I think the best season to take the ride is during or after the rainy season, the scenery changes a lot! I experienced it back when there was no chepe express and you were allowed to stand between the train cars which didn’t even had windows plus they had a longer stop in divisadero for pictures or buying a gordita. I loved it back then. Also the route back then went all the way to Chihuahua city.

🇺🇸 Ok amigos let's get one thing straight. You know I'm not one of these people to sit there and pretend things are perfect on KZbin for views. I don't give a shit. I've only a few months left of doing this. There is no way on EARTH that I am going to sit there, put on an Oscar performance and pretend I had a great time. I mean no bad feeling at all towards Chepe Express or its employees, I simply wanted to give you an honest review and PROVIDE OTHER OPTIONS which are highlighted in the video to avoid YOU having to spend $150USD on something that (in my opinion) is not worth that price, particularly during the last few years when so many of us are not in a great place with our finances (including me! Especially after this!). Three things I hope Chepe will improve - - Cleaning - Quality of food - Customer Service These three points are integral elements of the offer. I think if these had been better, I wouldn't have been such a Karen in Walmart. Of course, the views can't be helped and as mentioned, a better option may be stop off at each location Next up LOS MOCHIS! A continuación LOS MOCHIS!

Now $40 is the price I would expect to pay! It's funny, I checked the video I did in Serbia last year of a tourist mountain train line (admittedly very different and only about 3 hours), the total ticket price was less than the cost of the Chepe burger! LOL

Hey David, so just wanted to provide some context to what you experienced on the train. El Chepe is owned and operated by Ferromex, one of the largest rail companies in Mexico, but other than this line, everything else they operate is freight. Contrary to what one of the other comments on here says, all the rail industry in Mexico is privatized. Prior to the late 1990s, Mexico's rail system was all nationalized and had a massive passenger network that connected the entire country and had first class, second class, sleepers, pullman coaches, etc. This was essentially all lost after privatization. The funny thing, though, is literally all the equipment on the Chepe is inherited from the previous National Railways of Mexico. These are coaches from the 1940s-1980s that, since falling under Ferromex ownership, have only received some cosmetic refurbishment. Unfortunately, Ferromex doesn't really care too much about this service. I actually also rode the Chepe some months ago and was also extremely disappointed in many things like scratched windows on coaches and lackluster service from staff. That being said, as someone who has also traveled extensively on Amtrak (the US passenger train provider) I can say the Chepe is 1000% better quality than most any Amtrak train (for context). My recommendation to anyone reading this is if you are thinking of making the trip on the Chepe, go for it but splurge for first class. The two things that really make the train worthwhile and unique are the open terrace observation car (so you can really see and feel the sierra as it passes by) and the dome restaurant car (one of only a few of its kind left in the world). Oh, and yes, I also really wish that instead of the generic music they play, the conductors could occasionally point out historical/natural landmarks. The area that the train passes is full of places of historical significance, but if you don't know about them beforehand, you will totally miss them.

Excellent comment and suggestions - thank you. The Rocky Mountaineer has domed cars and is a luxury trip in British Columbia Canada - but you will have to sell a kidney to pay the fare - entry level is $4,000 Canadian (includes hotels along the way).
@davidostrowski6792 жыл бұрын
I couldn't put it better myself. Everything I absolutely agree with. Some people have said I was comparing the Chepe with trains in Europe. I didn't even mention Europe and that wasn't even in my mind considering I haven't travelled extensively in Europe by train (only UK, Poland, Italy I think). And they were even worse than the Chepe (especially UK - they are well-known for being outdated and horrendous). I get what you say about Ferromex, of course I've seen many freight trains and absolutely I would never associate them with passenger transport. As I said, I cannot fault the bus system in Mexico. It's world class and probably the best I've experienced. Again re the UK, a National Express bus or Megabus (you can tell by the name, it's suicide inducing) are some of the worst I've ever had the displeasure of using. One bus driver from Bristol to London even once had a visible bottle of vodka in his cab! ARGH. So people can trust me when I say I'm not proud of European transport!
@rutaloot2 жыл бұрын
No problem! Yeah if you are interested I definitely recommend the trip and would highly recommend stopping in the towns along the way to really enjoy the sierra. My personal favorite stops were Creel, Cerocahui, and El Fuerte.
@rutaloot2 жыл бұрын
We Mexicans love to think of Europe and the US as some magical fairytale location where nothing could ever be wrong. I’m sure that’s where some of those comments are coming from, I would just ignore them! If you are interested it is quite a fascinating and albeit kind of sad rabbit hole to go down to explore the simultaneous rise of the bus system that you see today and the collapse of the rail network. As with so many other things in Mexico the story is full of greedy businessmen and corrupt politicians.

