Checkmate ends the game. The king safety is the most important factor in evaluating any position. Thus, we should train the crucial skill of assessing the king's safety by engaging in rich examples. Everyone can count material, but it is not straightforward to judge the king's security. If you properly judge the king's safety, you will avoid phantom fears and handwaving, while your calculation will also improve (without proper evaluation, the calculation is useless).
King safety also connects to piece trades in chess. If the enemy king is not secure, we should generally seek to keep the queens on the board. This underscores the practical significance of dedicated training in evaluating king safety.
If you want to explore these concepts further and turn your knowledge into skill, please check my Chessable courses on positional skill building (the Art of series).

For the homework position: looks completely safe to castle queenside. We have the Petrosian pawns (a la Spassky - Petrosian 1969), where a3 is met with b3 and b3 is met with a3. The queenside cannot be opened up and so we should just castle and bring our rook into the game.

Another great video from the best chess coach on KZbin! From a deep learning point of view, I love it when you show two positions with one small difference between them, e.g. the last position before the homework position. The huge difference between the Black pawn being on h6 versus h7 is wonderfully instructive - thank you, Dr. Can!

Thank you Dr. Can for another excellent video from a _great_ teacher! Re: Homework - my reaction is I would certainly castle _towards_ the pawn storm for two reasons - 1) no matter which pawn white pushes, b6 or a6, we can lock up the position with a6 or b6 respectively, and white king will be nicely tucked away over there with a wall of blocked pawns in front of it no pieces can easily break through, and 2) it brings the rook over to join the party on the king-side with ideas of joining a queen battery on f8.

Thank you for this lovely comment and the great answer to the homework position ☺️

homework spoiler - no engine The center has a closed pawn structure that can't be opened by a pawn flank attack due to white's lack of a f-pawn and the b-pawn already advanced to the fifth rank. It will also be very diffiult for white to activate the white bishop as long as the pawn structure doesn't change. White lacks a black-square bishop to help undermine the pawn chain. After O-O-O white can push b7 but a6 allows Black Kb8 if needed for safety. A6 allows black to play b6 and create an unbreakable chain. (edit add: in a real game, I would find O-O-O b7 axb7 axb7 etc etc very difficult to calculate and evaluate although with precise moves is likely good for black because of better piece activity and the king remains safe.) In summary, white does not have a strong enough pawn storm or attack on the center or queen-side to punish a queenside castle choice by black. After which, black has the initiative and white's position remains very passive.
@Dr.CansClinic

Thank you! You correctly judged the black king being safe on the queenside. But White cannot play b7 after that. Did you mean b6? Should Black grab the pawn on b6 then?
@eschiedler
@eschiedler 2 ай бұрын
@@Dr.CansClinic yes I meant b6 typo. Yes white b6 black axb6 and if white axb6 it is a blunder but not easy to calculate lines after Qxb6 so wait and see what remains after white's moves they are all passive.

Homework: I think it's fine for black to castle long 0-0-0 since black can block White's pawnstorm ➕️ I don't see any of White's pieces that can attack Black's king. Another great video, Dr. Can!

Hi Can - I'm an 1800 FIDE player who's only recently made a return to classical chess because of your chessable courses (I'm addicted to them). I was wondering if you had any material on analysing your own games or planning to release a course like that. Cheers!

I made one video about it: kzbin.info/www/bejne/qHWplHSeoJ6jidE But I will surely produce more videos on this subject. It is hard to create a course about it :)

0-0-0 The pawns on a7 and a8 provide a safe nest for the King. I looked at Ke7, but Qf2 would probably allow White to force our good Bishop out with his bad Bishop. Thanks, Dr Can, always interesting.

I love this. Queenside castle is wonderful since we have the padlock formation. This technique has become part of my chess knowledge so much so that its like knowing how a knight moves. Ive used it so many times that I just sort of chuckle when my opponent pushes his pawns. Boop. Push past. Now what? Lol

16:27 isnt it just Bg5 instead of g4 and black is just positionally busted/completely losing? so both scenarios have their own disadvantages pawn on h6/h7 just makes the nature of Whites conversion different, the position stays bad

That is a good positional move. The nature of the advantage becomes different indeed, especially after the queen trade (this video was about the king safety so I did not delve into that good knight vs bad bishop ending).
