I truly hate chemistry for this exact reason. No single rule. A lot of exceptions that confuse the shit out of me. I think chemistry should be taught in the language of quantum mechanics so we can actually understand why they behave in such a way. You, Sir, saved so much of my time and energy and sigfinicantly reduced the amount of glucocorticoids that could have potentially been secreted by my body.

Uhh I have a doubt sir, We say that Nitro is Sp2 when it's lone pair are in resonance. Okay I get it. And we say that the lone pair is in unhybridised P orbital. But how? N has five electrons. 2 in S orbital , 3 in p orbitals (1 in each). When the Nitrogen is SP2 hybridised then s orbital and P orbital(except one) are mixed and each can form one sigma bond. BUT how did that P unhybridised orbital gets 2electrons. If Only S had 2.
@ChemComplete
@ChemComplete 3 жыл бұрын
Nitrogen has 5 valence electrons. To be sp2, you make 3 hybrid orbitals, each containing one electron. The remaining 2 electrons (for a total of 5) are left in a p-orbital to participate in resonance (pi and nonbonding electron delocalization).

What if the atom (ex. N) with the lone pair is in a ring with one bond being a double bond and the other bond being one place away from a double bond? Would that make the lone pairs sp2 or part of the p-orbital?

Hey you really cleared most of my doubts. Just one thing to ask, if we have an anion in which lone pairs is in sp3 orbitals and another anion having in sp or sp2 then which one would be more stable anion?
@ChemComplete
@ChemComplete 4 жыл бұрын
What a great question! Anions are excess negative charge and in general are better supported by lower sp hybrids. So sp is more beneficial than sp2. The reason behind this is that sp is 50% s and 50% p in nature while sp2 is 33.3% s and 66.7% p. The more s nature a hybrid has, the closer the anion is to the nucleus, and the more stable the anion.

I hope you can answer a question for me as you are skilled in your wording of these concepts. Using oxygen as an example, if the octet rule refers to eight electrons in the valance shell of an atom, then oxygen would have minus 2 charge on it since it only has six valence electrons. There has to be a better way of wording the octet rule as it applies to the valence electrons surrounding an atom.

Unless the p orbital is already occupied as in pyridine, in which case the lone pair can't participate in resonance and must be part of the hybridized orbitals, right?

Carbocations are almost always exclusively sp2 hybrids. Carbanions can vary as they contain pairs similar to the nitrogen and oxygen examples. In the case of carbanions it follows the same rule discussed here...can it partake in resonance and add stability (aromaticity).
