When they exploded onto the SF scene they were billed as America's answer to the Beatles. They sure seemed like it at the time. That's how good they were. Long live the Grape.
@chrisbotelho7212 Жыл бұрын
They were never America's answer to the Beatles. Come on man. They were a community of pot smoking boozed up hippie bands along with the Dead, the Airplane, Quicksilver Messenger Service, Big Brother, Peanut Butter Conspiray, and Country Joe among others. America's answer to the Beatles? Haha right.

How did I miss listening to this all these years? Even without the 3rd guitar of Spence, they were still great. Jerry Miller was kind of unknown except in the Bay Area and Santa Cruz for those years, and Mosley knew how to put down great bass lines. My favorite SF band - I still play their first album and LOVE it so much. P.S. I saw them in the summer of 1967 and they blew me away.

I just disocvered this song about 45 mins ago and all I can say is wow! What a heavy song. I wish they jammed out longer on their songs. There was some serious talent in this band. I've known about these guys for so many years but tonight is the first time I've ever listened. Some good days ahead?

How the Grapes dd not become one of the major supergroups of the '60s and '70s is a colossal tragedy. Well, we have what they recorded and must be satisfied with that. But still...

The expressive power of the sound architecture breaks with any form of transcription of the real to attach itself to the expression of an elusive universe. Colors and rhythm of this composition is a language that gives voice to exaltation

Thanks for the post. Always had a soft spot for Bob Mosley's vocals. Pure soul. The harmonies on the album version are just killer. In a better world, you'd be hearing Grape classics all over your radio...which only reinforces my belief in a vengeful supreme being who has abdicated all responsibility, handed the car keys to Satan, and let slip the dogs of war, Lady Gaga and Ke$ha. (As they say in New Jersey, " I got yer summer of love right here.")

I used to own a CD of these Amsterdam Radio recordings; I'm sorry I traded it back in to the record store. I still think this is one of the most distinctive examples of both Jerry's and Peter's guitar-playning; it really blows me away. It also is remarkable, quite frankly, how well Moby Grape's crosstalk and guitar sound held up without Skip in the band, as was the case for all of those Amsterdam radio recordings.

I discovered Moby Grape in 1972 only ( I was fifteen ) through " 20 Granite creek ". Far better than Status Quo , loved by my school mates ! Afterwards, I back tracked and tried to discover all their LPS ( not very easy to find them in France at that time ). Decades after, I am still amazed by this wonderful group and so sad because of the curse which prevents them to " make it ". But the music remains and it is unforgettable.

nobody i know thought they were underrated at the time - at least on a par w/Buffalo Springfield if not the Byrds, on the east cost anyhow. that 2d lp tho... the great tracks sold short by jokes and jams falling flat...Skip turning into not a good influence then a disaster... and still maintaining this level of vulnerable insight.

This is really one of their more remarkable performances. I've always felt put off by the lead guitar (aka the "blues riff") of the studio version. I just never got it. But here, it's so intergrated from beginning to end that it makes sense. It's almost a strange, eerie 'conversation' btween lead guitar and Lewis, who is so winsome and unadorned. It's pretty sick actually

In other Grape songs, like "Looper", "The Place & the Time", 'the 'alternate versions' seem to have that extra edge that you refer to in Jerry Miller's soulful guitar and Lewis's vocal here.
