I love it too, though by this time in the story Freddy is no longer the villain, but more of a wounded pup. Or more accurately, a pawn who's already been compromised by the system that is now trying to control Anatoly. In this scene, he breaks free of his controllers and reminds Anatoly (and the audience) that the game of chess should not be corrupted. Ironic and rather poetically perfect.

Yep, they were all written by Björn, Benny, and Tim. Chess has been edited a lot over the years, with some songs added or taken out depending on the production. This concert is a combination of the original production and the Broadway production. :)

I truly love that line; not so much for its defiance of The System, but for Freddy's bluntness to Anatoly (and by extension, the audience) that no, he is not going to get the girl (or his family) and your typical Happy Ending. That's all out the window. Up till this point, we (and he) think perhaps all that's still possible. It's a real slap in the face. But since that's all lost, Freddy adds, you might as well win at the one thing that's left to you. Your last piece, so to speak.

Anatoly needs a good "fuck you" at this point in the story. While he's right to resist being manipulated, he's also been enough of a sanctimonious, selfish a-hole. He's only marginally better than Freddy at this point. Props to Freddy for keeping it real.

Anatoly is arguing he should give into the pressure put on him to help his wife, his kids, and florence, while Freddy says “fuck you” to all of that because he thinks anatoly should win for himself, and not give in to manipulation.

Honestly my biggest problem with this book is the anti-Communism. I would much rather see a more balanced story played out. Anatoly and Freddie are such complex characters, I just wish that complexity was mirrored in the treatment of the USSR vs USA stuff. The closest it comes is in the anti-commercialism theme. I wish Molokov were more sympathetic. Of course I'm also a proud Leftist... But man oh man the music...

I think that maybe the anti-communism angle makes the show more balanced in a way? The way each side is shown is incredibly stereotypical: Russians being the sneaky, corrupt politicians and Americans being the loud, obnoxious, money-hungry capitalists. In the end, though, both sides end up colluding to corrupt the game of Chess. I think this kind of stereotypical outlook is sort of a nod towards the feelings of the Cold War, during a time where each side saw the worse in each other, and the exaggerated depictions of the Russians comments on this communist fear in the West. Or maybe I'm being too sympathetic? Either way, I also wouldn't mind them easing on the critique of Communism. After all, there was no "good" side in the Cold War.
