The guy with the birthmark on his head is Mikhail Gorbachev. Im not sure what his title was during the events of Chernobyl but he went on to be the last leader of the Soviet Union . Hes still currently alive at 88.

He was the country's head of state from 1988 until 1991, serving as Chairman of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet from 1988 to 1989, Chairman of the Supreme Soviet from 1989 to 1990, and President of the Soviet Union from 1990 to 1991.

@@MrTech226 Gorbachev was never Premier/Prime Minister/Chairman of the Council of Ministers/Head of Government. That was Nikolai Ryzhkov. Gorbachev was head of the Party and head of state.

4:57 This bit where Legasov is arguing about the extent of the evacuation zone and how stupid the perimeter seems might only play a tiny part in the show but it was a very pertinent point because in reality the soviets really did just slap a big "no go" circle on a map with Chernobyl at the middle when in reality the contaminated area was nothing like a circle. Because of wind and weather and humidity the levels of contamination in certain places could vary wildly - one kilometre south of the nuclear plant might have almost no contamination while 400 kilometres north west in the Baltic states of Estonia and Latvia might have catastrophic radiation readings. The exclusion zone being a 30km wide circle with Chernobyl right in the centre was an idiotic decision made by a bureaucrat so I was happy to see Legasov bring it up in that moment.

Okay, you need to know something. The Minister of Coal Shadov was an aged guy, himself a miner and very much loved by the mining community. The miners weren't forced to go at gun point but were told the task required of them and the risks they would face. Pointing guns at workers is unimaginable in a "Worker's State" like USSR. They were flown to Chernobyl not trucked or bused. All the miners were given medical treatment, enhanced pensions and other benefits even after the Soviet Union collapsed (by Russia). Most of them lived long lives. Thousands of people volunteered for the cleanup that followed. That part of the show is definitely propaganda aimed at creating more hatred is disgust for the Soviet Union. It is HBO remember. I am not Russian or a socialist.

It was not known (at least not in the Soviet Union at the time) that it would not be a problem for her to touch, even hug, her husband once his clothes were changed and he was washed off. Radiation damage is not contagious. So there was no reason to keep them apart. But the program shows what they thought was right at the time.

Yeah because of his extreme exposure to the radiation, in fact his buddy Misha who picked up a block of graphite, had his hand in blisters within a minute. 15,000 Roentgens per hour would have killed them in less then a week. The "Elephants Foot" which was a combination of melted rods, concrete, and graphite was giving off 33,000 Roentgens per minute enough to kill a person in 5 minutes standing 3 feet away.
