I was called out to this call because there was no heat in the morning. It later started to produce heat. I still checked on it. I adjusted gas pressure with the fieldpiece SDMN6. Found a very rusty heat shield, which I replaced. I also noted an abnormal flame in the first burner. #hvac #hvaclife #fieldpiece #rheem #SDMN6 #makita

As a service manager now after being in the field for last 29 years the toughest thing to deal with is getting younger techs to take the effort to do the calls the RIGHT way. Taking the time and energy to check all of the unit like this heatexchanger inspection. The extra effort not to bail on it even though things like rotted screws get in the way. “Well I wasn’t there for that” is the go-to response when the call comes back in.

Wanting the techs to do a detailed checks on all calls is fine , but are the techs giving enough time to do all that or they are bambarge with calls , repairs and maintenance all in one day ?

I work for a Rheem dealer in Burlington NC, and we service a lot of gas packs like this. I find that the stainless steel heat exchangers are very robust, but like you mentioned in the video, they tend to fail on the backplate. The radiation shield is a commonly replaced part, because they are a sacrificial lamb so to say. Always rusting out. We carry them as part of our truck stock. The Rheem/Ruud packs are very easy to work on though, and very easy to diagnose problems. Great video, thanks for sharing your knowledge. What you work on is pretty much what I work on here in NC

Hello sir I just want to thank you for posting this info. I learn from you're daily experiences as a relatively new tech. As a prior service member I see the attention to detail you share. Thanks again.

I saw it! You have quickly became one of my favorite hvac channels. I was cleaning out my van this afternoon and was listening to an older video of yours where you had metallica playing in your van. Rock on 🤘

That 2000, 3.5-ton gas pack had the most rusty-lookin coil I have ever seen.

I guess I missed where you cleaned flame sensor, burners, brass orifice, vacuum port on draft motor 😂

I am a little concerned with your startup pressure. Next time you do this you should take pressures from both sides, Inlet and Outlet gas pressures on that valve. Sometimes the gas company has a problem with something called a creeping regulator ( when the unit is turned off the pressure on the inlet side should escalate a little bit and then lock up, we call this lockup pressure but in the event the pressure keeps escalating a little bit and a little bit more and a little bit more we call this a creeping regulator and the gas utility should be contacted about a possible pressure problem). Hope this information helps and stay safe out there 👍🛠. PS- you may want to use your CO2 condensate drain cleaner on the burner Venturis in order to clean any debris or spider webs🕸🕷.

something looks fishy there for sure, I've seen bugs and people painting meters fill the regulator vent screens with paint/mud daubers and make it react very slow and over-pressure. for sure need to check incoming and manifold outlet, as that could be gas co. regulator or the gas valve itself. not good either way.

@@throttlebottle5906 , you're absolutely right. I was a first responder / service technician 35 years for the full service gas utility in St Louis, Missouri and probably replaced well over 20, 000 Regulators in my career. Everything you said is all possible causes and one of the most common causes is as simple as debris on the regulator seat or a torn regulator seat ,this is why taking inlet pressures (lock up & working) is so important.👍🛠.

I've had that happen to me on a conversion, gas pressure was too low. That low starting pressure likely issue, gas valve might be faulty.
