I like all of them but the results of steaming are dramatic. Would love to see grey, blues greens and orange! I learn so much from your videos. It has encouraged me to start playing with dyes again . I’ve been experimenting with dying small skeins of natural grey, and of white yarns under the same conditions. Interesting and surprising results.

I really enjoyed this experiment as it compared a number of elements all at one time. It told me that for the look that I like to go for, I would presoak with vinegar and I would steam the yarn. I am always trying to keep all of these variables straight when I am dying but this video did that for me in a very clear way. I liked the vibrant look of skein three. That said, I have enjoyed all of your videos immensely. They have started me on a yarn dying journey that won’t end anytime soon.

Of course! The sponsor actually has all three of the experimental skeins so it is up to them if they share what is made from it. However, I plan to play with this technique more in the future!

Out of these specific yarns, I'm loving the steam-set one the best. The colors are SO vibrant and happy, it just feels like a very exciting yarn! I think for the dip-set yarns, I would adore a blue and blue adjacent (green, purple, or both?) colorway because the gentle background color and pops of speckles is such a cool look. It'd also be fun to experiment with two contrasting colors rather than the mix of three primaries, though going off of what was said in the previous video, doing a CYM colorway would probably be super interesting. I think given how similar the "feeling" of the dip-set yarns were to the "recreate a yarn mop" ones, it's probably better to stick with this technique if you want to play around with color choices.

Thanks so much for the video:) I think the specific dyes you used made a difference as well. Dharma #402 is acid red 266 I believe. I have slightly hard well water & it can be a pain to get it to level in mixes. I always try to neutralize the calcium so that I don't damage the fibers. However, unless the water is HOT & constantly mixed, it clumps the moment it touches the acidic water.

Hi Rebecca, I'm a new knitter, but I have been an oil painter for many years and I also have dyed fabric for art quilts, so I have some experience with color theory and such. Now since watching you work I'm inspired to dye some yarn! Thank you for being so generous with your knowledge. I have an idea in my mind for a heathered gray yarn with color speckles in it, some magenta, blue & maybe a little green. So, should I start with a yarn that is already gray and just speckle it? Or should I use a two-step process and dye it the gray I want then speckle? I'm going to use a knit picks merino wool, but not sure which one, I want to make a shawl or poncho with the yarn. I kind of prefer the "muddier" yarn from this video, I like those subdued & muted colors. Any advice would be appreciated!

Wonderful video! You are a treasure trove of 411! I'm trying to add speckles to an acrylic yarn, can you steam set acrylic without worrying about melting?
@ChemKnitsTutorials4 жыл бұрын
Unfortunately I haven't been able to dye acrylic yarn without having some melting. I think that steam setting is less damaging than doing immersion dyeing, but there was still some flattening of the fibers.
@wipperzz4 жыл бұрын
@@ChemKnitsTutorials Yeah, I tried steam setting (acid dye used, I got my hand slapped for that, whoops!) and while the dye took, the yarn was def damaged. I watched your RIT Dyemore Synthetic (speckles on acrylic) video, I think I'll try steaming in a Ziploc for 30 mins and check for damage and check again in 10 min increments as long as the yarn looks undamaged. Would it be possible to dye the yarn using flower petals?? I saw a video where you dyed yarn using food and i would love to se you try and use petals!
@ChemKnitsTutorials4 жыл бұрын
I think it would depend on the type of flower. Some have pigments that are stable - I've done dandelions before. Other pigments come more from roots and leaves from plants. natural dyeing is still new to me and I'd love to explore more.

This was absolutely brilliant! I learned so much and love that you do not use Saran style plastic with microwave ( environmental nightmare) . I really like all of them very much but number 1 is my fave then number 2 and the mop equally. Number 3 is a perfect speckled skein but for me, the colors are too “primary” ( not a fan of those intense bright colours) it is what I have always thought of as speckled yarn though. It is amazing to me how you just used 3 colors to get such rich variety in shades. I have Greener Shades brand acid dyes, it would be nice to see a dye video using these, I have not come across one yet, do you use them? Thank you so much 🙏😊

What about dying with nontoxic, edible dye such as food color and Koolaid❓ How is the lightfastness with them❓ What about using Alum for a mordant❓ Does that help❤🧡💛💚💙💜
@ChemKnitsTutorials4 жыл бұрын
You don't need Alum for food coloring or acid dyes. Food coloring has a mechanism similar to the acid dyes I used in this video. Food coloring can last a while, but it is more prone to fading in direct sunlight than most commercial dyes. I have items that are 10+ years old dyed with food coloring that I wear often, so it can be very nice. I just wouldn't let anything dry in direct sunlight.
