The four hour epic 1970 FA Cup Final between Leeds and Chelsea still defines modern football for me. It is very sad to reflect today on how many of the participants in that remarkable confrontation have gone away from us: Dave Sexton, Peter Bonetti, Peter Houseman, Peter Osgood and Ian Hutchinson for Chelsea, and Don Revie, Gary Sprake, Paul Madeley, Billy Bremner and Norman Hunter for Leeds.

I was an 8 year old praying for a draw in the Final at Wembley (there hadn't been one since 1912 !), cos the FA had announced any possible Replay would be at Old T. My Dad got tickets by virtue of our Man United Season Tickets …. still have my ticket for the Replay which cost 80/- (that's 80 shillings = 4 quid !!). I remember Peter Bonetti's injury was a factor in Mick Jones' goal. What a fabulous atmosphere that night - sends shivers thinking about it !

I was six. We'd migrated about 18 months previously from Canada, and Chelsea was the first place we lived in in England. So I became a Chelsea fan.

@@50milliondownthedraintonym16 they only met like with like on the day. Chelsea were a team known for their skill and flair. Leeds were team known for their cynicism and brutality .

Bonetti played a blinder in this match. Pity he didn’t play to the same level in the World Cup ¼ final v West Germany in Mexico 7 weeks later when his poor goalkeeping cost a potentially World Cup winning England team, who had already given Brazil plenty of problems in a group stage match, a semi-final place v Italy. He must have frozen in the heat. RIP.
