For every egged version, we (Indians) have eggless version of that!! So for us this is no big deal😊 Vegetarianism in India has slightly different connotation compared to Western veganism. Veganism is relatively new western import for Indians. In India vegetarianism includes dairy products as you don't have to kill the animal. They don't go into technicalities of fertilised or unfertilised eggs. For most of Indians eggs simply are not vegetarian. There is a new colloquial term that I have heard - Eggetarian - who are basically vegetarians with the exception that they do also eat eggs & egg based preparations. But they don't go beyond that. For us this is nothing complicated.

Actually in India, eggs are considered as non-vegetarian despite being "unfertilized", because there's no sureshot way of knowing which eggs are unfertilized, because even 1 out of 100 possibly unfertilized eggs can hatch if properly incubated. So technically, eggs fall into the gray area between vegetarian and non-vegetarian, kinda like Schrodinger's cat.

Thank you for taking the time to explain that! 🙏
@s.s.86734 ай бұрын
Yes, nowdays eggs sold in market are not fertile but that wasn't always the case. Earlier eggs consumed were fertile before the whole farm industry thing. So, thats why eating eggs was considered killing a potential life. With dairy products it doesn't harm the animal life in any way. Also, we all drink milk as infants is part of our natural diet until and unless you develop lactose intolerance later in life. Plus, cows are sacred in India, often called mother lovingly and India is a heavily agricultural based country so cow products are widely used and accepted. Many religious ceremonies make use of milk products since they are considered sacred. So, thats why it is very common in India to find recipes that are substitute of non veg food. Animal protein is replaced by plant protein and in this case dairy protein. The basic idea is to not to hurt or kill the animal. But if course, it depends on what part of India are we talking about and what religion and what part of religion they are practicing. Shaktism practicing hindus in bengal would offer meat products to gods while Vaishnavism practicing hindus would never in their wildest dreams go anywhere near.

Many people consider egg as non vegetarian even though it may be unfertilised. But milk or milk products which do not cause any harm to the animal is considered vegetarian. Also a weird thing but many house holds do not consume mushrooms because it's not vegetarian even though it's not meat/meat product. It all comes down to different religious beliefs in different regions vs the availability of food in those regions. Its quite interesting really. Going back to the egg topic, if you go to an Indian supermarket and buy a product you'll see a green or a red dot on the packet. It's to indicate the use of any non vegetarian ingredients in the food product. Now they have introduced a yellow dot as well for food that has no non vegetarian ingredients except eggs.

The thing which you need to keep in mind while reacting to Ranveer's videos is that he's making these videos for Indian home cooks and amatures, not professional cooks. Foreign cuisine is even tougher to cook for locals because they don't know the basics of it. Most of the Indians are vegetarians and those who are non vegetarians very few of them cook non veg in their kitchen. So he tries to modify recipes for vegetarians. Second, Ranveer tries to create and teach those fancy recipes we see on the internet, movies and shows that we Indians would be able to cook and eat. Just like you western cooks and cheffs won't even have even 20% of the spices that are found in an average Indian home kitchen, it's natural for us to not have some of your ingredients that are required to cook your cuisines. Those thick bread or cream fresh may not be available in our Homes or even in store in small cities, because no one eats them. So Ranveer tries to create recipes for us, so that we can cook them with available ingredients in our kitchen without going on a literal treasure hunt to find those few Ingredients which can be replaced easily if we sacrifice authenticity.

While i agree that there are a lot of vegetarians in India but you're grossly underestimating the number of non vegetarians in India. I believe you come from a mostly vegetarian state, hence your highly biased outlook but that isn't the case with most parts of the country. Most south Indian and east/Northeast Indian states are majorly composed of a non vegetarian population. A lot of northern states as well. And yeah most of us cook non veg at home because it is not frowned upon here. Maybe you should get out of your state a little and see the country with an unbiased outlook.

