No disrespect intended to those who have suffered or died as a result of the disaster. Thank you for the wonderful show Craig Mazin, Johan Renck, and HBO. I am aware that characters are represented differently in the show and am not attacking the real people.
I do not own any clips from this video, it has been edited under fair use for purpose of making a parody of the way the soviet union reacted to the incident as portrayed in episode 1 & 5.

That's a real thing, too. it wasn't the Cherenkov effect, though, but ionization. Gamma radiation with enough energy can cause the atoms in air to separate, which gives off the extra energy as a photon. this happens all the time, but you can't see it unless there is a massive amount of radiation. the Cherenkov effect is.... similar, but not the same. you see it as a blue glow in the water when a reactor achieves criticality.

for those wondering, the 15000r/h estimate of the area directly above reactor 4 is equal to 150 Sieverts, 1Sv leads to acute radiation sickness, 5 is usually where 50% of people die within 2 months, and 10 is lethal, dead within days to a week or two depending on treatment. 150 is lethal within in minutes, if that. for context 3.6r/h is equivalent to less than a chest x-ray. 200r/h is equivalent to annual background radiation. (iirc, conversions may not be accurate)

There were a lot more people in the plant and control room doing the test, and Dyatlov was more of a "observer" than running the place. He also walked around the whole outside after the explosion and knew what had happened within minutes of the thing happening. The Chernobyl Guy has a youtube channel that has a lot of real history on it.

@@JohnBanana I haven't seen the show. At age 71 I clearly remember Chernobyl in the news; later we were told they performed an unsafe unauthorized experiment... so these clips are a revelation. My Dido (grandfather) came from Ukraine, 30 miles from its Romania-Moldova border corner, to Canada around the time of the Russian revolution. He lived to 95. So any news about Ukraine has always been a gut punch: unknown second cousins etc. could be involved in any incident, and I & family would never know. But *OMG!* "Well?"
