Sometimes it’s nice to step back and enjoy the beautiful aspects of science! These chemical precipitation reactions are extremely useful but are also just beautiful chemistry! Precipitation reactions are a type of double replacement reaction in which two ionic compounds sort of switch partners with one another to create two new compounds, one of which being insoluble. The insoluble solid compound precipitates from the solution as a solid. The solid can then be collected, filtered, dried and used for other reactions. I have always found precipitations reactions to be some of the most beautiful solution chemistry to watch and it certainly makes for a good video! I hope you enjoy, too! Thanks for watching!

@@tenkarapondfishing4611 The last demonstration he did (the one with the chartreuse precipitate) is wrong. He implies that thiocyanate is insoluble when it is in fact very soluble. It could not have created that precipitate. Hope this helps, Peace and Love. :)

Hey Science Pirate, been watching your vids and really enjoy them! In this one, I just wanted to mention in particular the lead nitrate + potassium iodide reaction -- we did this experiment in my high school chemistry course way back when, but we used ammonium iodide instead of potassium iodide. I assume this means lead nitrate + any iodide salt will create the lead iodide precipitate (it's a beautiful shade of yellow, isn't it?) Also, may I suggest doing a vid on copper (II) sulfate? It's one of my favorite chemicals because of the awesome blue color it is. I know there's experiments that involve making crystals of it, but I can't think of how it works off the top of my head.

Yes! Any iodide salt will react with lead nitrate to form lead iodide!! I do love copper sulfate, also, and have been pondering a few ideas with it lately… stay tuned! And thanks for the suggestion!

So all precipitation reactions are of the double displacement variety, but do all double displacement reactions generate a precipitate? Just curious... Cool channel, btw!

Thanks for the amazing video. What is the strength of each solution? 1 molar or does it really matter what the strength is. I saw you measuring the chemicals. Thanks you again!
@TheSciencePirate
@TheSciencePirate 2 жыл бұрын
Yes the amounts are somewhat important, but not critical. As long as you get enough of each reactant into the solution, you will experience the precipitation. If memory serves me correctly, I made 0.1M solutions for this video.

I had a weird thing happen. I had some lead sulfate in excess sulphuric acid to make it slightly acidic. So I thought I could add naOH+h20 which would precipitate lead metal. Instead, I have a lightly basic mixture of light yellow clear liquid. I'm trying to get the actual lead metal to precipitate out. But it seems to have formed some kind of Na(PbOH) complex which I don't know how to break. Help?!!!
