Another great video. Joe honestly does pay and there’s very few technicians out there that take pride and do the right thing for their customers. And all prayers for Logan and your family from New Jersey.❤

It's admirable for you to admit your mistakes. I've seen people that can't do that due to their pride and they take it out on the customer's wallet. We're all human and we all make mistakes. I've had customers astonished when I admit a mistake but they become loyal customers because they know I'm honest. The only people that don't make mistakes are the people that don't do anything.

I just used my last 762 blower on my truck last weekend. Called CGL to get another, only with: confirmed no heat (how do I confirm that), model and serial number of the unit and then to expect air freight and several days. That whole furnace with the VS ECM is a nightmare. I keep two “used” 762s at the shop to get people by until we change the whole furnace. You should see homeowner faces when I tell them the cost of the part. Well, maybe you’ve seen some. And then, why put in the expensive part just to buy another 1-2 before the secondly is plugged solid.

Thanks for taking the time to show that in detail. I don’t get to see many of those down here. In fact only two of my customers out of thousands have a water furnace.

Several people have asked in the comments, “why such a short lifespan for a furnace compared to years ago?”…and the answer is twofold: 1) the construction of the heat exchanger itself, and 2) the design of being a condensing furnace. The old 80% furnaces had stronger heat exchangers and did not produce the acids which attack the metal surfaces in a condensing furnace …..which shortens the life of the furnace considerably.

My furnce is all original except I put in pressure switch and inducer motor couple years ago, its a 90% Rheem from 1992. Other then that nothing was done to in in all those years.

Had a very similar job today. Another tech from our company properly diagnosed the failed blower motor, but ordered the OEM parts and I returned to do the repair. Customer said another company had replaced a weak blower capacitor a month ago. I did exactly like you did in the video and the smell from that hose was that distinct failed hx aldehydes smell. Trap was never cleaned because it was hard piped, which means the blower was never removed for cleaning either, and it showed. Trap was full of that brown crap and the hx looked just like the one you had. Customer is deciding between hx or new furnace. In your case, based on the amount of crust on that hx, I would have expected that smell to be very strong. The amount of water pouring out of it probably diluted the smell. Also, the last time it ran may have been long enough ago to diminish the smell, too. If the inducer was bad, it was your intention to replace it AND the hx? Wouldn't it have been a significant portion of the cost a new furnace just to do the inducer? Maybe just parts mark up since doing the labor in the hx replacement.

My opinion those are money pits, regardless of what’s wrong this time. What actual savings does the customer see over the life of that piece of crapola? And what’s with that coil of Greenfield, did that installer leave his cutters at home for the kids to use that day?

13 years, not long for a furnace anymore. Growing up our furnace lasted over 30 years. It is the build? Design? So much new fancy crap on them? Why don't they don't last 25 years or more? or is that typical. Thanks.

I always prefer to just change the whole heat exchanger, I guess I look at age and if it's propane or not, but that 120?! Man screw falling down the stairs with that heavy thing, I'd honestly try to change the secondary if the primaries are good, I've only seen the primaries fail once and it was on a 19 year old furnace on lp.

@@biker55555 No problem! If you go back thru his videos, you'll see a lot of this series of Carriers with the same problem. Carrier gives you a 20 year warranty on the heat exchanger, or a credit toward a new furnace.

I will let them smell the exhaust, in some place or another, and show them a combustion analysis. Pulling the blower is just a final visual for them, if needed and for photo documentation.
