Sad thing is Jessica, they were told all would be okay and they would be back in a few days. To live in such a regime as they did then was something us in the west find hard to understand and to be brought up in such a regime meant you thought nothing of listening to the orders or you would end up in the Gulag. Some regimes such as Albania to even criticise the govt. for no bread in the shops could land you in prison for 10 - 15yrs. It is a mindset so different from today....

Didn't you notice that there is less mold or sometimes not any mold at all in the decaying buildings. All the papers still look kinda fresh. This is due to the bacteria that is not able to survive and grow in these high radiation levels. You also can notice that the wood is not decaying as normal for the same reason.

If anyone is interested, according to the book of vice chief engineer Anatoly Dyatlov "Chernobyl. How it happened" there was a nuclear explosion in Chernobyl. Because of positive void coefficient of reactivity, positive power coefficient of reactivity, so-called tip effect of control rods and very slow computing of operating margin of reactivity reactor power started to grow exponentially when the staff pressed the "AZ-5" button (it must just stop the reactor and there were no warnings before it was pressed, everything seemed OK) - there were too much prompt neutrons, so reactor acted like a typical nuclear bomb releasing insane amount of power instantly. According to Konstantin Checherov and a group of Kurchatovsky institute research there is no nuclear fuel left in reactor pit (at all!). And they also state that explostion were nuclear blowing out 90% of fuel into the atmosphere at levels of 1-15km. They visited almost all power plant rooms personally with cameras and found about 10% of nuclear fuel in rooms under the reactor. Konstantin Checherov got documented dose of 22 Sievert (6 considered lethal). USSR government told that 95% of fuel is left inside the reactor so sarcophagus must be built. That's not true and all the 600000 liquidators lost their health and lives uselessly. Just like Three Mile Island, Chernobyl power plant should be left untouched for years. There was no fuel and nothing to protect the environment from. Fuel was blown by winds all around northern hemisphere.
