I've never really played the king's gambit but I'd imagine the opponent doesn't really hold onto the pawn that strongly

You’d be surprised. It’s the same with queens gambit/catalan where they try to use that pawn as an outpost to encroach on your territory as that pawn is fairly hard to capture and that chain restricts your queenside movement which is important as it’s where you weaknesses lie.

depends on your level. I always go for kg and ive had this as white maybe once. this opening is called the muzio gambit. After bc4 the point is to give away the f3 knight if they go g4 it's these ne5 ideas are always important to keep in mind tho

I often play g5 and h6 to hang on to the pawn, but after h4, f6 is bad. Bg7 is the better move, allowing the trade of pawns and rooks, and hanging on to the pawn.

@@naneri ik what the muzio is, but youre right apparently theres also a salvio gambit so after bc4 you can indeed avoid a muzio as white

I can confirm, at 700 elo, enemy players doesnt protect the pawn that ate the gambit pawn.

It has happened once, it was really funny. After f6 white played Nxg5 (which loses to hxg5 and black is up a knight) but black played fxg5 so the same mate happened lol🤣 the game is Greco vs NN
