That was great!! In using a new textbook and teaching chem for the first time I couldn't remember the simple difference between the two types of compounds. This made it very clear where our text is very confusing! Thank you.

Thank you so much from both me and my wife. I've been spending the last several days trying to find good information that a dunce like me can understand. My instructor speaks broken English and having issues following along. This video along with one of your other videos were exactly what was needed to learn how to identify ionic fixed, variable and molecular compounds.

So LiBeNaMg or something like that would be ionic? As long as theres a metal its ionic and all nonmetals then its molecular?
@GetChemistryHelp4 жыл бұрын
Technically, your hypothetical compound is made up entirely of metals so it would use metallic bonding rather than ionic bonding, meaning it is neither an ionic nor molecular compound. The best classification is probably as an alloy, but that's outside the scope of this lesson.

Thanks that helped me a lot :D but what about Ge (Germanium)? it is listed with semimetal elements and you have shown us that molecular compounds include nonmetals and semimetals. but in the video you mark it with the Ionic compounds.
@GetChemistryHelp11 жыл бұрын
Semimetals can be named as either molecular or ionic compounds. For example, you could name GeCl4 as germanium(IV) chloride or germanium tetrachloride. Hope that helps!
@FatalityMiami11 жыл бұрын
GetChemistryHelp so to classify a compounds with semimetals we should look at the second element and it will tell us if its ionic or molecular?
@GetChemistryHelp11 жыл бұрын
No, if there is a semimetal you can simply choose how you want to name the compound. Both options (ionic or molecular) are correct in this case.
This helped sooooo much. Thank you for your help!!!! (:

Save ya some time - if it has any metals its ionic if it doesn't have any metals at all its molecular
@GetChemistryHelp5 жыл бұрын
Actually, there are ionic compounds without metals, such as those with the ammonium ion. Better to say if the compound contains metals or polyatomic ions, then it's ionic. If it contains nonmetals, it's molecular.
