Felicitations are in order for the 2K subscribers. Your format is unique and one of the very best about Märklin explaining stuff never seen before so well clarified; hopefully will draw in many more. Thanks for following up on electroplating in particular 👌

So far I have 41 loks, mostly Piko. 30 are old loks built in the '70 e '80. This summer I'm travelling to Saxony and will hunt some more. Great hobby.

Glad the plating held up to testing😀envious of the neat storage, perhaps a link to the different types if still available? Indeed rusting not a problem here, but lubricants drier much quicker, will be interested n how long the German gun oil you recommended lasts😀

My nickel plating failed. The nickel came off very easily. Did you etch the shoe in chloric acid before nickel plating? Very nice of you to briefly show your collection. 😊

@@The3rdRailI used 800 grid waterproof sandpaper and cleaned with thinner. No worries I don’t give up. I will buy a bottle of chloric acid and etch it before nickel plating. I will report the result here later. 🙂

@@Kapparie Based on what I have seen and read, I think this might have to do with the solution, did you make it yourself? If you bought something ready made, you might need to use a specific voltage and timing. If you made the solution, are you sure your nickel strip is over 99% nickel? Hope this helps, I don't know more than that...
@Kapparie

@@The3rdRail I made the solution myself. I think the nickel is 99%. But not sure.

Hi, great video. Does the damp of the garage effect your stock and track. I’m going to expand my layout in the future. This will involve a move from the house to a shed/garage and I’m worried the damp of the winter will effect the k track

🙏 I can't say it does, I was worried about this at first, but haven't noticed anything happening with the rolling stock, the way I store everyting might be helping a bit, and the garage is part of the building I live in, so the temperature swings are pretty low. Steel track (M, K, C) will rust over time whatever the conditions unless you live in Arizona. First of all, I run trains regularly so this automatically keeps the track in good shape. I do go around the layout every 12 to 18 months to remove any surface rust that might have developped, this only happens on a handful of random spots. I treat the track with a paraffin based cleaner (track magic for example) in the process, this leaves a coating behind that will act as a rust barrier. I don't touch the track otherwise, apart from a bit of vacuuming once a year or as needed (dust from building work in the area or gardener blowing leaves away near the garage etc...).

@@The3rdRail excellent, probably a good idea to remove the digital controls back into the house. I would imagine a house has just as much dust, especially if you have a dog ect. I tend to run mine every day. As I find I need very little track cleaning. Do you use a peco track rubber when you do get the black build up on point blades as I do. This might be dust build up.
@The3rdRail
@The3rdRail Жыл бұрын
I have plenty of electronics on the layout (raspberry Pi, wifi router, wifi switches for turnout and accessory control) they have been there for a a few years now with no issue. I have a track rubber I use to remove surface rust, point blades on Märklin track don't play any role electrically speaking, so unless this causes mechanical issues I wouldn't bother with cleaning them.

With one of my locomotives, the slider wasn't far enough down (not enough pressure on the point contact), so I simply soldered a defective slider onto the mounted slider, since then the locomotive has been running without any problems 🙂

Hello, I have a question unrelated to this particular video. Recently you referred to a model train database web site that lists all the Marklin models. I don't recall which video that was one and now I'd like to look it up. Could you please paste it here in the comments? Thanks.

Hello its me again may I ask how to clean old vintage rails as I have a box worth of the 3 rail version (no pins but instead a silver rail in the middle) of the track and currenly unused for many decades... how can I clean them but most importantly switches... as they are backups of other layouts they have been used years ago but are now stiff and dont work properly. P.s. (they are in alright condition as they dont have any rust but mainly oxidised with the black matter) Thanks for the help!
@The3rdRail
@The3rdRail Жыл бұрын
Hi, you just need a tr`ck rubber, some time, patience and a soft cloth and vacuum cleaner to collect the resulting dust. For your turnouts, if they are backups, it is likely they weren't working well already years ago... You need to clean them and remove any dust/grit that might have collected under moving parts, some might be missing their spring(s), so you'd have to check that too. There are plenty of details to look at, more than would be appropriate for the comment section. Best you go to an online forum and check posts there, there is usually plenty of material, just keep to basic steps and avoid intensive surgery such as opening electromagnets, if something sticks, it is either dirty, covered in dry grease or bent and needs adjusting.
