I’m beginning to like these people :) Also it wasn’t only the Swedish.. We used to be a loosely united pack of farmers and murderers from all Scandinavian nations back in the day. The toast is a Viking thing however and to this day you’ll be treated suspiciously if you don’t participate in it or if you toast someone with a non alcoholic drink. My ancestors got plenty things wrong but the toast (skål) they absolutely understood and perfected to a political way of pressuring opponents. EDIT: RIP chef Bourdain.. He made a ruckus while he was here and that’s a great way of remembering someone.

I don't think it's too upsetting. Yes this is a lonely little radioactive town in the middle of nowhere, but these old folk might have more friendship and love between them than entire scores of people who live in big modern cities. I've been living in cities for my whole life, and the sadness which can be found in such big places can often be immeasurable. My conclusion is that everything can be upsetting. Some people might see this video and see an isolated city of neglected elders. Others might find great entertainment and joy from it; perhaps their lives, wherever they are, are more lonely and solemn than the lives of these radioactive belarussians. It's a matter of perspective of course, like all things. But I think that these villagers might have some bond millions of modern cityfolk (or maybe not even cityfolk) would only dream for.

@@alexl9799 it is a shame that they didn't go with a russian cast but it is still good, give it a try, watch the first episode, if after the first 30 minutes you're not hooked and the language still bothers you then stop. In a podcast they mentioned that they considered having russian accents but as far as I remember they didn't mention anything about a russian cast. I can understand why they went this way though, not many people are used to watching movies/tv shows with subtitles, so they would've lost a lot of audience, and considering that the show is pretty well made they would've lost money by making it with a russian cast + subtitles. I am romanian and grew up there so I'm used to watching movies with subtitles, now I live in Italy and everything is dubbed, the main argument against subtitles here is that they can't read and focus on the movie at the same time.

It's really about appealing to a wider audience. I was one of many Argentine dissidents doomed, this had the UK decided to give up rather than fighting. I am from the Argentine provinces, where before 1982 Fascism was almost unheard of. The folks in the Argentine provinces where like the folks in the Belarusian village in this video, simple, straightforward, and willing to toast, nice people. I am a big fan of yours, you understand other cultures so well that it is so moving.

Love the tribute to Anthony Bourdain at the end. Bald and Bankrupt is someone who does travel journalism in the same spirit as Anthony did, with respect, humor and off the beaten path.
