It belongs to anyone who wants to speak it. Autosomal DNA is proving our history is wrong. We can argue that only rez Indians are Indians but you'll have to argue with science. And this idea that you have to act like an Indian to be an Indian is not applied to any other group. Just remember that we are Indian because a white person said our ancestors were Indians. Lol. So remember to be humble because we need all the support we can get and if others are Cherokee let's accept them
@uwohiyuhi-achoogi456 Жыл бұрын
@@Melungeonpeople I can be indian without the culture now, but historically if we accepted you it's because you were a part of the community and pulled your weight and wanted to know and we're respectful of our traditions . But saying that ,if you have the blood and not the culture ur assimilated which alot are . Just can't fathom calling myself indian and not wanting to be around the culture, I'm a mix blood but my bloodline goes passed the trail of tear I still have my clan , so even though I'm fair skinned I'm apart of my tribe in the oldest way but blood didn't make me this way family ties and history does . But if i see a non Cherokee speaking I would think that's kool , sry for rambling

I am part Choctaw and 1/4 Cochimí, unfortunately there is no culture or language left within the Cochimí Nation, because of colonization from the Spanish, so I am learning basic conversation in Cherokee as well as learning Choctaw as a second language. Great video!!

Thank you so much for this video and live stream. I know this was done a few years ago but obviously, it continues to help people such as myself. My family and I live far away from most speakers, however, my sister and I plan to learn the best we can and also pass it on to our niece and children when we have them. Keep working hard at learning! People have saved and revived languages in the past, we can do it too!

Thanks for this presentation... you really don't realize how close we are to losing it completely. We've lost enough as a people...we need to keep it going. I am dedicated to the Cherokee life now and then. I'm 7/16 and not enrolled, but it doesn't make me less of a advocate for preserving our heritage.

Program starts at 8:55. 32:59 But, if you learn and use the syllabary from the start, the learner doesn't have to use English as a crutch in the learning process. Sequoyah invented the syllabary as a method to learn to read the language. Ellen Cushman's The Cherokee Syllabary: Writing the People's Perseverance (2011/2013 paperback) makes it perfectly clear that he wanted the Cherokee syllabary to be free of the taint of English. Unfortunately, when it was converted into type and print, that principle wasn't honored.

Wado - osda I'm enrolled in Ed Fields' FREE online live dideloquasdi (which she mentions - level tali) .... I just returned from a weekend workshop with tali teachers who came out to the nation for an outreach class!! Between 25 & 30 of us attended in Oregon - there's a workshop in Seattle at the end of the month, and Chief Hoskins is coming out in early August. These outreach classes are also FREE! Several of us who met in the class plan to continue connect virtually and continue practicing. My ancestors came out to Oregon in the late 1800s, so I didn't grow up with any exposure = and am just beginning the journey!! I love the phrase from Ed's parents - yu-na-du-li-ha ya-na-de-lo-qua - 'if they want to, they will learn!' (from Ed Fields and Mary Rae's book, journeying into Cherokee.' donadagohvinina

Wow. Wish I found this lady years ago. So much shame in the past about not speaking cherokee properly. Now I am old and it is even harder. Plus I live far from my tribe so no one to speak cherokee with. And well I am enrolled but am light skinned, so even more shame about not looking indian enough, so how dare I aspire to speak my own language! My great grandpa was an official interpreter for the Cherokee Nation and I feel his spirit is trying to encourage me to learn. He was fluent in both Cherokee and English. Just like she said here one doesn't take away from the other. The Cherokee language is magical. I learned prayers and songs in Cherokee in my youth. They are deeply powerful and other people do get uncomfortable sometimes when they hear them. This is a good thing imo.

Need to research the Cymru (Welsh) language revitalization. Now that it is on Duolingo, and other website learning groups, about 20% of the new learners are in the US and many have no Welsh blood. They are just interested in reviving a language the English nearly obliterated through “boarding schools”. Sound familiar.

It seemed to me that the intent was to insult, rather than teach. None the less, after changing my sources my studies continued. I am still trying to learn the language, having someone to converse with would be nice.
