You know what they say, If you can't talk about it then you still have a problem with it. Talking about it helps other people as well to know that someone else has been threw that same experience too. It helps them feel less lonely and like someone actually understands what their going threw because they've also live it and aren't scared to talk about it. I think that you do come out the other side a different person and some people never come out the other side. I think it makes you stronger once you realized that's not what you want and no way to live anymore. I also think its a trap that many people never escape. Its good to show people that I did it and you can too. I wish we would do more to combat drugs at the source. why don't we spend some of that 198billion dollars of tax money this next 4 years to partner with our brothers and sisters in Mexico to take down some of this stuff. I lost a lot of friend to drugs some living some dead for real as well as family.

I love this show. My ex-husband was not in the military, but he had a horrible life, and he died from opioid addiction in prison. He never knew his kids. All he had were his demons. I was raised by Military officers and Vietnam Vets, Korean and WWII Vets, and WWI. When we were growing up and on base, our dad would tell us to sit down, be quiet, and listen so we might learn something. And I did learn a lot listening to these guys talking. They barely noticed us, and when they did, they would always apologize because we were little girls. I remember telling them they have nothing to apologize for. The WWI Veteran said to the other men, "I signed that piece of paper, and I went voluntarily, so I have nothing to complain about. I did this to myself." And I never forgot that. Every one of us has our demons to deal with in this life. It doesn't matter how we got them, whether our actions brought them upon us or someone in our family brought them upon us. None of that matters. What matters is learning through Jesus and being accountable for ourselves. With Jesus, we can face all demons. Demons are everywhere, always in the mind, in suits, in the churches, on the stage, in politics, in war, and at home. They are everywhere. Always.

Amen! I've noticed a lot of people believe demons are only a figurative manner of speech rather than actual, destructive beings. Or worse yet, they fall for their tricks, not understanding that demons require a payment of sorts. To the trolls who want to scoff while discussing 'sky daddy' or 'fairy tales', I've heard it all, so skip on by what I'm sure would be an intellectually lazy retort. 😏

Amen. Demons are everywhere, but they are the losers. They have lost the war when Christ fulfilled his promises (and more to be fulfilled). Those with Christ are protected, those not with Christ have a chance to be apart of the family of God. Just have faith and trust Christ. Otherwise, the demons will control your life and your flesh will reign. Keep sharing your testimony. It is impactful and you know a lot that can help others!

Danny Dietz's father reading off the autopsy out loud was deep. I've witnessed trauma and casualties over GWOT, but never thought about how traumatic that event is for a mother or father to read out loud. I was a medic and I've always separated myself from a situation and avoided internalizing a a casualty. I would assume other medic/corpsman felt the same way. I don't want to know about their history, families, look at photos, or know their "why" after the event. I just focus on training that becomes muscle memory from repitition in training. When it's someone you know like a close friend or family member, it's impossible to avoid it. Being a father now, my little ones are growing fast, but I still refer to them as my babies. I was saying I had a newborn at home and my girl was almost three lol. They make me wish that time would slow down. I'm sure the gold star parents felt the same way and now their lives are changed forever.

I am a Navy veteran, and thank you so much for having Mr Berg on your show. We have so many veterans still struggling after their traumatic experiences. Every generation of warriors along with the combat doctors and nurses come home with it. My grandfather's generation it was called shell shock. He was told be a man suck it up. It's what my father struggled with after Korea and early days of Vietnam. When my father was older, divorced, basically destroyed emotionally, he moved in with me. So many nights I was awakened by his yelling in screaming in his sleep. The first time I tried to wake him up when this happened he had his hand around my neck and I thought he was going to kill me. He was still fighting the war.

I just responded to your short on this subject. OxyContin was originally only prescribed for end of life pain. I had no issue at that point, and I was working in the industry. Serious concerns arose for me when the product was moved into the back pain side of the industry. I was there in that initial phase, and I removed myself promptly without regret. There is no justification in my heart or mind for this kind of abuse of authority.

Before i listen, i want to say I've read lone survivor, and watched the movie. Kudos to this director. I can say i wish i wouldn't have done any digging and found out Marcus's story was a lie. The book really helped me through some dark times in my life. The "don't ever give up" attitude was what i needed to read about,so im grateful for one breath and really disappointed on the next.

