Richtig tolles Video!

Great video and how I first found your channel. I'm wondering, is there a good way to make the chemical structure look embossed/engraved onto another surface? What I have in mind is having a chemical structure embossed on a surface like a heireoglyph. Sorry, I'm a chemist, not a 3D artist, so I don't know what function or feature to even search for to figure this out.

I made and extensive online course on that (Blender for Chemists and Blender for Biochemist), however they are not freely available. But if you would like to check them out anyways, you can go to the link in my channel description.

Insted of tracing bitmap with inkscape you can directly save as scalable vector graphics from chemdraw....
@LuminousLab2 жыл бұрын
True, but that does not work with all versions of ChemDraw. For example, in older versions the atom-letters are not converted to svg and do not show in Blender.

I really love your videos! I'm a beginner at all the programs mentioned in the video. I tried to follow along but some issues occurred. I used the free online version of ChemDraw to draw the molecule, copied and posted it to Adobe illustrator. It looked fine and I saved it as .svg. However, when I imported it to Blender, only the lines appeared but not the text (eg, "NH2", "OH"). How could that happen?
@LuminousLab2 жыл бұрын
Happy to hear that they are useful! I think I know what happend: If you copy it to Illustrator, you need to expand the text objects first (Object>expand). Then you can save it as a svg and import everything into Blender. As soon as the text is converted, it should show up correctly in Blender.

@@LuminousLab Thank you so much for the response! It solved the problem. The text showed up in Blender. I was able to complete the whole tutorial but with a bit more complication. Somehow after importing the .svg file to Blender, every single line is recognized as one individual curve and the whole molecule is recognized as a collection of curves. Therefore, in order to style the molecule, instead of selecting the whole molecule and setting the extrude or color one time, I have to select every line individually and change the setting one by one for like 20 times. Are there ways to combine different curves into one big curve so their settings can be changed all at once?

@@xingchenliu66 That indeed sounds hard to handle. I made an updated video-tutorial for that (kzbin.info/www/bejne/nGXcfox4a6aAg6M). In principle, it is the same overall workflow (just for a newer version of Blender). The part that might provide a solution starts at 04:00. In short: You can convert the path into a mesh and then join it and go from there.

Very well made and informative video tutorial! This is a nice channel, I hope you keep on producing such quality videos. I've lately been interested in exploiting PowerPoint's recent 3D capabilities to explore and showcase molecules in 3D, and have prepared a few videos and tutorials about it (if it's of any interest, you can just see my channel). My latest video is about preparing 3D structures like the ones here and to manipulate them in PowerPoint. Thanks to you, I was finally able to finish the new video and tutorial. One of my main interests is to show how it can be done using free software, so many thanks for pointing out Inkscape as I had been looking for a while for a recommendable free and easy-to-use multi-platform software for doing the png-to-svg conversion. Your suggestion allowed me to finish my latest demo video. I'll be looking forward to your next video!

Hi, what's the name of the app of the converting image to SVG?

The one used here is Inkscape (inkscape.org). You can also use Adobe Illustrator or CorelDraw.

How do you actually save the creation as a high-quality image? Thank you in advance
@LuminousLab4 жыл бұрын
In the top menu go to "Render" and select "Render Image". The rendering process might take some time, when it is finished you can save the image in your desired file format.

PerkinElmer sells ChemDraw for all common operating systems, it is quite pricy though. If you are a student (or teacher), it is cheaper. Also check if your University provides it for you.
