Childhood memories have come flooding back after watching this.

They used to say that People remembered where they where when JF Kennedy got shot. Well, I will always remember where I was when Dawn Run won the Gold Cup. I was standing in a Pub in Cashel. Standing Room only. Packed like Sardines in front of the Telly. Tensions and Nerves where hight throughout the Race. When she was headed, there was a sad, dissapointed Mood and then , when she started to fight back, there was screaming and shouting that became a continuous Roar and I still have the Impression that the whole Building shook. One of my 10 most emotional Moments in Racing. Everytime I see the Race, I’m back in that Pub. Thanks for Uploading

Brilliant horses. Brilliant memories. Also one of my personal favourites as well as the bigger names, Von Trappe. First came to my attention a cheltenham non festival race, when he came to a standstill after jumping badly, Dunwoody got him going again, although tailed off, and he caught up, worked his way through the field, flew up the hill, and ended up 2nd. Then went on to win the Coral golden hurdle in March, His jumping issues after that became a bit legendary, but still was great to see him in a Gold cup. I've looked for the footage of the 'standstill' race over the years, but haven't found it.

@@HorseRacingLegends Thanks for that. Up until a few years ago, I'd always remembered the horse that won it, but now some memories come and go. It'll hopefully come back. Decent chaser. It just occurred to me this morning, that what Dawn Run did, will never be repeated. Winning the Champion Hurdle and the Gold Cup, because back then, the gap between Hurdlers and Chasers was much much bigger then today. Nowadays Horses can switch back and forth. That wouldn’t have been possible then

I mentioned earlier I’d read the book on Dessie , one of the funniest comments in the book is when David Ellsworth was talking about Combs Ditch , he said “ he was a complicated horse , he wouldn’t pass a parked car if it was on his right “.. 😅 and if you watch some of his races he DOES tend to be placed in the finish to accommodate that quirk ! 😂 👍🏴

I would never try to diminish the race Dawn Run ran there , it was a unique and astonishing achievement.. but I must’ve been one of the few folk in these British Isles hoarsely cheering on my fancy Wayward Lad, that hill and that last cruel 2f robbed him of his greatest triumph I feel , he was imperious at 3m on a flat track like Kempton on good ground , but take nothing away from the ill fated great mare 🙏 👍🏴

Looking back, all those years and watching this, i cant help feeling that they never got the best out of "Wayward Lad ". He hated being in front. They said he was a doubtful stayer, but i think they just hit the front too early on him. If they had waited with him, until the shadow of the post, they would have won more races, & crucial races . But hey ho, all history now. Lovely to watch, never had much money back then, but swear to God, it was a better time than now.
