There's an SNL video that goes exactly like this, 'The Champ'. The guy gets back from winning a wrestling match for his school and is all happy, and then he goes to the TV. There's a local news story about how the town came together because they pitied him; the guy let him win the wrestling match to be nice, the cheerleader flirted with him to be charitable, the jocks were friendly to him because they pitied him, etc. etc., And the interviewer is congratulating them on how nice they all are and meanwhile the guy's heart is breaking watching it on the TV. Doesn't a really seem like a kindness. Finding out it was all fake could give you serious trust issues and even worse self-esteem than before (if you even had self-esteem issues to start with), learning that everyone sees you as a charity case!

Ermmm this is weird. It's like she's put on a pedestal and is considered special just because she's a cheerleader and blonde? Celebrating this is basically just reinforcing the fact that she as a person is above him just bc of her image. He deserves to go with someone who wants to go with him because they like him, not because they already see themselves as more than him and want to feel good about themselves.
@mayebeline11493 жыл бұрын
If we were all being truly honest here then we could acknowledge she is above him as a person: she has far more qualities that are desired by other human beings (whether they be potential friends, potential romantic partners, potential employers, or anyone else really). She is the one who will be taking care of special needs kids, and he is the one who will need to be taken care of. Whether we're talking biologically or pragmatically, she is superior to him in just about every way. There is no reason a society would ever want him over her, and I personally as a member of that society can understand that assessment. Maybe people could have a meaningful discussion about the comparative value of human life if it wasn't always immediately stopped by some child-minded adult who throws themselves into the conversation just to scream "STOP STOP STOP THIS IS WRONG WE HAVE TO PRETEND ALL LIFE IS PERFECTLY EQUAL AT ALL TIMES". Well no, we don't. They aren't equal. Which one is less likely to have a child with birth defects? Which one is less likely to make a mistake when engineering a building? Which one is less likely to let a child die when they're babysitting? The list goes on. They are not equal and never will be, thanks to factors largely out of their control. Is that unfair? Yes. Life is definitely unfair. So let's not pretend they are identical creatures. They are not. One gets to stand in a privileged spotlight as a member of our species who is clearly superior to most others in many measurable ways, while the other is so horrifically disadvantaged that they are incapable of accomplishing anything meaningful for our species no matter how long they exist. That's just reality, along with the fact that due to her status, she could have picked anyone to associate with, and she allowed it to be him. It's too bad some of the people commenting on KZbin don't have the same understanding of this situation as the kid's mother. She clearly understood that his condition would normally relegate him to the lowest possible social status, one where he could normally never form any relationship of significance with normal functioning members of society, never mind with members of the highest social tier. And yet this girl was willing to pull him into her world, to let him share her spotlight. Anyone with any understanding of the world around them should be able to understand what happened here and why it was nice of the girl to do this. Surely it would be nice if someday this wasn't considered a big deal, if people were treated equally despite their obvious disadvantages and genetic inferiority. Those aren't things they can control, so it shouldn't be held against them, right? But that's not how things are yet, and that's not how things ever will be if it's not brought to anyone's attention when this stigma is being challenged. This girl challenged society's expectations of who she should associate with, and the only way to normalize that is to make sure everyone is aware of it. The more people see it happening, the more normal it will seem to them. Society will never widely accept something as normal if they never see it happening -- covering the story like this is exactly how you get people to see that it's happening.

We were talking about the movie, Frozen (his favorite), and he randomly asked “Hey, do you want to go to homecoming with me?” I said yes without even having to think twice, and he sweetly replied “Yeah, I thought you would.” We soon became a couple, and we went to every high school dance together since, and we had the honor of being our school’s first-ever prom king and queen our senior year. Everyone: Omg wow a cheerleader chose a *Special Needs* kid as her prom date!! Wow. She could've chosen a hunky-dory football player but she chose a *Special Needs* kid!
@she-who-musnt-be-named96243 жыл бұрын
I don’t think they would do this for the lead football player so why to him? They treat him like a stray puppy instead of a regular person.

I wish I had the words to say how much this moved me. I know what she knows on a very personal level. I was married to a 'special' person for 22 years. Cerebral palsy and mentally challenged. My spouse passed away this past March from cancer. I'm 68 years old and those 22 years with my spouse was heaven on earth. I pray we will be together again in heaven, God willing. Love sent out to Kenzi......she can see what I could see.

I know a family with 3 sons, and they’re pretty much all handsome and popular. Then they ALL asked someone. But they asked, an autistic girl, a girl with a deformed face, and I believe the third was autistic too. All that it was recognized by is that their parents posted on Facebook because it was prom. It wasn’t like a whole frickin interview with them. They did a good deed and moved on.

The fact people are making a big deal out of this just shows how shallow society is. " Oh, that pretty cheerleader chose to go out WITH THE LIKES of him. Aint she sweet?"🙄

The Recognition shows other kids what they could learn from to be better people I hear what your saying but I also think it's a message alot of other girl her age need to hear highschool kids can be so mean she is setting a good example

@@lfox_777 I don't agree with advertising a good deed, but you raise a good point - it does lead a good example regardless of the motives.
