My mom says during Lent people give up things like sugar, and meats and sharing habichuelas con dulce was to share a little something that, back then, didn't require much sugar, (because of leche de vaca) and was made over carbón, so the flavor signature was a bit different. "En el campo, alguien siempre tenía un dulce hirviendo durante el día, y uno le llevaba carbón en una cantinita para que se cocinara bien. En la tarde, nos traían la cantina con dulce." It's just, a thing. I'm forever grateful for it. Thank you for doing this.

Omgggg seeing the both of you guys in the kitchen is so refreshing and beautiful especially during this time of year. I lossed my mom at the age of 19, I am now 40 so seeing the dynamic beautiful relationship between the two of you really brings me back to those beautiful days when my mother had me in the kitchen teaching me how to cook. Great video chef Zee. My husband is Domonican and his mom makes the habichuelas con dulce without the cloves... they do not like them. My mother in law also thinks I put too much evaoparated milk in the batch I made. I haven't tried it with the sweet condensed milk though... next time I will. Do you think you can add a recipe for Puré de yuca gratinado con queso mozzarella y parmesano. My husband really likes it... we have had it from Chef Pepper :)
