I think the fun of doing dip-dye into multiple colors is the variation you get and the fact that it won't be "perfect". Hand dyed yarn is so variable anyway that the "imperfection" is part of the art form. You've got sections of primary and mixed colors in the yarn, which I'd say makes it a wonderful success! If you want specific shades of the blends, definitely mix those colors and apply in a different way, but there's definitely something special about this colorway being done in the method that it was.

Really pretty 🌈. As far as color transfer... I'm lucky enough to have a steamer basket and lid that fit into my full size catering pan, so I would be able to lay the yarn out almost full length where the colors don't touch each other. Probably not worth the investment for a one-off project. Just thought it was worth mentioning for anyone who wants to be able to use a technique like this on a regular basis.

This is something I 100% want to buy - the main thing keeping me is SPACE. I'm overflowing all over the house already. I'm really dreaming of a studio but we don't have space to convert something for me (without building on an addition... sigh) and I cannot afford to rent someplace. Maybe someday.

@@ChemKnitsTutorials totally understand about the storage issues--I live in a very small space overrun by craft supplies. If you need enabling, though, I will whisper in your ear "but Rebecca, they all stack one inside the other and require no additional storage space" 🤫

I absolutely love this rainbow! It might be easier to hand paint with the premixed colors, but the random blending is what makes it so beautiful to me. Maybe it would be easier to distribute the 3 main colors on a longer skein? I'm so gonna try this out. I was drooling over the yarn mop too. When you put it all the way in I was like 'Noooooo, leave the beatuiful blue! It's mermaids hair!' lol

Soo pretty. You should dip the yarn up to halfway in each color. No further. The trick, as you say, is figuring out where the thirds are.
@ChemKnitsTutorials
@ChemKnitsTutorials 3 жыл бұрын
I'm super excited to try this on a longer skein of yarn so I have more room for error. I think my biggest issue here is that I wanted to do about a third each color... but I also wanted regions for the overlap. So I need to calculate that ratio a bit better. Maybe I want to dip each one over 2/3? No that's too much... I'll do some math next time. Lol.
@mm9374
@mm9374 3 жыл бұрын
@@ChemKnitsTutorials you will have six colors on the skein when you are done. Each color you use, for instance yellow, will be in three of the final colors- orange, yellow, and green. Three/ six= 1/2, so for each of the primary colors you have to dip 1/2 of the skein, turning one third of the way for each new color. Maybe tie a little bow of acrylic yarn on one strand halfway up the skein to make it easier to judge, then take it off and move it for the next dip?

⭐ You brighten our lives with your experiments, thank you 🌈 When I don't want colour transfer, I use small freezer bags to hold different colours. Gorgeous colour. 🦘👍 I have seen some dyer presenting their yarns for sale not wound up at all. Giving customers the opportunity to see the full range of colours in a skein. I don't think I would go to that extreme, but I have considered using a tag, rather than a skein band. So many things to consider, when dyeing in bigger quantities 🤔🤷‍♂️ and preparing them for sale.
@ChemKnitsTutorials
@ChemKnitsTutorials 3 жыл бұрын
This is a big reason I use hang tags, so that I can reopen and photography for someone if I needed to. (Plus, ball bands can get crushed easily and rip and I've had reasonable luck with the hang tags.) I might change to get custom tags going forward, though. :D Maybe someday when I have time again with the kids at school. I always take a photo of my skeins opened up for my listings. (Well, probably 99% of the time) because I think it really helps someone understand how the yarn could knit up.

I need to think of a good - reusable way to do this, maybe getting some of those silicone sheets could help since I could lay it between the fibers.... then I could wash and reuse. (I"m not opposed to using plastic wrap when I need to... but I try to avoid waste as much as I can)

I think the transfer comes from when you squeeze out the excess water.
@ChemKnitsTutorials
@ChemKnitsTutorials 3 жыл бұрын
I don't think so, although this is a possibility for sure. But I think that since I'm squeezing, any transfer of dye would get more spread out versus in tiny pin points... but this is more likely than tongs transfer so it is a possibility for sure! (So while I don't think that is when it happened, I should keep an eye out for this.)

there are steamer pans for the catering pans, if you could spread the yarn out that might help the transfer
@ChemKnitsTutorials
@ChemKnitsTutorials 3 жыл бұрын
YES! I have had this on my list to buy for a while. The big issue is space. My dye pans are often all over available surfaces drying (versus being neatly stacked in the shed - I don't want to introduce more moisture in there so I only put things "away" that are dry.... which means a lot of stuff is never quite put away. *sigh*)

@ChemKnitsTutorials
@ChemKnitsTutorials 3 жыл бұрын
I don't think so, but it IS something that could happen. I think it was more likely to happen from the yarn laying across another portion in the steamer basket (right before steaming.) If there were colors on the tongs it would be a larger splotch... at least I think! and yay!!
