I just received the yarn. It was so much fun watching the video of how it was done. Never would of thought of doing it in a bucket. The yellow yarn will go great with my red hair. I love the fine speckles. They are perfect. Love it so much. Thank you Rebecca. You are awesome!

Thank you for this viedeo!! Question: I am new to dyeing and maybe this was a "light bulb moment".....does the amount of water, not matter, only the percentage of dye powder to the amount of wool that will absorb the dye????? I assumed the volume of water would impact the color. If this is true, this is a huge learning step for me 😊😊 and so helpful!!!
@ChemKnitsTutorials
@ChemKnitsTutorials 3 жыл бұрын
Water volume with acid dyes matters for how the dye covers the yarn (i.e how tonal vs semi-solid it is.) but otherwise it is the total amount of dye that matters the most. If I had set this up in a 15 gallon bucket the results would have been very similar.

I love that you dyed yellow. I’m a yellow fan but a buttery yellow as apposed to neon yellow. I often wonder how dyers get yellow on multi color skeins without the other colors bleeding into it. Lots of fun!

Wow I’m early!!! Good morning, Rebecca!!! This looks like fun!!! I don’t know if I will ever make a sweater(especially a fingering weight one) but it’s cool to see how to dye enough yarn for one lol 😂 That Brilliant Yellow is beautiful 🤩 The speckles are very pretty too. I wonder what Purple Pop and Frozen would look like speckled on this Brilliant Yellow??? Would the speckles turn out green since the over dye is yellow?? Happy Dying!!! Lots of love from Ontario Canada ❤️🇨🇦

I have a 100% silk queen-size duvet cover that is off-white. I would like to dye it, but want even coverage. Do you recommend I dye it in a large garbage can using this technique?
@ChemKnitsTutorials
@ChemKnitsTutorials 3 жыл бұрын
That may work. Silk absorbs color slower than other fiber types so you could get more even coverage. I'm not quite sure how to heat set it after the dyeing on something so large, though.

Every time you mention that your tap water is a bit acidic, I start to wonder if you could make the water more neutral or even basic (add baking soda?) to make breaking colours easier or more spectacular? I kinda want to try it. (Then again, my tap water is already basic, so...)
@ChemKnitsTutorials
@ChemKnitsTutorials 3 жыл бұрын
You could, but it could be more trouble than it is worth. I would be more likely to start with distilled water if I wanted something a bit more neutral.

So I remembered the highlighter dyeing episode the other day and was wondering if you'd tried dyeing with a marker insert inside a skein/cake? Would that even be doable?
@ChemKnitsTutorials
@ChemKnitsTutorials 3 жыл бұрын
It would be doable, but one challenge is that the pigment doesn't come out of the sides of the tube, and I really did have to inject the alcohol into it to open them up (or if I remember correctly cut them open entirely.)

Hi , I am really enjoying you channel. Could you heat the yarn in a crockpot?
@ChemKnitsTutorials
@ChemKnitsTutorials 3 жыл бұрын
Yes you can! If you're going to use acid dyes or other commercial dyes, you want to have a crock pot that is dedicated for dyeing yarn that you don't also use for the preparation of food.

So I was wondering, if you want a 1% dye and use 1g dye, 100g yarn but a varied amount of water will you still have a 1% depth of shade?
@SparkyJoon
@SparkyJoon 3 жыл бұрын
In theory- yes. If you have a large amount of water and can stir the yarn easily and frequently it will be the most even “equal” color throughout the yarn. If you use a smaller amount of water it makes it more difficult for the dye to disperse evenly through the yarn, so you would get a more tonal (light/dark variegated) look to the yarn.
@ChemKnitsTutorials
@ChemKnitsTutorials 3 жыл бұрын
I think it can be confusion because a 1% stock has no relation at all to the 1% depth of shade. The dye stock % is a concentration (how many grams dye / 100 mL liquid) and the Depth of Shade is a % grams dye/100 g yarn. So if you had a 0.25% stock solution (1 g dye in 400 mL water) you could still dye a 1% DOS on yarn, you would just need all 400 mL of your stock. If you start with a 1% stock, but you vary the amount of stock you use. (Eg. 50 mL, 100 mL, 150 mL) then since you have different amounts of dye you would get different colors. If you dissolve 1 gram of dye into any volume of water and use all of it, that is equivalent to measuring out 100 mL of a 1% stock solution. I hope this helps!
