Checking Number of RAM Slots and Maximum RAM Capacity using Command Prompt | Computer Tips

Before upgrading our system's RAM, we generally have questions like: does my system have an extra memory slot, or what maximum RAM capacity my system supports? We can determine the number of available RAM slots by looking at the motherboard. But it is relatively tricky if it's a laptop. Opening a laptop is not straightforward.
Alternatively, we can determine both using Command Prompt. The commands used in the video are as follows:
1. Determining number of RAM slots on a motherboard:
wmic memphysical get memorydevices
2. Determining capacity of installed RAM:
wmic memorychip get devicelocator, capacity
3. Determining maximum RAM capacity supported by motherboard:
wmic memphysical get maxcapacity
Thank you.

"Remove 4GB slot" if you mean that if you can remove a 4GB RAM from a slot and replace it with some better capacity RAM then it depends on the maximum RAM capacity allowed by the motherboard. If you have 2 slots and Maximum RAM capacity for your motherboard is suppose 16GB then, you can put RAM sticks of 8 GB (Max) in each slot. This is how in general the configuration is allowed. For clear information you may look into your laptop's user manual or upgrade manual.

I guess the system is not reading actual data. Or may be its reading the maximum supported RAM by CPU. But the motherboard generally bottlenecks it as per manufacturer's design. You can check the manufacturer's website and look for the specs for your system's model, to find the maximum supportable RAM by motherboard.

@tinytips4823

The best thing is to get a memory with the same specs and manufacturer as the one you already have. But before upgrading you need to be sure of how much RAM your motherboard can support. If your motherboard has 2 slots and allows a maximum of 32 GB RAM then probably the maximum capacity RAM that you can put in one slot is 16GB. You can find this detail even in the user or service manual of your system. If one of your RAM is, suppose DDR4 3200 MHz then, the other RAM should be DDR4 and 3200 MHz. If you buy lower or higher frequency RAM the performance will always bottleneck to the lower frequency. CAS Latency, the lower is better but still depends on the other one. So you may check the specs of the RAM you already have. You may use app called CPUz to see the details. You can also use Crucial System Scanner app (search on Google) by Crucial to get some idea about upgrades for your system. That app has an executable of 276KB and on running it, it will ask for open with. Open with any browser. It will check your system and recommend the upgrades. It gives recommendations for memory and storage devices. The most important thing to take care is which DDR RAM you have, the form factor (PC or lappy) and the frequency of it. CAS Latency don't worry much.

Help I entered the command and it said i have 2 ram slot but when i checked in task manager it said 1 ramslot
@tinytips4823
@tinytips4823 8 ай бұрын
In this case you can try application named CPUz. In that under SPD tab, you will see memory slot selection. There it should show 2 slots, in the drop down, if there are 2. Or 1, if there is only 1. But there is always some possibility of not able to read hardware data using software commands correctly. If you still don't find the answer then the best and fool proof option, without opening hardware, is to go to manufacturer's website and find the detailed specification for your product (they ask product number or serial number). What ever they have specified is final.

What if it shows that i have 2 slots but how do i know if its soldered or not pls help
@tinytips4823
@tinytips4823 8 ай бұрын
There is no ideal way to know it using software. But we may try some things to get to more educated guess, without opening up the laptop. 1. We can get CPUz application. Under SPD tab, we can see memory slot selection. The dropdown shows slots. Each slot option will give details of the RAM. You can get module manufacturer, the part number from there and check on internet if the installed memory with that part number is some kind of external memory or not. 2. You may use the command in command prompt, "wmic memorychip get devicelocator, partnumber, formfactor". This will give the location of the part on motherboard. it can be left or right slot or bottom or top slot. Probably slot would mean non-soldered. Though it is not 100% sure. 3. Sometimes you may have form factor displayed as onboard, or row of chips. It may mean that all or one of the ram is soldered. Sometimes SODIMM form factor is displayed in task manager, but 1 RAM can still be soldered on it. So still unsure. 4. You may install an application named Free PC Audit. It is free. And in that under memory slot, you can see from factor. If it says unknown then chances are it is soldered. But if it says SODIMM then it may or may not have soldered RAM. 5. Best way is to check your system's Product ID. It will be mentioned on box or on laptop some where. Then go to your manufacturer's site. Search the specification on the site based on the product ID. There you can find how many slots are present. How much it is upgradable. Max capacity. If It has onboard RAM or not, etc.

