I think you're underselling that device. I have a year old Asus PN50 with a 4800u. As a cpp developer on Linux it is excellent. It's idle power is so low I never turn it off. 16 threads can chew most things that I throw at it. I run three 1080p displays. I love it. So quite. If you don't need GPU power these small systems are very good. Mine has 2TB storage and 64gig ram.

I'm a big fan of Minisforum type systems. They are a killer solution for every situation other than heavy GPU usage. I got a UM350 for a family member (who doesn't game) early this year to replace their 10-year-old HP.

Just waiting on a 6xxx series and RDAN2 in this form factor. I was going to pull the trigger on one of Minisforum platforms more than once. But, RDNA2, DDR5, PCIe 4.0 and Ryzen 6xxx mobile series in this for factor would make me very happy ...for a while at least.

Once we can get a machine like this with at least one (fully-featured) USB4 port, I'm all in. I especially like how it also gets its power over USB-C. So the power brick is pretty modular, and easily replaceable.

You should check out Sunshine and Moonlight, they're open source implementations of Nvidia's game streaming thing and can run on both Windows and Linux (and AMD/Intel hardware!).

I had a Minisforum HX90 for a litlte while, but it kept freezing/crashing on me. Couldn't tell if it was because of the memory (even though it passed memtest86). So now I'm using a Beelink GTR5 5900HX instead and that thing is a beast. I'm currently running 10 VMs off of it (I bought mine with 64 GB of RAM and a 1 TB NVMe SSD) and it's been completely solid! It's amazing to go from a mid tower computer to these mini PCs now - just the reduction in the power consumption plus the fact that the package size is, a lot of times, smaller than the Corsair CX750M power supply that I tend to use in my tower systems. That's just crazy how far we've come with mini computing these days.

I'm actually looking at this very same model to use a a Home Theater PC with some lite gaming and EMU stuff on my Samsung TV. I also want to connect all my USB Storage Devices onto it for ease of connection ;) I find that sometimes the Windows Share will break and I have to reboot to revivie that shared connection.
@ewenchan1239
@ewenchan1239 2 жыл бұрын
@@johnmijo There is a possibility that Windows share might be getting (temporarily) disconnected if your system goes to sleep. I would check to make sure that that isn't the case with your system. There is also a potential possibility that you are trying to connect to your system over WiFi instead of via hardwire, that may happen as well. And I also don't remember if Windows share has an inactivity timeout or not. I don't think that it does, but you might try to google that to make sure that there isn't one set by default, and/or if there is, set the timeout time to be something ridiculously high if it needs to have a positive integer value for that field. (It's been a while since I've had to use Windows sharing as most of my systems have moved on to some form of Linux as the host OS for data storage applications.) Thanks.
@johnmijo
@johnmijo 2 жыл бұрын
@@ewenchan1239 thanks, but I turn off power management and any kind of sleep modes on my computers. Both in the BIOS/CMOS settings and the OS power plan settings, basically I use my own CUSTOM settings.
@ewenchan1239
@ewenchan1239 2 жыл бұрын
@@johnmijo No problem. Yeah, I'm not sure then. The last time that I was using Windows share, I was still running Windows XP, so there weren't as many potential modes of failure back then compared to now. Sorry that I wasn't able to help.
@johnmijo
@johnmijo 2 жыл бұрын
@@ewenchan1239 I do know it could be problematic using XP and then was a bit better with Windows 7 and better yet in Windows 10 and 11, but not fully cured it seems. It is the Windows Share(SAMBA) pipe getting bjorked and to fix it you reboot and the share gets created once more and is fine. It seems to be purely random timing, no really reason why it happesn.

Wendell I'd love to see you have a go at an MSI Pro DP20Z, because it's the only AM4 mini PC I've ever seen that looks like it could actually support some low-profile aftermarket cooler options. It'd be fun to see if you can get a Rembrandt chip working, beef up the cooling, and see how far you can push it in gaming and compute.

If I use the VESA-mount, is it possible to configure it so that it turns on automatically when I turn the monitor on? It seems quite a bit difficult to have to reach back behind the monitor and find the power button otherwise.

A while ago a buddy's PC died and he needed to do a fresh install of windows but didn't have a PC him self to get make an install USB. Some one had built him a PC with a spinning rust hard drive and it died, lol. So he waited like two weeks before a friend of his could get him the install media. So my use case scenario for a mini PC would be to assist me while generating install media and maybe being a portable media thing when travelling, I do like how I could fit it in a backpack though, would make going to a buddies house to work on their PC a lot easier. That said the cost of these micro PCs if you want a 'good' configuration that can do any thing is pretty steep and if you are slapping a graphics card into one you might as well just build a Micro ATX computer instead as the whole thing isn't very portable. If Minisfourm made a micro PC that had a case large enough to fit most graphics cards and a really good air cooling solution I'd consider buying it because then I wouldn't have to screw around with building an ITX form factor PC. It would almost certainly be cheaper too as those ITX builds get EXPENSIVE.

old thin clients like HP T620 plus or T730 Plus or Fujitsu Futro S920 have a quadcore pre-ryzen AMD CPU with AES NI and a pcie slot for a quad port nic. They are strong enough for full gigabit routing and relatively decent 100-ish Mbit OpenVPN. They usually consume around 10-15w idle with a quad card (decent modern quad cards). They are all just normal mini-pc with a UEFI firmware, so you can just connect a USB and install pfsense/opnsense/whatever

My reason for asking is my OLDer TV (2018) has 200x200 mounting holes and would like to mount this minisforum UM580 to the TV backside to clear up space around the TV table (without using just one/1 hole to hang it from).. SO, please SEE this question and reply what dimensions this mounting bracket is/are (smallest to largest)... THANKS MUCH!!! 🧋
