Irving Berlin, like Cole Porter, (and very few others) wrote both the words and the music for all of his hit songs. One of my favorites of his -- CHEEK TO CHEEK -- was included by “Canada's other gift to jazz” (after Oscar) - Diana Krall in her Live in Rio Concert(s) of a decade ago. This fine video was sent my way minutes ago, by a jazz website. As if to say, “Bet this is (still) your favorite” jazz treatment of this one!" Yes sir, for so many reasons: Diana's vocal! Her piano playing!! The jazz giants she includes in her band! The subtle brilliance of an 'all brushes' solo by Jeff Hamilton - who started out with pianist Monty Alexander in 1975, and is co-leader of 'The Clayton/Hamilton Jazz Orchestra' (the late Natalie Cole's favorite band on her latter-day albums). That's his co-founder John Clayton on bass. The guitarist, Anthony Wilson - who for years has accompanied Diana brilliantly - as he does here. What a perfect solo.
