell I’ve got the 9” model in my car, & I absolutely love it. Ridiculously fast, has 4G, GPS, OBD2, etc. all the trimmings. Not to mention a shockingly good QLED display. Was $300 OTD. I just love natively running music without dealing with compression from the likes on ppf Auto/CarPlay, Bluetooth, etc, but I definitely recommend going for an oversized display. Shouldn’t block anything in your…Grand Caravan?

@@Nathan_JayI'll have to check it out maybe. 😁 That's the good thing about these older cars, you can actually do stuff to them yourself. I feel like the newer cars aren't really made to be messed with. For sure the F80 M3 I had was horrible to try to work on. Special tools needed for everything!

Hey Joe great review. Does this unit record both the front and back cams to the HU? I know at least one does. Also, do both cams have the SD card insert and if not, which one does. I would love to record the back cam as well at least to the HU and if not at least to an SD card. Thanks

Joe, great video. I just received my S8 premium. Did you find a way, if not using Android Auto, to display or read aloud SMS messages? I just heard that phone notification sounds on the S8 are routed to the BT1 connection so I will not get audible notifications for SMS while driving.

My previous head unit was a Pioneer and I have no complaints about the sound quality whatsoever. If anything, I find it's better imo. I have no data to back that up though.

Regarding the dash cam (USB PVR) location, I'd be mindful how easy it would be to eject and insert the micro SD card as it could be very fiddly. I didn't buy the ATOTO version as I got a cheap AliExpress version and I'm assuming it would have similar restrictions like no GPS support and hard to save a video while the vehicle is in motion. I ended up with a Garmin standalone dash cam instead. Easier to save a video either by pressing a button or via voice command.

6 hours for one camera!!?!?!! I wondered how many expletives were uttered? 😭😅 Definitely a much better backup camera than yours. I saw some complaints about the responsiveness of the touchscreen but that was from people who had the screen protector on. Thanks for all that hard work.

6 hours. Because inevitably something breaks, and that has to be fixed before moving forward. Working at night in the dark is probably a bad idea too. I made some stupid mistakes too. I probably should've waited, but I finally had some time and just wanted to do it.

Is the glare from the gap between the screen and the cover bad? I've been back and forth between this and the S8 standard just because of that, and the lack of tactile buttons. Only difference aside from those is it seems the S8 standard is 5w less in power output. Thanks!

It's running Android, so pretty much any app that runs on Android will run. I'm not sure why you would want to use this instead of an Android tablet, but maybe you have your reasons.
