I make my first porcupine roach and take you along with me, while providing basic instructions.
DISCLAIMER 1: I had no prior experience of roach construction, nor do I have friends or family that have experience with roach construction. I conducted hours of research to find information from several Native sources to learn every detail of roach construction. If anything in this video was done “wrong,” or if you have better solutions, ANY AND ALL ADVICE IS WELCOME IN THE COMMENT SECTION for myself and future viewers to learn from. Chi miigwech!!
DISCLAIMER FOR NON-NATIVES: My non-Native audience is welcome to watch this video for entertainment. However, the instructions in this video are meant solely for Indigenous peoples to recreate. Porcupine roaches hold significant meaning to Indigenous people who use them. Do not recreate a porcupine roach if you are non-Native, even if done so “respectfully”, and especially if done so for a costume. It is 100% NOT OKAY NO MATTER WHAT.

Hey I’m a roach maker from Oklahoma and I love to share knowledge myself, so just saying Heat helps out a lot when shaping it (that’s what your doing when you wet it), wet the whole thing the wrap, and roach and put it in the oven at about 430 degrees and let it cook in there for a few mins 30-45 (while it’s wet wrap the roach then put it in) then let it cool for a few mins 10-15, or you can skip all of that and just put hair spray in it then wrap it up lol it does the same thing, and don’t worry the dye doesn’t really come off onto the other deer tail, if it does it’s so faint you can’t see it.

Is that accurate? Really in the oven at 430🤔?

Great job! I’m a roach maker from NM, here some tips, when sorting hair do a rough sort 1st as I’m sort everything at 1 inch than go back to each bundle and fine sort it, when tying soak the roots in water for about 5 mins than tie it, makes it easier to fold and can put more hair into a bundle, and when tying use a wax sinew or dental floss, both work the same and if you’re tying 2 rows of hair it’s better to have a measurement template that way you can have the exact measurements on both rows and it’ll line up better

The 2 nails are for 2 cord lines to match up the second row for the crown. It is easier to get them the same length. You're right, working from one side to the other is easier. If you have any questions feel free to reach out to me. I've been make them for 8 yrs.

I got my roach made for me, it cost me $1000 USD which I didn't mind paying because its a lot of work. I also gave the roach maker tobacco as a thank you. :)

Also, soaking the hairs in warm water helps soften the porky roots and it sits better over the cord when tying.

Yup same thing with Arrow veins. Soak the feathers in warm water before attaching and they sit better on the shaft.

( full blood native) quick question, if I make one of these could I wear it to school with casual clothes, or do I need full regalia and such? Don’t know to much of our culture cause I’m adopted
@jonanderson4474
@jonanderson4474 9 ай бұрын
Two years late but from another full blood native that was adopted. I'm sure some would say no but I say it's our peoples' way of dress. Do it up. Do what you think is fine. Nobody will stop dudes wearing a dress. How do they have room to say you can't wear a roach? Anyone with a problem. Just tell em it's your way. Nobody can tell you how to pray. So they can't tell you how to be. Some say be afraid of owls. Some say they're revered. Wouldn't mind your thoughts about this. Seeing as it's been quite some time since you asked. Do you think it'd be alright to wear one in a casual setting?

I'm with Kyle on this one. I'm Lakota, and it really grinds my gears when other indigenous folk feel the need to gatekeep like this. If an indigenous Hawaiian or a Powhatan makes a roach that would be easily as far removed from their ancestral background and culture as a Russian doing the same. Telling people they aren't allowed to participate in something because of their race is racist, I can't believe this is a controversial statement.

It doesn't matter....the more roach makers the better. It guarantees that important cultural knowledge and arts survive time. Besides the more people that want to support these artists by buying and wearing the art, the better reservation life and issues will get. Let's think big. What happens if the entire world celebrates by wearing a roach one day? That's one world wide powpow! If we ever achieve mutual cultural appreciation, I think we will have peace ✌️ 😌