Lone Survivor is 10% accurate at best. Marcus has already admitted he was a coward and dropped his weapon while his teammates were calling out to him for help. He ran off while his teammates were still being killed. He also stated he had absolutely nothing to do with writing the book. It was written and completed before he even knew about it. I don't know how Marcus sat in that chair across from Shawn and lied his ass off. And then Shawn, not coming out and rebuking the lies. The truth has been out for years!
@Giggles_11414 сағат бұрын
I agree but I don’t think Marcus has been on the show. As some others have said. A lot of stuff Shawn is bringing on is great. But it does suck that it does seem that we all really know things didn’t go down the way the book was told and will we ever hear it brought to light.

I was in sof for 15 years and i came in after this thought it was true. The guys told me it was all bullshit and he ran even tho he was a seal I could belive he left his brother's. After getting experience down range I knew for a million percent it was bullshit. My experience was way different we were ambushed multiple times and we were just so well prepared. When everything went wrong we were still just better prepared and had plans for every scenario that you could dream of. Let me make this clear this was my experience but like I said I just don't get how any tier 2 unit even the navy not know the sop on a soft contact.

Sincere question from ignorance. How did a different story from Marcus' come out when no one else lived to tell a different story? Did he share a different story with someone once and that finally got out?

Once again, awesome episode. Shawn you're doing extremely important work my brother. Story that refuse to be buried. Peter Bergs film that I love to this day is an old one that he acted in called Aspen Extreme. Skiing movie from late 80's or early 90s when I was a teenager. Long Survivor is one of my all time favorites

One of my episodes so far! I have been a Peter Berg fan since his early acting days in Alias and Friday Night Lights. Shawn, I haven’t heard you talking this much in an interview yet. Berg is an amazing interviewer too. I haven’t watched Painkiller yet, but it’s on my list. I’m sure it’s going to be amazing. The opioid crisis affected me in 2 ways. My brother was addicted to pain pills after botched back surgery, and I have drug addicts and alcoholics on both sides of my family. I made the conscious decision to not use drugs or drink except on special occasions. But, as a police officer, I saw the destruction opioids did to so many people, and their families. For a few years, I went to at least 1 fatal overdose, accidental or intentional, a week. My ex was a hugely talented musician who worked for many years for a very famous singer-songwriter, as a bass player. He was fired because of cocaine and alcohol. He got sober, and had been for 8 yrs when we married. He was diagnosed with shingles, and some serious dental issues. His first prescription for pain was a fucking morphine patch! It only got worse after that. I stuck it out for 3 yrs. He never got clean again, and died of a heart attack at 51.

I’ve always appreciated the honesty and the willingness to explore other types of subjects or to take things to another level. Your content is the Michelin grade of podcasts. Um - heck man, geeze every guest you have takes me higher and my expectation for podcast content higher. I felt like you became the interviewee here (out of it…) and you came through. Raw…. Shawn, thank you! Every guest and every interview is engaging on a deep level. The range of emotions while listening to the stories is intense. My grandfather was a Marine in WWI, my dad a Marine in WW2, and my husband on a carrier ship during Vietnam. I am retired from the fire service. In my humble thoughts for all Marines, Seals, Rangers, and special military forces, after that service are always former, or former active, never x. There are x husbands, x wives, x girlfriends, etc. Never x for the baddest of the bad! I am proud to be a small part of this awesome community that my membership allows!

Thank you for sharing all of it and giving insight into the experience and process. I would love such an experience but I’m well past the age for being able to make the trip and or experience. That was what I was looking for back in the day when we were all doing all kinds of stuff and never really had any ahaaah experiences. Never really had a bad experience either. Always knew my limits.

This anti opioid push really frustrates me because the "opioid epidemic" narrative backfired in several ways. The first is people who suffer from chronic pain that there is no fix or surgery for (Anklyosing Spondylitis) and all sorts of other issues can't even get the proper dosing of meds because of the regulation and scared doctors as a result of this push. Then you have people that go and try to get it off the street because of this over regulation and end up overdosing and dying from fentanyl. So, how does the push to regulate it even more help?