@tinytips4823
@tinytips4823 9 ай бұрын
You might have 8 GB RAM already installed on your system. There are a lot of IdeaPad Gaming 3 models in the market. Model number can tell about it more specifically. It is quiet a new laptop, so I believe that it should have 2 slots. If the command line is not detecting the specs correctly then there are few other ways to look. You can install CPUz application. It shows the hardware specs. Under SPD tab, it shows the slots in Memory slot selection dropdown list. It should show specs for one of the RAM on one slot and the other slot should be empty. The other place to look at is Lenovo's product specification reference website. It is psref[dot]lenovo[dot]com. There scroll little bit down and hover at the laptop card. click on the IdeaPad link. You will see a popup kind of screen on top displaying models of various ideapad series. scroll down to the gaming series and select ideapad gaming 3 with your laptop model number. A new page will open as per the laptop model. click on the specification tab. There under Memory section you will find details like memory type, maximum upgradable memory capacity and number of memory slots on your laptop.

Thanks, and yes , it will work for any windows system. But, after calculation, I have seen people getting too good to be true numbers. So, its not foolproof. It is good for preliminary checks. In case of erroneous numbers appearing then, better turn to the user manual provided by manufacturer. Can be downloaded from their website. Your system supports upto 32Gb and has 2 slots then probably, it must be 16GB each slot. You can go for another RAM stick for the other slot, but upto 16GB in capacity. Your system's user manual will also have article on upgrade. When you upgrade your RAM, make sure it matches the old ram Speed. The speed should be supported by the motherboard as well as processor. If you buy a supported high speed RAM and match it with a lower speed old RAM then the new RAM speed will be bottle necked to the lower speed. You can check the speed from task manager - performance - memory - speed (written at lower right area). To talk about Latency then, lower the latency better is the performance. But, try to get new RAM that matches the old RAM's latency. But if it doesn't match then the lower one will be bottle necked to higher one. But, Both RAMS will work. In your system's user/upgrade manual, you can find the part number of the upgradable components. Searching by the part number, while shopping will also help. You can use CPUZ application to determine the speed and latency.

How to check the max frequency of ram the system supports?
@tinytips4823
@tinytips4823 3 ай бұрын
The only way to check how much RAM speed your laptop model supports maximum is by checking it on the manufacturer's website. User manual also specifies it. If you put a RAM module that has speed more than the supported speed then, the RAM speed will be clocked down. So its better to check the supported speed before investing. Also, in the case of multiple RAM sticks in a system, if one RAM has slower speed and the other has speed more than it then again the faster will be clocked down to the slower Ram's speed. Bottlenecks the performance. But if you also want to check what is the current speed of your RAM then you can use this command in command prompt: "wmic memorychip get speed" Even the Task manager shows the speed of current installed RAM modules.

Your system might be supporting maximum of 32GB RAM. If so, then each slot can take upto 16GB RAM stick Maximum. You might have got 8GB RAM from manufacturer but that can be just sales configuration. Now to make sure if your system really supports max RAM capacity of 32GB, you must look for the specification for your product on manufacturer's website (using your product number or serial number). This command line methods is just preliminary checks. Sometimes Manufacturer bottlenecks the CPU's full potential through their board designs. You may search the specs on website or your system repair manual might have a section on RAM configuration. If your system supports max 32GB RAM then, you can upgrade it.

Check in task manager performance tab, how many slots are used and are present. I am not sure if one RAM in your system is soldered to the board. The best and only sure way to resolve this confusion is to refer the Manual for your system. It can be downloaded from the manufacturer's website.

The configuration generally goes like this: If your system supports, say, 16GB max RAM capacity and it has 2 slots then, the max capacity RAM stick you can put on one slot is 8GB. So to upgrade to full 16 GB RAM, you will need 2x8GB RAM sticks. You can put less capacity on a slot. Like you can put 4GB on one slot and 8 GB on other if your system support 12GB or more Max RAM capacity. Its just that if you want Max RAM of 16GB (and your system has 2 slots), you can not put one stick of 16GB on one slot. You can also find the upgrading configuration in the technical specification manual for your system model, on vendor's website.

Using command line tools do help, but the fool proof method is the manual. Its provided by the manufacturer. So what ever upgrade configuration provided in there should be accurate. And searching in digital copy of the manual is very easy. One can use the command line tool to do initial research on the possible upgrades. Once we are sure of possible upgrade, we can refer the manual to see the allowable configuration. Many manuals also come with part numbers of the upgradable hardware. One can shop for the hardware, referring to that part number.