Lessons learned: make sure you have at least 10 days to enjoy the trip; don't go directly to Los Mochis and the seats won't feel as stiff; get off at each stop.and take day trips to enjoy the local culture; don't complain about food being cheaper than what it costs at home.

We got a long, LONG way to go with trains in Mexico. Ever since the nationalization of the rail system way back in the middle of the 20th century, it's been in a steady decline. To the point where something like El Chepe can be considered fancy. Honestly, I've been on buses nicer than that. And since you are a European, you have personally gotten to know the continent's far superior trains. As for the views though, El Chepe, in my opinion, still reigns supreme. Especially if there is snowfall. Going from semi-arid Los Mochis to gorgeous canyons dressed in white was a highlight for me.
@davidostrowski6792 жыл бұрын
Snow would have been insane I'm certain! Re Europe mainland I'm not so familiar with except Poland and Italy, but I would compare the Chepe (except the nice bar carriage) to an average class outdated UK train in terms of comfort and cleanliness. UK trains are generally terrible. Mexico buses are FAR superior to UK and rest of Europe. Colombia and Brazil excellent too.

Hahaha, it is good thing you didn't do what I did and take the Chepe Regional. That Chepe Express looks like a luxury liner compared to the Regional. I am surprised you took the express over the cheaper regional, but it is probably for the best because I am not sure you would like the regional. The Regional looks like it was from the revolutionary days, the only exception being it is pulled by a diesel engine instead of a steam engine. There is no comfy couch on the Regional, no safety checks either, if you want to ride on the outside of the train no one is going to say anything, and you can bring your own food of you want. I was OK with it though, I actually thought it was a fun experience. That said I do prefer the busses over the train in Mexico.

Anyway, thank you for, well, being taken for a ride - and offering this hugely cautionary tale. The biggest shock was that the views were limited and through dirty windows. And there is no way, at 6'3", I could sit in those foursome seats. It would be 9 hours on a bar stool or dusty sofa for me. I had this fantasy that I would be sitting comfortably with a cocktail in my hand gazing out at endless canyon vistas. I still want to see the canyon some day - but it will definitely require a different mode of transport and overnights in the canyon to hike and explore.

We went to Copper Canyon in a rented minivan, probably a better experience than you had. I remember also going Los Mochis but I can't recall whether I went on the train or not. I don't remember the train being that bad but it was a long time ago (as I commented on the other video)
@jackmui2195 Жыл бұрын
We took the Chepe train for tourists in January 2023. It was a big disappointment. The train windows were dirty. Every picture had dirt shown through the window. When we complained to the train attendant. She said that the windows were washed the day we boarded the train. Either she lied to us or if the windows were washed, the cleaner must have did a terrible job. Throughout the 9.5 hour journey from Creel to Los Mochis, we were not allowed to leave the train at Davidsario as mentioned in the description that there was a 20 minute stop for passengers to get off the train to take some pictures of the Copper Canyon. We spent about US$130 for the tourist economy class ticket per person. It is very expensive. Consider the value received, it is very poor. I strongly not recommend taking this train.

Thanks for your feedback, Jack. Unfortunately, it sounds like you had a pretty much identical experience to me. As per this video, I was beyond disappointed, especially regarding the dirty windows, attitudes of some of the employees, and the diabolical food. I forgot to mention in the video that the family on the table next to me with the same burger and fries as me actually complained and sent the food back but to be honest I was so hungry I didn't care. Plus being fake polite British we don't do that lol. I hate to bash an experience like this as I don't know the root cause of the issues but going by online reviews it seems like our poor experiences weren't isolated incidents. Hopefully some improvements can be made!
@jackmui2195 Жыл бұрын
The root cause of the problems is top management, starting with the Chief Executive Officer. There is no accountability and no survey and feedback from the customers who took the Chepe train. The Chief Executive Officer of the Chepe train should be replaced with a more competent leader. This person needs to make improvements, not ignoring customers’ complaints and business as usual.

