In this video Andy Phillips shows how to check engine code without needing a Scan Tool. Some make and models of vehicles are different, but a lot of cars have this feature.

gmc chevy cadillac you hold down the tripometer reset, while holding down the odometer reset then without letting go, turn the ignition key to on, then, let go of the 2 buttons. codes will appear where the odometer reading is. enjoy

Can you do it more than once? Did this on my 16 JK but missed the code. Now it won't show the code. Read somewhere else this only works 1 time. Thnx

Don't waste your time. This on/off thing is brand specific. It just happens to work on the old Dodge vehicles he owns. And its not even the whole code. That's just a base code. There should be more after the P0456, or whatever that code was. Either way, a scan tool can't tell you what's wrong with a car. You still have to diagnose the problem once you get the code. P0456 is an code that tells you there is a leak in the evap system. It could be a bad gas cap, or a purge valve, a break in one of the lines, etc.... I could list at least 10 more possible causes for that code.

Depending on the year, you may be able to try this while holding down the trip reset button. If not, then you will need a diagnostic reader.

​@@richardhodges7228no jump the obd 1 port with a paper clip then turn on and count the flashes on the check engine light on that is the easiest way. It will go threw them twice

Yes this is a dodge/ christler brand thing. We knew about the key thing back in Obd 1
