Although Rich Little in this 1978 videotaped appearance by Cher on Johnny Carson's, "The Tonight Show" did talk about himself a little too much, it is understandable in that as an inexperienced talk show host/interviewer he understandably tried to make his interview of Cher like a conversation in which two people talk about their similar experiences in the entertainment business.

This was interesting, I've never seen it before. I don't know if it's me, or a difference in interview styles between what I watch now and how they interviewed people back then, but I recently noticed when I watch old interviews from the 80's etc, the questions/interviewer just seems "off" and a little weird, like the interviewer is uncomfortable the whole time & not prepared. I noticed in this interview that half the time he was talking about himself & his experiences and not focusing on the interview being about her; was he always like that in interviews or just star struck?
@Alvin4NY10 жыл бұрын
Rich was a little conservative here, going after Barry Gibb (in a stuttering, uncomfortable way)as not being 'normal'- for singing in the falsetto style that sold 100 million records. You can imagine what he was thinking of the tabloid queen (at that time) Cher, when she first walked out before her honest-down-to-earth personality, finally put him at ease. (Cher also had a tiff with Johnny Carson a few years before this, and only went on The Tonight Show when Johnny wasn't hosting....maybe Rich was hip to that, and was expecting a more confrontational Cher.)

Imagine doing your own tv special twice and putting out two albums over the course of three years and the interviewer states you haven’t been doing anything. By today’s standards, doing two tv specials and dropping two albums over three years would be considered a hard working entertainer. This guy doing the interview is a real jerk.

I don't think this is exactly why Carson never interviewed Cher on his show, but I think this is interesting. "On election night in 1968, Son [Sonny Bono] and I were invited to Jack Benny’s house. A bunch of people were sitting around the television as Nixon made his acceptance speech. Johnny Carson, who was a big Nixon fan I guess, was there … But Lucy [Ball] thought that Nixon’s speech was boring, and she started making these great, rude jokes and noises while he was speaking. You could tell that Johnny Carson wasn’t happy - actually, he was pissed off - but he wasn’t going to say anything to her, right? I didn’t like Nixon, either, and I couldn’t stop laughing, especially because I knew I wasn’t supposed to." (Beverly Hills, Calif., 1968) -Cher