And I thought that Amtrak in the USA was bad. The only good thing I see is experiencing a vintage train and it's pitfalls.

yeah I love the vintage aspect, but being confined to your seat for 9 hours looking out a dirty window really put a dampener on things!

@@davidostrowski679 There's one in Arizona that goes from Williams to the Grand Canyon. It's very touristy but enjoyable and it's only about an hour long. Vintage cartridges with singing cowboys. The train even stops to get robbed by horse riding outlaws. But after it's just like us in the USA to try everything into a tourist attraction.

I wouldn't totally right it off, I've seen some videos of first class and it seems ok, but as always I don't know how genuine those videos are. Winter would probably also be better because of snow. It seems like it's something older Mexicans would enjoy or American pensioners. Definitely not for me, give me a sketchy street in Juarez any day lol

I basically couldn't justify First class prices. And don't tell me what to do!! My family and I had plans to ride the Chepe this year. After your video, I think we will hold that ride and go somewhere else. It's a pity that the rail owners don't do anything to improve the experience charging like a top transportation train that in reality seems to be overpriced and a trap for domestic and international tourism. Hopefully, authorities see your video to realize they need to improve the experience before it becomes a crappy transportation experience.

Hey Luis I really don't want to be responsible for discouraging people to go on the Chepe (I feel guilty!). I would definitely watch some videos of first class and if possible, do that. There does seem to be absolute separation between classes which I thought was good actually, but as a result this is why I couldn't even get any shots of the tourist class. Many people have told me the regional train gives a much better experience!

HAY DAVID, WOW... SORRY AGAIN FOR YOUR UNSATISFACTORY EXPERIENCE... YES, UNFORTUNATELY, WATER WAS AT A PREMIUM BECAUSE OF EASTER WEEK AND ALSO BECAUSE THE BAD FOLKS CUT THE WATER LINE FROM BOCOYNA TO CREEL, LOVELY... AND THE TRAIN, WELL, IT'S MENT FOR TRAVEL. AND THE MAJORITY OF ITS OCCUPENTS ARE POOR. THERE ARE AROUND 4 OR 5 POINTS OF INTEREST ALONG THE WAY THAT ARE MENT TO VISIT FOR A DAY OR SO. UNTIL YOU HOP ON TO THE NEXT DESTENATION FOR ANOTHER DAY OR SO. YOU DID'NT REELY GIVE IT A GOOD SHOT I DON'T THINK. ALSO YOU WENT AT THE WRONG TIME OF THE YEAR. SORRY FOR YOUR LESS THAN SATISFACTORY EXPERANCE. I SPENT 12 DAYS IN CREEL AND LOVED EVERY MINUTE. EVEN WITH ALL THE WIND, DUST, AND LACK OF WATER, SURE BEETS THE CLAMMER AND STRESS OF WORK AND THE CITY. WITH ALL THAT PLUS, THE HEAT OF PHOENIX. CREEL AND ALL THE SAROUNDINGS IS WHERE I WANT TO SPEND MY FINAL DAYS AGAIN, GIVE IT ANOTHER GO, OLE BOY... I'D LOVE TO SHOW YOU AROUND... KEEP PUSHIN' ON... PEACE...✌

It's not a case of giving it a shot. As I explained in the video I had work the next day. As a self employed teacher with mainly Russian students who cannot pay for lessons due to sanctions I cannot afford to take time off to spend 12 days in Creel. If I was on vacation it would be a different matter. I made it very clear in both this video and the last one that I was purposely going directly to Mochis and mentioned twice that it would be better to stop off. I usually come to Mexico at this time of the year as I prefer to spend winter in Europe. I can't time travel or control seasons! Lol. The time of year or stopping off wouldn't have made any difference to the poor service and disgusting food. If most of the occupants are poor, how can they afford 3000 pesos for a train ticket?
