Checking Cylinder Heads for Cracks and Straightness, Project Brutus, Episode 14

In this video we check cylinder heads for our 7.3 liter IDI turbo diesel build. We check them for cracks with magnetic particle testing or magnafluxing and then check them for cracks with dye penetrant testing, also known as zyglo testing, another method of non-destructive testing. We also use a straightedge to check to see if the cylinder heads are warped. In addition, we inspect the bore of our 7.3 IDI block to see if it has a ridge or not.

Love the series so far. Im contemplating doing my 7.3 as well. But i find it hard to source a kit. Got a 89 van with the 7.3, 250k miles on it, doing a transmission rebuild first this summer, no problems with the engine but it would suck to rebuild the transmission only to have engine problems shortly after. Good luck on your build!

Thanks for the comment, YDOC! I was bummed to see the crack between the valves on the '88 head, but the other cracks in the pre-cups aren't a big deal. Still trying to figure out my next move; more cylinder head details coming up in the next video. Scott

Man I had to replace the ones on my 6.9 it only had small cracks on both heads but I didn't want to risk it. I got arp head studs for future turbo install, the heads weight a ton I had to climb in the engine bay 😅

Yikes, if these weigh as much as the 7.3 power stroke heads (I believe, yes?) That means you manhandled 115 lb heads onto that bloc by hand?! You monster! I will personally use a crane for removal and install if I can ever get my hands on another one of these beautiful beasties. I am no monster of a man though. Lol I pray for your back. 😅
