Alpaca farmer here! Alpaca is naturally water repellent, so that’s why it needed a longer soak, and I’m guessing that’s also why there is more spread of the dry powdered dye! I don’t know what chemicals they use to make it “superwash,” but the alpaca still seems to be water repellent. Also, alpacas have no lanolin or oils, but they sure do love their dirt baths! So if you (or anyone reading this) ever get a raw alpaca fleece, it definitely could use a wash, but it doesn’t need scouring! 😀 Thanks so much for your videos! You’re so fun to watch and learn from!

THank you for this information! I didn't think Alpacas had lanolin but I wasn't sure if they were oilier or what. :D Keith bought me some alpaca fiber from a farm many years ago and then we went back years later and found one of the alpacas whose fiber went into my hat. :D

Oooh I love Alpacas 🦙 they’re gorgeous creatures. I have some alpaca yarn, I haven’t used it yet, since I haven’t decided what I want to make with it. Maybe some lovely striped fingerless gloves. (The colors I have are a chocolate brown and a beige)

The alpaca ones make me think of Monet's Waterlilies painting. The Ziploc bags...if you hit me with a mallet, I think some part of me would leak too, LOL!
@ChemKnitsTutorials3 жыл бұрын
hehe! The mallet is a video I just finished filming with the kids. I was prepared to wash the bags to reuse and then I remembered the leaks!

very excited to see this video! My mother in law has a wool allergy but loves alpaca so I had purchased this yarn to make her a pair of socks for Christmas but I was the tiniest bit nervous because I haven't heard anybody talking about it. Can't wait to dye it into a tonal for her now :)
@ChemKnitsTutorials3 жыл бұрын
YAY! This yarn base would be PERFECT for a tonal colorway. It dyed up so nicely!

That's such a difference! Thanks for doing this great comparison video. I have a lot of alpaca and I didn't realize it dyes up so different than superwash merino. I love the colours you used :-)
@ChemKnitsTutorials3 жыл бұрын
You are so welcome! Non-superwash alpaca dyes up a lot different, I think things strike faster to the superwash version but I was very surprised with how different these looked in the end!

I absolutely love alpaca, so soft & luxurious (& NO itch!!! I sometimes react)..... Nice to hear there's now a superwash alpaca.... But for vibrancy I kinda like the stroll better, I like random speckles... I think this colorway would look amazing with some foresty green on the alpaca.... would add some moodiness.
@ChemKnitsTutorials3 жыл бұрын
I think that I could get something more like the stroll on the alpaca... but it would take some work to keep the speckles sharper.

Thank you! I want to see if I can do sharper speckles on the countertop sometime.

Every time I use eco Superwash it spreads more than gives me sharp speckles! If you can get there, I’d be so eager to see the process. If anyone can do it, you can! 💖
@leahgroess53613 жыл бұрын
What an amazing colorway! I love every single color you used, and they combined beautifully. The difference between the two yarn types is astounding, the speckles on the stroll look really neat but the dreamy color spread of the alpaca is just gorgeous. I'm definitely looking forward to seeing what else you do with this yarn, it seems like it calls for a different mindset because the dye strikes so differently.

Love your work! Great thought. Have you ever tried using color or vinegar In a spray bottle. Or use the powder dye then spray the vinegar on it. I think it would be fun and amazing! Hope to hear back soon! Keep being awesome 👌

I have sprayed vinegar on before, but I don't think on top of powder. this is an interesting idea!

Love the results, Rebecca! Am wondering if the colors would be more intense with an alpaca and wool combination, rather than alpaca and nylon? It would be interesting to see the difference, if possible.
@ChemKnitsTutorials3 жыл бұрын
Likely it would be brighter with alpaca + wool, although nylon dyes up SUPER vibrantly so I don't think that was a big issue.

From my research, trying to find brightly dyed alpaca roving/top...Alpaca is harder to dye brightly than sheeps wool or other protein fibers. It requires more dye, more acid and way longer soaking time as well as time to exhaust the dye. I'm just a newbie in love with alpaca, but that is my understanding.
@ChemKnitsTutorials3 жыл бұрын
This is accurate from my experience, too.
@TIDoubleGuhEr3 жыл бұрын
@@ChemKnitsTutorials I'd love to see a tutorial on how to dye the roving/top brightly, if you're up to it? Perhaps citric acid, instead of vinegar is more necessary 🤷♀️. To actually see what is required to accomplish a great, brightly dyed alpaca.

Thank you for the video. I do have a question. I have seen a dyer use an alpaca/nylon blend and get a very strong black tonal with a very clear color (not sure how to describe it). I loved the definition that he got with the alpaca blend and was looking at it to maybe try dying myself, but do you think it would take a lot to get that deep dark true-color with an even tone? Maybe it's the difference of the superwash? The one I saw I don't think it was superwash. Hope this makes sense. Thank you for all you do to guide us. I really like your videos.
@ChemKnitsTutorials3 жыл бұрын
By clear color do you mean it didn't feel a little washed out? I think that the best way do to do this would be to dye the yarn and then overdye if the color doesn't feel deep enough. I plan to do a side by side at different depths of shade to see if the alpaca blend feels less vibrant overall in a few different situations.

I am 100% more a fan of the eco superwash results than the Stroll. I love how the black muted the blues and made them dustier.