Read my comment calmly again you'll realise that I never said india is majorly vegetarian. I said India has a huge population of veg people. And amongst non veg people, most don't cook at home. Ranveer makes video in Hindi. Not for the south Indian ln population so they are out of the question. Ranveer have more nonveg video on his channel then veg. But he also makes video for veg people because veg people are a significant population. So he modifies recipes for veg people and if you've watched his videos (cause I have watched all of his videos) he himself even in most of the non veg recipes tell a way on how to cook them with paneer or in other veg ways. He has a recipie of eggless omlette, or how to cook chila like omlette. I see lot of people already addressed this but for a better understanding: 1. Non-Vegetarian (Marked with a Red Dot on the corner for food packaging) This doesn't necessarily mean someone who eats all meat, rather you eat some form of meat. Depending on religions, regions and cultures, one may or may not consume beef, chicken, lamb, pork, fish, crustacean etc. 2. Vegetrain with egg (often called Eggetarian locally, marked with an Orange Dot on the corner for food packaging): Same classification as vegetarian in western world. 3. Vegetarian (Marked with a Green Dot on the corner for food packaging): Same as a vegetarian except no eggs (as eggs are considered meat by many). There's no restriction on dairy. 4. Vegan (Marked with a green letter V on the corner for food packaging): Same classification as vegan in western world. 5. Jain (No official classification for food packaging, but often marked with a green letter J. Also known as strict vegetarian): This is a complicated one. So no meat, no eggs, dairy is fine, but no root vegetables or fruits. For example, garlic, onion, potato etc are not allowed. An oversimplification, but in short this stems from the Jain faith, where removing complete root for consumption is considered killing the plant, while trimming the tops or extracting fruits is considered ok. 6. Pescetarian (No official classification for food packaging): This is an uncommon category in India but most commonly found in the regions of West Bengal, where from personal experience we've seen people claiming to be vegetarian eat fish (probably because the category pescetarian isn't widely known, athough many still argue that fish isn't meat). Another mythological story I've been told often as a kid, is that a fish had accidentally entered into a god's bowl of elixir during an event where the elixir had to be consumed (but meat consumption wasn't accepted), so it was thus classified as a non-meat to bypass the situation. There are many other people whose beliefs have evolved over time but the above are the most common categories. [FUN FACT]: A major chunk of Hindu's who eat either meat or eggs, will not consume the same on one specific day of the week as either an offering of submission or as an atonement towards a diety. This day can change based on their faith in a specific god, but the most common one is Tuesday.

Quick reason -'Vegetarian' in India doesn't include eggs as compared to western food. Details: western eggs are processed/pasteurised/unfertilized which gives a logic that its not 'meat'/lifeless. Whereas in India, food is still very unprocessed so you cannot differentiate.

This might be a little bit of folk history ish, but the odd number heuristic comes from the old tradition of avoiding a real penalty for accidentally/or intentionally shorting someone so, “throwing in an extra one” in “for good measure” as a sort of a culinary tradition. Hence the “baker’s dozen.” I may be simultaneously pulling something out my ass and putting smoke in it as the same time. People tend to get food in pairs, or singular. 4 people? Make enough for 5 to avoid clap back. Or something like that. What do I know? I do know that don’t know nothing? ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Is French toast meant to be crunchy or soft? On some of the recipes i have read always require an egg, which I think prevents the bread from getting dry as a toast should and somehow I think the moisture seem to retain on the outside and not just the inside.

Hey everyone curious difference between milk and eggs. Domesticated animals produce a lot more milk than wild ones so their calf has enough milk. And then enough milk for human consumption. Eating a egg is ending a life. And unfertilized ones are just menstrual waste that was not intended to consume. Like milk is produced by mamals for consumption but eggs are produced to reproduce. So these are different things.

When he says "we don't have eggs", he means "in this recipe" rather than "in the studio/kitchen". That idea gets across better in Hindi than in the English translated subtitles. This variation of the recipe accommodates for Indian vegetarians - many of whom do not eat eggs.

As many ppl have already written, many Indians don’t eat eggs but would still like to try the things they see on tv so they create an eggless “dupe” as close to recreating the original experience. It won’t taste the same of course. The second thing is sweet eggs just don’t compute for the Indian brain.. we are not used to eggs & sugar. For us, egg is savoury & salty.. with green chilli & spices.. in curries or omelettes. We even have eggless versions of cakes and desserts. Most ppl just don’t like the eggy taste.

I'll be honest, sweet grilled cheese was my reaction to the eggless one. He's enriching the bread basically, and he's making a toasted jam sandwich, but it's not going to be an egg custard. Egg is just the fundamental aspect of a French toast. There might be a vegetarian substitute for eggs that would work in the recipe, but I just don't think cream and plain flour would achieve it. I think it would taste good and I'd be curious to see whether it really hit the note of French toast, but based on the recipe I just wouldn't expect it to quite make it.
