Back in the 70's and 80's this was Philippine Airline's domestic flagship. Riding in one was as thrilling as watching it takeoff and land. When it was pushback time from the gate those engines were started 1 after the other and it made such a beautifully HIDEOUS sound, like a fire-breathing dragon awaken from a long sleep. When you were inside of it it sounded like a big Hoover Vacuum Cleaner being turned on. When it took off it made window panes nearby shake and occasionally break, especially the ones that were not equipped with a Hush Kit. Ahh, I miss that noise coming from a turbojet engine. Since our house was in the flight path of these planes, it never failed to wake me up at 6AM sharp.. It was my alarm clock in the morning. Sometimes boarding was done via the rear stair door and with the APU running, and boy was it also loud. So hearing it again here in this video brought back childhood memories.

BAC 1-11s were the loudest aircraft I've ever encountered taking off. So, those of you who revel at the sound of these RR Spey engines either because it's relaxing, it's cool, it's like a vacuum cleaner, mind you, the 1-11s were extremely deafening to hear on takeoff, from the outside. Nowadays, residents living close to airports would've been greatly annoyed by these twin-engine aircraft. But, I do miss those old silver birds. They had character.

Same with the Tridents, you'd have to stop talking for it to pass but even then you'd sometimes still hear it minutes later.

Not really. But they are more fun and immersive to fly in than today's planes.

Its sad, I flew all the way over to England in 2002 and for about $60 or so USD I got a 40 minute ride on a European Air Charter BAC 111-500. This here flight on this smaller BAC 111-400 series cost over $800!!!!! Someone was mighty greedy!!!

I find the flights in the UK cheaper than the US, how was your experience?
@gerardmoran9560 Жыл бұрын
They didn't use full flaps for landing. The 111 had some impressive deflection when full flaps were selected. We often did partial flap landings in the 737-200 when you had a long dry runway.

Remember going to Majorca in the early 80's on one of these, was frightening when they landed, the whole plane shuddered to slow down for some reason

Normal, American Airlines stewards referred to it as the "Kamikaze". High takeoff/landing speeds.

I was extremely fortunate enough to have a flight on one of these, British World Airlines from Gatwick to Verona in 1998, just before they were taken out of service in UK. I sat in the same place as on this video right by the engine. The engines really do sound this amazing! For you flight simmers out there download David Maltby's BAC 1-11 www.dmflightsim.co.uk/ but download the sound package too. It really is fantastic.
